Molly Malone’s hosts K9 Lifesavers Fundraiser Be sure to reserve Monday, September 13th for a special get-together, and meet us at Molly Malone’s Saloon in Barrack’s Row for great food, great company and a great cause. From 6pm to 8pm you can celebrate the end of summer and help raise funds and awareness for K9 Lifesavers, a dedicated and hard-working dog and puppy rescue organization. K9 Lifesavers is a nonprofit group that saves homeless and abandoned dogs and puppies from high-kill shelters, accepts them from owners that can no longer take care of them, and other high-risk situations. After caring for the doggies, they match their furry guests with good families or individuals that have been carefully screened, leading to a happy end for all involved. They offer support of all kinds to interested dog owners, such as providing education and resources to help with positive behavior training, doggy well-being, and the importance of proactive spaying and neutering, canine nutrition and much more. Please come and join us! Have tons of fun and help our four legged friends at the same time! See you there! All dogs above are from the K9 Lifesavers website and are adoptable NOW! We thank all of you that help Historic Congressional Cemetery look beautiful. Not only do you clean up after your own dog, but you pick up after those dogs that snuck in a moment’s relief when their owner didn’t see. You pick up paper cups, plastic bags and even dirty diapers (yes…true!). Your caring does not go unnoticed, and we wanted to take a moment and let you know your endeavors do not go unthanked. Thank you each and every one! And don’t forget to sign the volunteer book on the back porch after any work you do. Every volunteer hour signed in is like making a donation to the cemetery, and every little bit counts! here. Continue newsletter text here. Continue new Panzanella text here. Soak pieces in water until wet through. Remove bread pieces from water and squeeze with your hands until nearly dry and crumbles easily. Make sure the bread is good baker’s bread, a Pugliese or light colored whole grain will do, just not processed white bread. If soaking processed white bread, your results will be a sticky gooey paste instead of the crumbly bits you’ll want for this salad. Chop tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and basil as you like and add them to the reconstituted bread crumbs. Add a pinch or so of salt and mix well with spatula. Add olive oil and balsamic vinegar, mix well. Can be served immediately, however left to marinate and chill in the ‘fridge for a couple of hours does wonderful things to the flavor of this dish. Serve on a lovely dish and garnish with capers and fresh basil. It’s a great salad on its own, or accompanies roast or grilled chicken very well. If pairing with wine, nothing beats a traditional Chianti Classico…except maybe a slightly aged Vino Nobile di Montepulciano! Buon appetito! The dog is a yes-animal, very popular with people who can't afford to keep a yes-man. ~Robertson Davies September, 2010 Notes For Good Dogs Remember, when you see a visitor to the cemetery taking a walk, taking a tour, or most importantly, visiting a grave…please keep your master under control. Steer them away from the visitor, and be on your best behavior. Don’t do anything to encourage your human to yell. Many visitors to the cemetery are here expecting a peaceful, serene setting. Having your favorite primate screaming your name for everyone to hear might be very good for your ego, but not for the image of your preferred place to play.
