SHOOTING STRAIGHT FCA Golf Ministry Newsletter–Summer, 2006 2006 “Breakfast with the Pros” events launched from TPC Sawgrass Ponte Vedra Beach, FL—The FCA Golf annual “Breakfast with the Pros” at The Players Championship at Sawgrass, the first breakfast Tour outreach event of the season, took place on March 22 at the Sawgrass Marriott. Nearly 850 junior golfers, coaches, instructors, sponsors, and adults and families were present to hear TPC defending champion and local golf hero Fred Funk. Funk, interviewed by PGA Tour Chaplain Larry Moody, shared powerfully about his golf career and how the Lord has impacted his life, family, and golf. “These past years, we’ve relied on a lot of faith,” he said. “You’re only as strong as your foundation; God is that.” Other Pros in attendance Defending Players Champion Fred Funk with the No. 1 players for their were Tom Lehman, Calvin Peete, stands respective school golf teams. Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Ben Crane, Bart Bryant, Jonathan Byrd, Doug Barron, and Wally Armstrong, who all sat at tables with student golfers from nearly 40 northeast Florida high schools and colleges. Serving as emcee for the event was nationally acclaimed Christian speaker and recently named Nationwide Tour Chaplian Jay Laffoon. Jay’s wit and wisdom added an entertaining new dimension to the Breakfast including a unique gospel presentation using Funk, Lehman, Cink, and Johnson as characters. More on Breakfast events inside, page 2–3 FCA Golf hosts Heritage Classic Easter Sunday sunrise service Hilton Head Island, SC— Early Easter Sunday, Verizon Heritage Classic workers and volunteers, PGA Tour Staff, spectators, CBS employees, and PGA Players and their families assembled in the 18th green grandstands at the famous Harbor Town Golf Links in Sea Pines Plantation. Zach shared the stage with his wife in front of one of the largest crowds ever at the annual Augusta Golf breakfast— 670 people—held April 4 at Warren Baptist Church. The Verizon Heritage Classic John Scott with Jonathan Byrd at the annual Christian Heritage Breakfast in Hilton Head Island, SC, April 11. This event drew a crowd of more than 600 and marked the 10th year John Scott has organized the program prior to the start of The Verizon Heritage PGA Tournament. Among the attendees were community leaders, representatives from sports groups and churches, and area students. Zurich Classic of New Orleans Zach and Kim casually talked about their life as a married couple on the PGA Tour. Since they began their life together they have committed their lives to giving God all the glory. TPC Sawgrass Chapel Service The Shell Houston Open Jim Esary interviews Jeff Gove at the outreach event for the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Houston FCA Rep Wade Hopkins, Lee Janzen, and FCA Golf’s Jim Esary. Lee did a great job of keeping it real to a group of Houston FCA staff and volunteers at Redstone Golf Club, site of the Shell Houston Open. The event took place at a high school assembly. When asked who was impacted by the hurricane (Katrina), every hand shot up. Jim and Jeff then had a chance to pray with the affected students, as well as the faculty and staff who were also present. FCA Golf’s Jim Esary, the number one high school football recruit in the country Timmy Tebow, and former FCA Golf Director Rev. John Dolaghan at the Sunday morning Chapel service on the 18th green at the TPC at Sawgrass. Tebow, the University of Florida freshman quarterback who led a local high school to a state championship in football last fall, was the morning’s main speaker and shared his testimony. While the main speaker for the annual event is usually given by a golfer, Tebow’s local prominence and his connections to FCA made it a natural fit. Emcee Jay Laffoon put Lehman and Johnson side by side, then put Funk (Sin) in between them, representing what comes between God and man. Close to 100 of the students, coaches, and adults indicated they had made a commitment to Christ. Laffoon brought up the 6’4” Cink (Jesus) and placed him in front of the 5’8” Funk (Sin), who disappeared from view, representing the power on Jesus Christ to cover sin and bridge the gap between God and Man. Page 5 Page 5 Baddeley Shooting Straight Continued from page 1 At the service, Aaron told of his life as a boy and how, after ruling out cricket, he decided to pursue golf with passion in his teens. He won the Australian Open as an 18-year-old amateur and then defended his title the next year as a professional. He came to the U.S. Tour with high hopes of winning quickly and often. He also told of his lifechanging personal acceptance of Jesus Christ and how after receiving the Holy Spirit he will never be the same. “God did not promise me success, but He does expect me to do my best each and every day. No matter what happens this afternoon— win or not—I will be trying to do my best for Jesus.” Aaron closed with the first portion of James 4:8 “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you . . . Meet Megan Turnball: FCA Golf ’s intern Megan Turnball is FCA Golf’s 2006 summer intern. She arrived on May 17th and will be with us until August 10th, when she has to return for her senior year at Wheaton College in Illinois. She is majoring in Sociology with a minor in History at Wheaton—a private, interdenominational, coed Christian college just outside of Chicago. go directly to the first golf camp of the season, which will be held at the World Golf Village. There, this elite team will have hands-on experience with more than 50 campers to challenge them spiritually. Upcoming Ministry Events Tour Studies—The NGA and Nationwide Tours are in full swing and so are the weekly Bible studies and outreach events. Marty Jacobus has been touring around with the NGA/Hooters Tour, which has been a great opportunity to build relationships and share wisdom from the Bible. Jay Laffoon has been to many of the Nationwide events and is making great progress, measured by the increased attendance at the studies. 2006 FCA International Pro-Am—The 2006 event will be held Monday, October 30th, at the exclusive Isleworth Country Club in Orlando, Florida, which is directly following the PGA Tour event in nearby Palm Harbor, Florida.
