Superintendent’s Message to Parents, Guardians & Community Members
Parents seeking the best education fit for their son or daughter need not look any further than the myriad of public schools in the Los
Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Some have established themselves as premier performing arts centers, while still others emphasize
math, science, and language immersion that prepare students for the 21st century and beyond. In short, there’s an LAUSD school for every child.
Here is a sampling of some of our school gems hidden in plain sight:
Mark Twain Middle School (API 706) touts itself as “The Westside’s Best Kept Secret” and for good reason. Student achievement continues on
a dramatic upward trajectory thanks to rigorous academics and creative instruction. Math students, for example, ground wheat berries into flour
and make loaves of organic bread as they calculate the yield of their garden. A dual language Spanish-English program is also a big attraction. So
is a strong arts program featuring English Handbell Ringers; three levels of band and orchestra, singing and dance.
Madison Elementary School (API 803) clearly values student achievement as evidenced by its designation as a 2010 California Distinguished
School, and a more than 100 point gain on the state Academic Performance Index (API) since opening in 2005. The performing arts program has
partnerships with the Getty Museum and with Education Through Music—Los Angeles. What’s more, the South Gate campus is establishing a
relationship with a primary school in China.
Harbor Teacher Preparatory Academy (API 936) graduates college graduates. Well, not quite. However, highly-motivated students who attend
the academy can complete the first two years of college and earn an associate of arts degree while also earning a high school diploma. This small
school accelerates the pace of learning in an academic environment that is rigorous, demanding and competitive. It is located in Wilmington on
the campus of Harbor Community College.
These are just a few of LAUSD highlights. Let this brochure introduce you to this District’s numerous and varied academic offerings, and
award-winning schools. And, if the school fits, we hope you’ll remain or become a part of the LAUSD family.

Mission: The Mission of Local District 6 is to align all resources in supporting schools to reach the LAUSD
mission of ensuring that every student graduate college prepared and career ready.
Local District 6 is composed of 32 elementary schools, six middle schools, six high schools, three primary
centers, 12 magnets, two continuation high schools, five early education centers and three span schools serving 56,000 students. Students
residing within the communities of Huntington Park, Vernon, South Gate, Maywood, Cudahy and Bell are served by the schools in the Local
District. Local District 6 is very proud of the recognition recently earned by the two California Distinguished Schools, Madison Elementary
(API 803) and Maywood Elementary (API 839). The 2010/2011 school year saw the opening of South Region Middle School #2 which is
organized in two small learning communities. One of the small learning communities focuses upon the arts and media and the second
emphasizes global studies. Opening on the Early Start calendar was South Region Elementary #3, an elementary school which has also
opened with two small learning communities emphasizing project based learning. Two new Early Education Centers will be opening in Fall
2010 in order to continue expanding the opportunities given to preschool age students in order that they become socially and academically
prepared for Kindergarten.
The schools in Local District 6 are focused upon ensuring that each student is afforded a guaranteed viable curriculum
by working on selecting essential standards for each core content area and ensuring that sufficient
instructional time is provided for effective first teaching. Educators are committed to working
collaboratively to improve student learning and provide students with opportunities to expand
their literacy skills throughout the instructional day.
On any given day, students enrolled in the Local District 6 schools can be found engaged in a
variety of theme-based instructional activities which prepare them for post secondary
experiences and which provide them with opportunities to make the connection between their
learning and real life experiences. Ellen Ochoa Learning Center (K-8) emphasizes math and

science experiences which are enhanced by the school’s partnership as a NASA Explorer school. This has enabled students to develop an
understanding of the relevancy of their learning while realizing the opportunities which abound for their future. Students at the
International Studies Learning Center (6-12) are engaged in studies which prepare them to become the global citizens needed for the 21st
Century workforce and are exposed to the Pacific Rim languages giving them the added advantage
needed for a competitive job market.
The commitment of the school communities within Local District 6 is to continually build upon a
culture of excellence for each student, in each classroom and in every school.

Bryson Elementary has strong ties to the community and hosts a skilled and dedicated group of teachers and staff that are committed to high
academic goals, providing the knowledge and skills necessary for lifelong learning.
In order to showcase the high academic goals and student successes, each year in October Bryson annually hosts “Family Literacy Night at the
Park” at the South Gate Community Golf Course. There teachers, students, parents, district, and city officials read around campfires, sharing
their love of reading and stressing the importance of literacy to over 800 participants. In February, Bryson hosts “Family Math and Science

Night” where each classroom presents hands on math and science demonstrations, experiments and plays for our parents and community
members. In addition to high academic standards, Bryson staff focuses on creating a school culture of kindness and compassion.
This year, Bryson will participate in “Rachel’s Challenge,” a curriculum that teaches students and staff how to ignite and sustain a deliberate
chain reaction of kindness. “Rachel’s Challenge” will culminate with an end of the year celebration to honor students for their hard work in
creating a climate of kindness and serve as a way to involve parents and the South Gate Community.

