It’s their stories that matter
At age 77, Coastal Hospice patient Eddie O’Riely has a memory
as sharp as a tack and good stories to tell. And he loves telling them.
O’Riely still has a twinkle in his eye, but cancer has left him with
less energy than usual.
A lifelong bachelor, O’Riely was living alone in Brooklyn, NY,
where he was born and raised, until recently relocating to Salisbury
to stay with his niece, Kathryn DeRosa, and her husband who are
caring for him in their home. Coastal Hospice has come in to help.
DeRosa is herself battling cancer, and says she and Eddie are
“helping each other out.” They are going through boxes of old photos

Fiscal year 2013/14: A year of challenges and flexibility
A Message from
President
Alane Capen
Coastal Hospice has always consistently placed the needs of our patients first, while running an efficient,
fiscally responsible non-profit agency. During our last fiscal year, Coastal Hospice provided expert holistic
care to 988 patients and their families and more than 600 palliative consultations to inpatients at PRMC.
Through it all, we receive high ratings when we survey those whose loved ones have been in our care.
Last year, Medicare stepped up the pace in its efforts to gather data, evaluate services and reduce costs,
intensifying its reporting requirements of hospice providers. We now report, among other things, every
time a medication is filled, every visit from some of our disciplines (not all), and every time a nurse walks
into the room at Coastal Hospice at the Lake to perform a medical task.
I am pleased to report that Coastal Hospice has kept pace with these changes, successfully adapting our
processes. We have been proactive in educating staff members, adapting software programs and in testing
our reporting systems ahead of Medicare deadlines. Together, our clinical staff and information technology
team have managed each transition smoothly.
Medicare’s goal is ensuring all hospice providers deliver excellent care. We welcome the opportunity
to share openly information about how well we serve our patients and their families. Thank you for your
ongoing support. We pledge to continue to provide the Lower Shore with patient-centered hospice and
palliative care to bring peace and dignity for those we serve.

Ask
Dr. Waris
Medical Director
Q: What is palliative care and when do I need it?
A: Palliative care (pronounced pal’-lee-uh-tive) is specialized medical care for people with serious
illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of illness,
whatever the diagnosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and family.
Curative treatments for cancer and other diseases can cause symptoms such as pain, anxiety,
depression and sleeplessness. Palliative care helps alleviate these symptoms, improves the patient’s ability
to tolerate medical treatments and offers the patient the strength to carry on with daily life.
Palliative care is a holistic approach that becomes an extra layer of support. During treatments, for
virtually any illness, a visit with the palliative team can help. Since pain, stress and other symptoms can
profoundly affect quality of life, the earlier palliative care begins, the better for the patient.
Palliative care is not the same as hospice care, which is meant for people in their final months who no
longer seek curative treatments. Palliative care is available anytime during a serious illness. It is covered
by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance, but we never turn anyone away due to inability to pay.
Our palliative care team assists both inpatients and outpatients at Peninsula Regional Medical Center
in Salisbury. For more information, call the PRMC inpatient team at 410-543-4716 or the outpatient
team at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at PRMC at 410-912-2888.

Patient from Brooklyn shares life stories
of their big Irish-American family, and are proud of their
heritage, which includes a great-grandfather from Brooklyn
who was wounded at the battle of Antietam.
DeRosa pulls out a photo of O’Riely as a young man in his
Army uniform. He was drafted in 1957, at the same time and
into the same division as one of the most famous draftees of his
generation, Elvis Presley.
After completing basic training in Fort Hood, Texas in 1958,
the division headed to Brooklyn to catch the boat to Germany.
The rock star sailed with the rest of his Army mates, receiving no
special treatment along the way.
“Elvis was more handsome in real life,” O’Riely says. “Down
to earth. Real nice Southern boy. No airs about him whatsoever.
He had KP and guard duty just like everybody else.”
O’Riely asked Elvis to sign a few autographs for him, including
Eddie O’Riely
one for his elderly Irish grandmother.
“She was old school,” he recalls. “She asked me, ‘Is he that guy that was on the Ed Sullivan
show waggling? I don’t want that foolish thing’.”
For almost 25 years, O’Riely worked for Verizon in New York City as a telephone man, and
one of his assignments was installing modems in the World Trade Centers. He retired in 2001
just months before the towers fell on 9/11 as he watched from the roof of his Brooklyn home.
“We had worked in the telephone building right across from the World Trade Center,” he says.
“Some of the debris went through the telephone building. As a rule, we have seven or eight people
working there, but everybody was out at the time. There definitely would have been casualties.”
Before moving to Salisbury and coming under hospice care, O’Riely wasn’t eating well and
had lost more than 20 pounds. Under hospice care and with his niece and nephew’s good cooking,
O’Riely is gaining some of his weight back.
“I just didn’t feel good,” he says. “You could have a beautiful steak in front of me, and I could
eat maybe three pieces. It would just fill me up. Maybe it was being alone or tension, God knows
what it was. But I just couldn’t eat.”
“If he gets a hankering for something, we try to cook it as soon as we can,” DeRosa says.
O’Riely says he is being “well-taken care of.”
“The group from hospice has been wonderful. Just to know that somebody’s there … it’s a good
feeling. My stress is gone now.”
Among O’Riely’s plans is a trip that reminds him of a beach town he loves — Coney Island.
“I want to see Ocean City,” he says.
O’Riely plans to visit the Firefighter’s Memorial on the Ocean City Boardwalk while he’s there
to honor the firefighters from his hometown of Brooklyn.

