MESSAGE | TO OUR COMMUNITY
Dear Friends:
As the past financial year came to a close, we were collectively
relieved and pleased that the hard work and difficult decisions of
the past few years were finally getting us the results we wanted to
realize. Both our operational (program) outcomes and our financial
performances were exceptional.
We remain committed to providing quality services in our
communities, at a time when we face an increasing demand for
services with diminishing sources of traditional funding. Tough
decisions, hard work from our many fine staff and a continued
confidence in us from those we served have all been critical in
achieving the very positive results.
Lead
Carlton D. Pendleton
President & CEO
Equally impressive has been the continued support from our friends
and donors. Without your continued support, vital components
which make our programs special would be seriously compromised.
So it is, with my sincere appreciation, on behalf of staff, board and
our clients, that we thank you for your kindness and generosity. Your
support has had a very positive affect on the morale of the agency,
given the very tough economy and the many challenges the state
budget presents to so many of us.
Many thanks,
Carl

VOLUNTEER PROFILE | BARBARA WALDROUP
Barbara Waldroup has volunteered at Sweetser for nearly ten years, and in that time
has provided an immeasurable amount of support to the Volunteer Program. Barbara
says, “I just like the whole atmosphere of being involved with Sweetser. Everyone
is nice, and welcoming, and the work being done is really satisfying.”
Barbara moved to Maine from Burlington, Massachusetts in 2002, and fell in love
with the Saco area. Being retired, though, she was looking for something to keep
busy, and started her volunteer work with Sweetser through RSVP, the Retired
and Senior Volunteer Program. Barbara started out in Sweetser’s Volunteer
Services program by setting up a database to keep track of the hundreds of
volunteers and their hours. She continues to organize timesheets and supervisory
report forms on a weekly basis. Barbara also helps organize the annual volunteer
appreciation dinner, and designs all the invitations.
Linda Danielson, Director of the Volunteer Program says, “Barbara is full of
energy and has been invaluable to me in helping run the program smoothly and
efficiently.”
In her professional career, Barbara worked for a technology company, and still
enjoys working with computers. In her spare time, she tinkers with her computer
at home, and tends to her seven flower gardens. She loves animals, and has a dog
and cat, which travel with her when she returns to visit family in Massachusetts.
Barbara is also very involved with her family, which includes two sons, a daughter,
three grandsons and her great-grandchildren, including Rachel, who has even
pitched in with her at Sweetser on occasion.
Unum employees volunteering during United
Way’s Day of Caring paint the fence in front of
The School at Sweetser in Saco.
Volunteers are becoming a more crucial resource with each passing year, due to economic realities and other factors.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or a mentor, e-mail [email protected], or call 207.373.3006.

INDIVIDUALS & CORPORATE SUPPORT MAKE IMPACT
Nearly 2,400 donors supported Sweetser this fiscal year. Many of these donations are from loyal
supporters who give annually to help create promising futures for those in need.
Despite a difficult economy, several businesses and corporations have stepped up to support
our two major fundraising events – the Sweetser/KeyBank Sold on Kids Auction & Dinner and
the Sweetser/Prime Motor Group Golf Classic. We are grateful to the generosity of other major
sponsors who have joined KeyBank and Prime Motor Group in supporting these two events.
These businesses are listed in the “Contributors Section” of this annual report. Thanks to their
generosity, these development efforts generated nearly $150,000.

Our special events depend on corporate support and Sweetser programs rely on support from
friends like you. Thank you for your investment in Sweetser. Your support is making a significant
difference in the lives of those who depend on our services.
DONOR PROFILE | CAROL THORNE
Carol Thorne has been involved with Sweetser for over 20 years, and while that
involvement has taken various shapes and forms, she has always been proud of
her service and affiliation with the organization.
Carol initially became involved with Sweetser through a previous
employer, who was a member of Sweetser’s Board of Directors. When
that member’s term expired, Carol was asked to step into the role, and
she eagerly joined the Board of Directors. She has continued to serve in
that capacity, and is also a member of the Development Committee.
Carol was also one of the original committee members for what is now
called the annual Sold on Kids Auction. After the second year of her
involvement, she was asked to chair the Auction Committee. During the
early years of the auction, money was raised in conjunction with the golf
tournament, and primarily for children in the crisis centers. The auction
continues to be a highlight in Sweetser’s fundraising calendar, as well as a
joy for Carol as she remains involved in the planning of the event to this day. She
enjoys helping choose the themes and solicit items for each year’s event.
A vocal supporter of Sweetser, she is proud to tell people about the organization as well as its
mission and how they can become involved. She always strives to do as much as she can, and visits
other Sweetser locations throughout Maine when the opportunity presents itself.
Support
Carol was born and raised in Texas, and moved to Maine in 1967, upon her marriage. She and her
husband have raised two children. Carol also has three grandchildren, one of whom will sing at the
2012 Sold on Kids Auction. She resides in South Portland with her husband.
“I love serving on Sweetser’s Board! It is a commitment to thousands of people!”

