RESCUE
I’m working again, but I wasn’t for a while. The problem is no one told my bills I
was out of work, so I was spending every cheque digging my way out of the hole.
YM
After months of treading water, I called LCTaylor. They have over thirty years of
experience dealing with situations just like mine. Together, we came up with a plan
that let me pay off my debts and live life.

Summer/Fall 2015
Message from the Chair
By Merelyn Hunkin, DW Chairman
The summer show season is ending, and it’s time to reflect on both our progress with our equine partners
and the activities of our organization.
As riders, we can review the goals we made for ourselves and our horses. Often, we set goals which are too
singular and far-reaching, not thinking of the smaller achievements which we reach along the way. I find
that focusing on the small improvements and skills which we achieve, can be most rewarding. Hopefully ,
these new skills will also translate into competition achievements for those who show, but since dressage is
such a long term process the gradual improvements should also be very fulfilling.
As Dressage Winnipeg members, we can review the activities provided by our board for its membership.
DW not only held four shows in 2015, we held educational activities such as the Give It A Go clinic and
classroom activities such as the first aid and rider exercise sessions. Also, we assisted with the MEC show
and several schooling shows. The board also organizes and implements the scholarship program , the
Awards Banquet, the Annual General Meeting, a quarterly newsletter, a website, and does extensive
fundraising through our sponsorship program. DW board members, assisted by some of the membership,
work extensively to complete the aforesaid programs and activities.
As DW members and participants in these activities, you might also see ways that we could improve the
delivery of these programs, or you might like to help the board to maintain the current programs. We were
really stretched for volunteers this year. Some volunteer jobs were dropped or doubled while we held our
shows. If you did not volunteer this year, please be aware of the burden this can cause for our board. For
those who did volunteer, we applaud your support! We will also have several positions open on our board for
2016. It is imperative that we have a complete board to organize DW’s shows and other programs. It would
also be great to see some new board members to energize our organization and add some fresh ideas.
So, with the end of the year in sight, let your reflections of 2015 inspire your training and goals for 2016,
but also please consider the extensive work required to operate our club and find ways to assist our board
or participate as a board member in 2016.

Summer/Fall 2015
Message from the Show Chair
By Sue Matthews, DW Show Chair
The competition season is finally over! For the most part Mother Nature co-operated and we had reasonable
weather for most of the summer, now if only we could get rid of the bugs!
I would like to thank our membership for their support this season. We have certain people who always
support us, but it was great to see some people returning that had not shown in a while and even better to
see new people coming out to support us for the first time.
This was my first competition season as show chair so throughout the season I have become aware of some
things that I think need to be changed for next year. I will be working on making these changes over the
winter months ahead. If any of you have any ideas how to improve our competitions or something you would
like to see us doing that we are not doing please feel free to email me at [email protected]
One of our biggest problems this season was volunteers for the competitions. Without volunteers it’s
difficult for us to run our competitions smoothly. The board members work really hard to try and arrange 4
competitions each summer but without the support of volunteers it is becoming increasingly more difficult.
We will be asking you to complete a survey at the awards banquet for feedback on this issue.
Hopefully we will winter well and I am looking forward to seeing you all in the Competition ring next year.