The students, staff and parents are very proud of many aspects of the work that is being done at Corona Avenue Elementary. In fact, next
year Corona Avenue Elementary School will celebrate 100 years of preparing students in Bell for a life of continual learning. One aspect of the
exemplary work we are doing now involves the University of Southern California and our Project Linking Learning program. In this area, the
school’s staff is differentiating or customizing instruction with the gifted learners. Moreover, staff and students are able to expand their
learning through the understanding of the Depth and Complexity concepts, Writer’s Workshop, and the Response to Intervention (RTI) across
the curriculum.
Corona is particularly known for the work the school has done with students with disabilities. This year Corona has three Autism programs
that allow parents to have their students in the same school setting for the students’ growth during their child’s elementary years. Corona’s
community is pleased with the review of the English Language Development program from the Office of Civil Rights, which indicated that the
parents and staff have been doing an outstanding job implementing strategies from the ELD Practicum to develop the language skills of
second language learners. Finally, Corona’s staff is known for their commitment and collaboration to improve instruction for all students.

The entire Florence Avenue Elementary community takes pride in providing a collaborative culture in which improvements in teaching and
learning are recognized, valued and supported.
At our school, teachers work together in Professional Learning Communities to build shared understandings about state standards and to
renew their commitment to achieving the Florence Avenue vision of improving student achievement by improving teacher practice. The
administrative team and teachers work directly with parents to deliver an instruction that meets students’ individual needs.
Inviting parents to become active participants in our English Immersion, Dual
Language and Guided Reading programs, we have formed partnerships that have
strengthened our instructional program and supported our achievement goals.
We recognize and celebrate student success in areas such as Reclassification,
Attendance, Mathematics and Reading Achievement during weekly assemblies.
These assemblies help to keep our school focused on attaining high levels of
learning for all students. At Florence Avenue Elementary, we are dedicated to
bringing together the resources of the school, family members, and teachers to
positively affect student and adult learning. By promoting a climate of inclusion
and caring, we have created a unique place to learn and grow as a community that
believes that all children can go to college.

MENTARY
Woodlawn is a home away from home. The moment you walk onto the campus, you know you are
in a unique place filled with caring individuals who behave like family. Students, parents,
teachers, secretaries, administrators or custodians can’t be separated by category because their
interactions, conversations, and passion for learning are equal. Woodlawn is a community of
proud learners who greet everyone with a smile, looking straight into their eyes to show their
pride and confidence.
Woodlawn is a school where the value for an individual’s culture is supported with successful
Waiver Bilingual and Dual Language Programs. Kindergarten parents consistently request that
their children participate in programs that will prepare them to be successful citizens of the world. English-only parents want their children
to have access to a second language so they can begin to prepare for college entrance requirements from the start of school. Parents of EL

students request Waiver Bilingual programs because they want their children to have access to the content in their strongest language, one
they can support at home. The community also knows that the results of the CST programs speak for the value of the Waiver Bilingual
Program, almost 70% of EL students in Waiver Bilingual Programs score Proficient or Advanced in ELA and 87% meet benchmark in
Mathematics. Woodlawn is a place where reading is valued. Students can’t wait to share their latest discovery, “The Miraculous Journey of
Edward Tulane”, “Captain Underpants”, “Boys Read Boys Write”. Once a month, about 300 parents come to read with their children in the
classroom in the morning and for Library Night in the evening. A reading marathon takes place twice a year, in conjunction with a Book Fair,
with students winning books. The reward for reading is READING!
Science, Social Studies, and ELD are all interwoven in culminating tasks where students can share their content knowledge via performances
or projects. Parents are invited to share in their children’s learning during these culminating tasks’ presentations. But parents at Woodlawn
don’t need an invitation. More than 40 parents can be found on campus at any given time, helping or tutoring in classrooms, preparing
materials, attending classes themselves, or helping with the children on the yard.
Woodlawn is a small piece of heaven for over 900 students and their families. Let us share it with you!

Ellen Ochoa Learning Center, a K-8 Span school in the cities of Bell and Cudahy, provides a rich and varied learning environment for its
students. Strengthened by a staff that includes 13 National Board Certified teachers (20% of the staff), Dual Language classes are available
in grades K – 6 to allow students to become truly bilingual, bi-literate members of society. This program will expand to the 8th grade in the
next two years.
Students in grades 6 - 8 are taught in core subjects (English, math, science and social studies), which allow teachers to interconnect lessons
across subject areas while also allowing for a more personalized learning environment. In addition, Ellen Ochoa Learning Center, named for
the first Latina astronaut in space, is a proud NASA Explorer School whose students and teachers have taken advantage of field trips to the
Jet Propulsion Laboratory, teleconferencing opportunities with NASA scientists, and
professional development institutes in Texas, Florida, and Alabama. Finally, as a Getty
Institute school, over 40% of the staff has been trained and is strongly committed to
integrating the arts into all core curricular areas.