EMPLOYEE PROFILE | MARC KAPLAN, D.O.
Marc Kaplan, D.O., has been with Sweetser since 1997, and during his tenure, has not only provided
psychiatric treatment, but been an ardent supporter of furthering Sweetser’s mission.
Dr. Kaplan received his degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic
Medicine and was the first osteopathic physician accepted into Maine Medical Center’s
psychiatry residency program. He stayed at MMC for a fellowship in child psychiatry, and at
the time, fellows rotated through residential programs at Sweetser. His rotation through the
Saco Family Focus Program, under the direction of Andrea LeMoal, PsyD, convinced him that the
work being done here was the most effective treatment for the majority of children with severe
emotional and behavioral problems. Based on that experience, working for Sweetser was Dr.
Kaplan’s first choice upon completion of his fellowship in 1997.
Serve
Dr. Kaplan’s many years of working on the frontline, providing psychiatric care for children, adolescents
and adults in both outpatient and residential settings, provided him with the confidence to assume the role
of Medical Director. Since stepping into that role, Dr. Kaplan has largely focused on two primary areas: the
integration of behavioral health services into primary care practices and the development of Sweetser’s
outpatient psychiatric programs.
While serving at Sweetser, Dr. Kaplan continues to value his clinical role, providing all psychiatric care for the
six residential programs on the Saco campus. His work at Sweetser has also garnered national recognition;
in 2011, he was named to the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare’s Psychiatric Leadership
Development Program. As a member of the Psychiatric Leadership Development Program, Dr. Kaplan joined
other medical directors from throughout the nation in working to design, implement and improve innovative
treatment and support services. The program also nurtures participating psychiatrists as leaders that can inform
public policy in their organization and the broader behavioral health system. As part of the leadership program,
Dr. Kaplan joined a team of other mental health providers in Washington DC, meeting directly with Senators
Snowe and Collins and policy advisors at the congressional offices of Representatives Michaud and Pingree, to
advocate for preserving funding for critical mental health services.
In his free time, Dr. Kaplan enjoys hiking, playing drums, guitar and songwriting. In addition to his professional
roles, this year has also been a busy one in his personal life, as his 17-year-old daughter is deep in the college
application process.

CLIENT PROFILE | CHRISTIAN BUTLER
Christian Butler came to the School at Sweetser in Saco at the beginning of his sophomore year
and graduated in June, 2011. His family, including his younger twin sisters, all attended the
ceremony to cheer on his accomplishment.
While a student at the School, he gained self-confidence and learned how to interact with
his peers. He joined the school choir, and also enjoyed working in the Experiential Learning
program on the Sweetser Farm. He also participated in the art program, which brought in
visiting artists from throughout Maine. He discovered a love for drawing and painting, one
which he continues to pursue to this day. He is currently painting in acrylics, with a focus
on still life subjects. Because of his love for the arts, he is interested in pursuing an art
degree and using his knowledge to teach people with mental illness.
Christian said, “I loved my time at Sweetser, it was the most supportive environment. I
got the skills to be able to move on, and that has been the best improvement in my life.”
Since graduation, Christian worked as an usher at the Monmouth Theater, where he
even had small roles in the plays, and also volunteered at his local food bank. He has also
taken college assessment testing where he passed the math portion, is taking an adult
education course to hone his English writing skills, and has also engaged in a vocational
process for skills assessment.
Christian is currently in residential care in Litchfield, and goes home every weekend. He
and his family are actively looking for another facility he can relocate to, as a step toward
his independence. He enjoys doing puzzles, roller skating and likes to read; he is almost
done reading the entire Harry Potter series. He has toured University of Maine at Augusta
and is hoping to attend classes there after he completes his English course.
Christian enjoyed making cookies for
horses on the Ricker Farm at The School
at Sweetser in Saco.
His mother and legal guardian, Wendy Wright, states, “I am a HUGE advocate for Sweetser and their programs.
What they have done for our family is saved it from becoming another sad statistic of dysfunctionality. With
the help of crisis intervention, counseling, teachers and wonderful case managers at the School, Christian is
growing into the man I knew he could be. We now know that we are a work in progress, as a family, and for
today, not only are we a success, we are miracles. Thank you Sweetser.”

Sweetser Corporators 2011-2012
Sweetser’s corporators help represent the organization in their communities, provide information to Sweetser about the needs of children and
families in their communities, and attend annual meetings. A heartfelt thanks to all of our corporators for their compassion and support.
