Why is Alignment Important?
Alignment Issues in a Vacuum Metallizer can Cause:
AIMCAL.org
•
•
•
Production of scrap or inferior product quality
a. Tracking Issues - Wrinkling
b. Poor Product – Non-recyclable scrap
Reduced production speed
Unplanned Downtime
a. Premature Equipment Life
b. Readjustments for Production needs
Alignment Difficulties in a Vacuum Metallizer:
• Roll assembly is in a different position when
it is outside of the vacuum chamber compared
to when it is inside of the chamber

Conventional Methods
Traditional Measurement methods
AIMCAL.org
•
•
The quality of the measurement depends largely on the experience of
the specialist in charge of the job
Operator must be able to see the ends of the roll
•
For each roller, the systems needs to be re-adjusted
Page 6 t
What’s different?
An optical measurement system consists of the following
components:
Optical Scale
Baseline
AIMCAL.org
Alignment
(Control)
Instrument
Sight Level (SL)
Telescopic
Transit
Square (TTS)
Brass
Plug (BP)
Optical Target
Line Of
Sight (LOS)
Stick on Target
Each component has its own defined (in-)accuracy

Inertial Technology
AIMCAL.org
PARALIGN® is the first roller alignment system that works with inertial technology.
It is not restricted by optical limitations.
•
No line-of-sight is required
•
Measures rolls with ringlaser
gyroscopes as used in the space
shuttle
•
Completely self contained. No
subjective human interpretation.

Page 9 t
How does it work?
AIMCAL.org
PARALIGN® Highly Precise Ringlaser Gyroscopes
No mechanical movement takes place inside a
ringlaser gyroscope – the laser pulse is the
moving part.
Two lasers travel between three mirrors at the
constant speed of light. If the Paralign is moved,
the lasers inside will hit one of the mirrors
faster.
Not GPS!
Preciseness .00005 inches per inch
40” roll = .002”
60” roll = .003”
80” roll = .004”
+/- .001”
+/- .0015”
+/- .002”

The SWEEP Method
The SWEEP method is used to determine the relative position of a roller in space
This means that the PARALIGN® glides over the surface of the roller that needs to be measured.
A rotation of just 20 degrees over the surface is generally sufficient to compute the axis of
rotation.

Summary
•
Preparation is shorter than conventional methods
•
Measurements can be taken very quickly: Fastest method available.
PARALIGN® determines the alignment condition of a large number of
rolls faster than any other known method.
•
Highly precise
•
No line-of-sight is required
•
Results do not depend on plant conditions.
•
Measurement results do not depend on the user.
Human error is avoided as it is not necessary to read the alignment values
from the ocular of a theodolite or from a tape measure.
•
Easy-to-understand graphic & numerical report of the measurement results
The alignment results measured by PARALIGN® are generated automatically
and can be archived or distributed in a MicroSoft EXCEL workbook.