Elizabeth Learning Center is unique within LAUSD, as its programs span from prekindergarten through grade 12. The pre-K and elementary programs focus on rich
English language development through the core curriculum and instrumental music,
dance, and the visual arts.
Most of ELC’s elementary students enroll in its middle school program, where students
take pre-college preparatory courses in all core subjects alongside physical education
and visual/performing arts and academic support elective classes.
The ELC high school program is by application only: students who live within the ELC
attendance boundary in the cities of Cudahy and Bell are invited to apply for one of
ELC’s two California Partnership Academy college-preparatory career programs: the
Health Academy or the Information Technology Academy. The high school admission
process includes a written application and essays, teacher recommendations, and an
interview.
While in high school, ELC students complete not only the LAUSD graduation
requirements and the University of California A-G requirements that lead to a diploma, but all students also complete a rigorous three-year
career-based program leading to California state career-readiness certification. Upon earning both the diploma and certificate, ELC graduates
can either continue their post-secondary education or they can enter the business world armed with certified skills and knowledge.
The California Department of Education’s Secondary, Career, and Adult Learning Division recently nominated ELC’s Health Academy as a
program of excellence for its high quality, rigorous Career Technical Education program that ensures both college and career readiness.
ELC Bulldogs are also successful on the athletic fields and courts, earning citywide championships in nearly every sport in which it competes
within the small schools/magnet division of the LAUSD Interscholastic Athletics Committee.
Students, as well as adults within the Cudahy community, can also take adult school courses on campus through an extension of the
Huntington Park-Bell Community Adult School, which operates Monday through Thursday evenings and during the summer. ESL and parenting
classes are also available to the community through the ELC Family Center, which is open every day during the school year and is staffed fulltime by a licensed social worker and trained parent/community representatives.

South Gate Middle School is a single-track school. We have seven Small Learning Communities and a magnet school that have worked together
to develop an educational experience that has contributed to our academic growth and student success.
Some of our excellent programs include our school-wide Teamworks mentoring program. The SLC, Academy of Visual and Performing Arts,
sponsors “South Gate Idol” and “Dancing with the Students” to allow our students a venue to showcase their talents. We have a partnership
with Northrop Grumman, and this summer, one of our Science teachers along with one of her students attended “Space Camp.” South Gate
Middle School’s Math, Science Magnet School was recognized in 2009-2010, as a “Center of Merit.”
This year, we had many opportunities for parent involvement and our school-wide Beautification Day was an example of their participation and
support. Our wonderful Folklorico group performs at many of the local cities and school district events during the year. We are proud of our
history and continue to work hard as a school community to ensure that the students of South Gate Middle School are equipped for the
challenges of the 21st century—college prepared and career ready.

LIBRA Academy is the first pilot school to open in Local District 6; we opened our doors to 120 9th
graders on A-track last year. LIBRA is located on the campus of Huntington Park HS, and is part of
the Public School Choice 1.0 initiative and MOU by UTLA and LAUSD, to create 20 small, innovative
schools that follow this specific model.
LIBRA Academy will begin its second year of operation on August 30, 2010, and will house
approximately 220 9/10th grade students. By 2013, LIBRA will graduate its first senior class.
LIBRA offers high school students a very personalized school environment, which incorporates an advisory class, career pathways, and
performance assessments. We incorporate the Scales of Justice as our logo, representing our motto to help students “balance character,
mind, and well-being.” Pilot schools such as ours, are unique in that we have autonomy over budget, staffing, governance, curriculum, and
calendar, to provide increased flexibility to organize our school in the best way possible to meet the needs of our students and community.
Pilot schools do not exceed 450 students, thus creating a safe, personal, and vision-driven environment for students.
LIBRA Academy is proud to announce that 96 percent of its first 9th grade class (120 students) promoted to the 10th grade with an average
daily attendance rate of 97 percent. We have recruited a new class of 117 9th graders for the 2010-11 school year. Our staff is comprised of
twelve teachers, one counselor, and a principal.

Maywood Academy High is a community-based school primarily servicing students from the City of Maywood and the surrounding communities
of Bell and Huntington Park. As a relatively new school, Maywood Academy is nationally
recognized as a Green School.
Maywood Academy places a priority on high academic achievement. This emphasis has
resulted in one of the highest graduation rates in the District. As a small high school with
only 1,300 students, the instructional setting is personalized by three small learning
communities: “Liberal Arts,” “Technology and Business,” and “Science.”
Maywood Academy provides students with the opportunity to engage in academic clubs such
as the Debate Team as well as numerous sports programs. In 2009-2010 The Debate Team
placed first in the Los Angeles Urban Championship. In the Los Angeles Metropolitan
event, the Debate Team placed second and fourth for Best Speakers. In the past three
years, the Boys Baseball Team has placed as a finalist in CIF Division III. In 2007-2008 &
