BRC PROGRESS UPDATE ISSUE 36 Contract Update - Week 51 Welcome to this latest BRC update. We are just 15 weeks away from the start of teaching for the next academic year and this update shows pictures of finished spaces, spaces that are nearing completion, as well as timetables for moves and confirmation of room allocation for curriculum zoning and staff rooms. This next photo shows the Principal, Nigel Duncan, PA to the Director of Capital Projects, Claire Quint, the Estates Manager, Nelson Williams, and Andy Martin, the Senior Site Manager from Bouygues admiring one of the new Art Studios that will be handed over for use by the College in the next two weeks. These first two pictures were taken last week and show the corner of the new building and its interface with building A. Once the hoardings are down in September we are confident the view will match or better the computer generated images. This photo shows one of the brand new classrooms that we have created in B building complete with AV installed and ready to go for teaching in September. BRC PROGRESS UPDATE In this picture you can see the operatives working on the new lift shaft which will provide full disabled access to the new building plus A and B buildings. The lift is being clad in the same Trespa that we have used on the roof and to frame the entrance ways into the new and refurbished buildings. This gives a similar aesthetic as to a well designed retail space - and once it is full of chairs and cutting stations the eye will be drawn down from the ceiling. The photo on the next page shows the temporary crane that is being used to lift the glass panes into the new building. This photo shows the hair training salon with ceiling painted, containment and air handling units in place. We have installed hardboard/acoustic panel/foam/hardboard/acoustic panel and plasterboard ceiling throughout the ground floor of the new building to help insulate any bass reverberations that may come from the performing art spaces above. The mechanical and electrical services are then hung below the ceiling so that they do not tamper with the acoustic insulation. BRC PROGRESS UPDATE This is the new gaming and computing suite taking form nicely on the prime north west corner of the new building. The next photo shows the view from the hair training salon north east out towards D building and the Avenue. BRC PROGRESS UPDATE Here is Leah Palmer showing her delight at seeing IT teaching rooms ready 15 weeks before teaching starts next year. This photo shows the view of the new building from our beautifully refurbished B building, ready for teaching in September. This picture shows the new hair and beauty staff room. The next photo is of one of our new science rooms nearly ready to receive tables and chairs. The science rooms have fixed power, water and gas stations but are then designed to allow 4 different table layouts depending on subject, room occupancy and teaching style. Zoning Following consultation with the Director of Curriculum at BRC we have now revised the zoning arrangements in the new Northern Campus. A summary of rooms assigned to each curriculum area is attached below. Key changes from earlier drafts include the decision to teach functional skills English and Maths within the ‘home’ curriculum zone and some switches of curriculum within A and B to minimise further moves in the summer. The general principle remains that specialist spaces are on the ground BRC PROGRESS UPDATE and first floors (B and the new building) whilst general purpose classrooms and IT rooms are on the upper floors. Staff rooms All teaching staff will be located in staffrooms in A, B or D buildings. These have now been allocated. If you have any questions regarding the staff room allocations please speak to your programme manager or Head of Department or email your query directly to [email protected] Moves We are pleased to announce that we will be taking occupation of the building ahead of schedule. The visual arts teams will be setting up their summer exhibition on the ground floor of B building in readiness for the opening of the show on 25 June. We plan to move all staff from the south site into the new staff rooms in the north site before the summer holidays. Packing crates will be distributed in the first week of July and a team of moves specialists will move crates into the designated spaces in the new staffrooms on 7 or 8 July. In the next 2 to 3 weeks programme managers will work with the Director of Curriculum to assign individual workstations to each member of staff. The contract planned and date for completion of works to the new building is 26 July. We are very pleased to be taking occupation of the building ahead of this date. However, we will not be able to move into the new building until it is ready. We have agreed to commence our audio visual and special equipment installation during the middle of August in order to make ready these new spaces for teaching to start in September.