Summer/Fall 2015
International Society for Equestrian
International Society for Equitation
Conference in Canada
Science Conference
in Science
Canada
By Marilee Moss
By Marilee Moss
I had the pleasure of attending the 2015 International Society for Equitation Science (ISES) Conference held in
Vancouver, BC this August. This was the first time Canada played host to this international body and proved a fantastic
conference. The theme was “Ethical Equitation for all Equestrian Disciplines: Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges”. It
was filled with thought provoking academic presentations, poster presentations, as well as, a practical day.
You may be wondering what is Equitation Science? ISES was founded in 2007 by a group of scientists, psychologists,
veterinarians, and animal behaviourists united in their devotion to competitive equestrian sport and their collective
desire to promote equine well-being. Equitation Science uses an evidence-based, scientific approach to explain horse
training and to ensure that techniques are effective and do not compromise horse welfare.
Having attended a previous conference held at Michigan State University in 2007, I was excited to see the evolving
research in different areas of equine welfare. Some presentations that stood out in my mind were;
 Revisiting the Equitation Science Training Principles. Andrew McLean & Paul McGreevy
There are 10 principles; I highly recommend all equestrians look at these in detail on the website:
http://www.equitationscience.com/learning-theory-in-equitation
 Subjective scoring of rideability by professional riders – is it linked to
rein tension and occurrence of conflict behaviour? Janne Winther
Christensen et al
 The understanding of equine learning theory by equine Veterinarians.
Gemma Pearson et al
 When I look into your eyes... What eye wrinkles in horses tell us
about their emotional state. Sara Hintze et al
The proceedings from the conference are posted here for those interested in more detail:
http://www.equitationscience.com/documents/Conferences/2015/ISES_Conference_Proceedings_2015.pdf
The practical day was held at the beautiful Southlands Equestrian Park. It stirred fond
memories from my competitive days there! The four disciplines presented were;
dressage, jumping, western and para dressage. All sessions put learning theory into
practice, including the correct use of positive and negative reinforcement and
classical conditioning. On occasion, negative reinforcement can be misunderstood to
be a negative way of training, when in actual fact it is a scientific term meaning the
removal of pressure when the correct response occurs.
One of the presenters, New Zealand Grand Prix dressage rider Jody Hartstone,
Figure 1 Practical Day Presenters
impressed the crowd with her demonstration in foundation training. She has an
amazing ability to present a large amount of vital information in a condensed amount of
time. I was lucky enough to have met and trained with Jody during my time spent in NZ
from 2006 to 2012 and continue our friendship and knowledge sharing to this day.
ISES conferences are held annually all around the world, the next being France 2016.

2015 GIVE IT A GO Debrief
Dressage Winnipeg held its Third Annual Give It A Go Clinic
on July 25 and 26th at the Manitoba Horse Council facility
in Birds Hill Park.
A total of 28 sessions were purchased by Dressage
enthusiasts and those new to the sport. 18 of those were
taken by non-DW members. Tests were ridden at levels
from Walk Trot to Level 3. There were also rides of our
newer sister sport - Western Dressage.
The feedback from participants and clinicians was very
positive in spite of the heat we experience in our Manitoba
summers. Both clinicians - Doreen Horsey (senior EC judge)
and Lynne Poole (basic EC judge) did an outstanding job showing participant improvement in every case. A slight but positive change was made to the format this year.
After each participant rode their test, their coach or friend was invited into the ring to better hear the clinician’s
comments. This person was also able to take notes, or even videotaped the lesson so that the points worked on
could be reviewed later – and often as the rider felt was helpful, thereby increasing the learning experience.
Most sessions consisted of the participating rider - navigating a Dressage test which was marked by either
Lynne or Doreen. Then during the rest of the session, the judge worked with the rider to identify areas which
would result in them giving a better performance with an eye towards attaining higher scores.
Dressage Winnipeg thanks Dressage Canada for their financial assistance in offering this much needed education
opportunity to local riders. Also – a big thank you for MHC for securing a grant for the use of the site and rings.
I personally wish to thank Merelyn Hunkin for taking on the overnight security task, Christine Stevens for
driving the clinicians and supplying refreshments, Jodi Baxter for being our (happily not needed) medic,
scribes Linda Delaney, Sandra Hobday, Colleen McCoy, and Johanna Roger, , and Sue Matthews for assisting
with the administrative duties. Also thanks to David Tolpa for managing the site and promptly dealing with the
wasps nesting in the judge’s booth’s door in ring 1.
Feedback from those in attendance indicate that a 4th annual GIAG would be well attended.
Thank You,
Liane Parker
Education Chairperson

Give It A Go Fun Show, July 26th
It was a very hot day but everyone had fun at the GIAG fun show. Our judge was Lynne Poole from Ontario, an
EC Basic Judge and WSDAC Intermediate Judge. She was certainly able to use all her skills as the show ended
up with half of each – 15 English tests and 15 Western tests.
Most of the competitors were also clinic attendees but there were a number who came out just for the show.
It was wonderful to see so many new names, people that were either showing for the first time or coming
back to showing after a break. Hopefully we will see them out at future DW shows.

Pan Am Games 2015
The television coverage was terrible – CBC didn’t show any of the dressage and they wouldn’t allow anyone
else to broadcast it either – but the results for the Canadian team were very good! They kept right up with the
strong American team and captured a silver medal in the team competition and Chris von Martels won the
individual bronze.
The tests at the Pan Am Games are at a slightly lower level than what we are used to seeing at the Olympics
or the World Equestrian Games but still with a very high level of skill.