Blues on the Bay event puts campaign to build
Coastal Hospice at the Ocean over halfway mark
Coastal Hospice’s Blues on the Bay event was a rousing success.
About 200 supporters attended the event at Macky’s in Ocean City
on Sept. 24 that raised $25,500 for the campaign to build Coastal
Hospice at the Ocean in Berlin.
Blues on the Bay 2014 put Coastal Hospice over the halfway
mark towards the goal of building Coastal Hospice at the Ocean,
a hospice residence and community outreach center that will
offer beds for patients who are not safe at home, palliative care,
counseling, grief support, and community wellness programs.
Macky and Pam Stansell generously opened the doors of their
restaurant once again as hosts of this important event. The Stansells
and many others in the community continue to show their
commitment to Coastal Hospice and the future vision of the
Coastal Hospice at the Ocean residence.

COASTAL KIDS SUPPORTIVE CARE
It’s all about teenage fun:
pizza, video games and the Ravens
Robert Peterson is 13 and a typical teenager who likes eating
cheese pizza, playing video games and cheering for the Baltimore
Ravens. An iPod in his hand streams his favorite YouTube videos.
Not everything about him is typical, though. Robert has
cancer. Today, he is propped up on pillows in the living room of
his Salisbury home watching TV, covered with a furry Ravens
blanket. His large family surrounds him with love, tickling him
until he giggles. Former teachers and classmates from Bennett
Middle School come to visit him often.
Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore referred Robert to
Coastal Kids Supportive Care, the pediatrics program of Coastal
Hospice, so his grandmother, Toni Peterson, would have support
in caring for him.
“At first, I said no to hospice,” Toni says. “I told them I’ll be
okay. I was used to doing things myself.”
Now, Toni depends on the support Coastal Kids gives her.
“Our nurse, Kristen (Forster), makes me stronger every day. I
have someone to talk to. She is the nicest person, and Robert has
gotten close to her and very comfortable with her.”
“When I first met Robert, he hid his face behind a pillow
and did not want to even look at me,” Kristen Forster says. “Now
when I visit, he smiles and laughs, and we are building a great
relationship. His grandmother, Toni, is an amazing woman, and
watching her care for Robert (and her other family members) is
truly an amazing sight to see. There is an abundance of love and
support surrounding Robert and his family. It has been a blessing
to meet Robert and is an honor for me to be able to support him
and his family during this journey.”
Toni talks about the day Robert took a turn for the worse, and
she didn’t know what to do for her grandson.
“It was Kristen’s day off, but she came over and sat with me
for more than two hours. The support she gives me is the most
wonderful thing. Anytime I have a concern, I can call her, and I
feel better, because she knows what to do. And she explained to
Robert Peterson in his school picture from 2013
me what’s going to happen. I am prepared now,” Toni says.
Nurse Kristen arranged to have Robert’s medication adjusted so he’d
feel better, secured a wheelchair for him, and provided other things to
make day-to-day life easier.
“She’s on things so fast,” Toni says. “And she always asks me ‘Do you
need anything?’”
Robert was able to go trick or treating on Halloween, dressed as a
skeleton, and is looking forward to seeing the Big Hero 6 movie.
“It’s all about letting Robert have some fun,” Toni says.

Hope and Healing with Horses helped children with loss
Coastal Hospice’s “Hope and Healing with Horses” event for children who experienced the death of someone close to them was held on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Kindred
Spirit Farm in Salisbury. The event was open to both hospice and non-hospice families.
The event provided the children with an opportunity to explore the emotions
associated with their loss. They groomed and rode horses and also shared their feelings
with other children who had experienced similar losses. While the children were busy
with these activities, the adults with them received guidance in helping them.
