Welcome to the 2011
Hill Country Film Festival
At the heart of great films are well-crafted stories. Behind each
of those stories are a collection of filmmakers, who have equally
compelling tales about the art of making movies. At the Hill Country
Film Festival (HCFF), stories are paramount. Whether it’s the
flickering image projected on the big screen or a candid reveal from
a director about his or her creative process, stories fascinate us.
As we enter our second year, HCFF is happy to once again
bring the stories of indie filmmakers to the greatest town in
Texas — Fredericksburg.

With seven features and 41 short films, there’s something for
everyone. Over the next two and a half days we hope you explore
these wonderful, powerful, emotional, thought-provoking and
entertaining movies from Texas and around the world.
Thanks to Gary Weeks and our team of programmers in California
who watched close to 100 hours of film. Thanks to Amy Miskovsky
and our management and marketing team in Texas. Their
leadership continually guides HCFF and the Hill Country Film
Society in the right direction.
A big thank you to our generous sponsors for having the foresight
to envision our festival’s potential growth and relevance. We value
your partnership.
Thanks also to Gene Oliver and the Stagecoach Theater, our
volunteers, our filmmakers, the City of Fredericksburg and you for
being our audience. Without the audience, the heart of HCFF would
cease to beat. Our story evolves because of you.
Enjoy the films. Enjoy Fredericksburg. Enjoy meeting fellow
moviegoers and filmmakers. After all, it’s the love of film and the
world of storytelling that brings us all together.

Surprise Sneak Preview Feature | USA | Thriller | 78 Minutes | Directed by Eric Steele
Cockpit: The Rule of Engagement | USA | Sci-fi |12 minutes | Texas Premiere |
Directed by Jesse Griffith
We are excited to bring back last year’s Hill Country Film Festival “Best Texas” award-winning
filmmakers Eric Steele and Hunter Wood (TOPEKA) for their new feature film shot entirely in Texas.
Edited by Sundance award-winning director David Lowery (St. Nick, Pioneer), photographed
by Sundance and SXSW alum Clay Liford (WUSS) and produced by acclaimed producer Adam
Donaghey (Lovers of Hate, Audrey the Trainwreck, WUSS, Earthling) this beautiful and disturbing
film brings fate and error into the desolate bayous of East Texas in Caddo Lake. Two drifters happen
upon a bed and breakfast owned by an elderly blind couple and their son, resulting in a weekend of
chaos and bad fortune. In the end, “the only thing that matters is family.”
HCFF Notes: Filmmakers from both films will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.

FRIDAY, APRIL 29 | 1 P.M. | BLOCK 3 | SHORT & FEATURE
Nice Tie, Italiano! | USA | Drama | 8 minutes | World Premiere | Directed by Evan Hart
As Giuseppe prepares for the most important meeting of his life, he is stalled by his desire for
perfection — a stubborn bow tie and the nearly-perfect, mysterious beauty Gianna. This moment
together tells the story of their past, but the night will determine their future. Starring Michael Kelly
(Adjustment Bureau).
The Drummond Will | UK | Comedy | 81 minutes | Texas Premiere | Directed by Alan Butterworth
A deeply affectionate modern retelling of the classic comedies and murder mysteries from the Ealing
era of British cinema, The Drummond Will imagines what it would be like to be stuck in a world
where the strange rules of Ealing cinema apply. A world where life continues as normal in the face of
escalating body counts, where sleepy English villages invariably harbor any number of dark secrets,
and where you only really know who the murderer is when everyone else has been killed. The
thoroughly modern Danny and Marcus are trapped in just such a world, and are quickly swept out
of their depth. They realize they’ll need to rely on each other for survival. Forensics, cell phones and
common sense won’t help them. It quickly becomes clear that nothing is what it seems.

Miskovsky (festival coordinator) will be present for a Q&A session regarding HCFF.

Cooper | USA | Drama | 90 minutes | Texas Premiere | Texas Film | Directed by Robin Nations
Notes On the Other | Spain | Documentary | 13 minutes | Texas Premiere |
Directed by Sergio Oksman
This heartwarming film is about a stray dog named Cooper who is the lone survivor of a terrible car
accident. Jake, the family patriarch, loses his wife and children in the accident. Not being a dogperson, Jake is angry and resentful toward the dog for even surviving. However, Jake eventually
bonds with Cooper and it’s this relationship that helps him find the desire to keep living after such
a tragic loss. Just as Jake gets back on his feet, he experiences a setback in the form of a missing
dog poster. Dr. Mason, the vet who helps Jake bond with Cooper, suggests that he throw away the
poster, but Jake feels compelled to do the right thing and return Cooper, thereby giving up the only
family member he has left.
HCFF Notes: Robin Nations (director) and members of the cast and crew will be in attendance for a
Q&A session following the screening.
Each summer, a crowd of Ernest Hemingway doubles meet in Florida to choose his best
impersonator. There was a day in 1924 when the real Hemingway also wanted to be someone else.

Barko is a lonely, unloved and abused dog who has established himself as the unwilling clown of
a circus run by poodles. His seemingly random fear of hot dogs is rationalized by flashbacks of a
former owner who tormented the poor pup with the processed snack. Yet, in the end, Barko finds
himself in the arms of a caring boy who shows him that he can experience a little love after all.
The Terms | UK | Drama | 12 minutes | Texas Premiere | Directed by Jason LaMotte

Sadly, this is exactly what they lose.
The Farm | USA | Drama | 13 minutes | Texas Premiere | Directed by Jon Hill
Is it greed or ignorance that makes a man lust for land? Set during the Great Depression, this riveting
drama draws parallels to today’s housing crisis — and dares you to ask the question, who is really at
fault. Starring Garrett M. Brown (I Am Number Four, Uncle Buck).
The Deadbeat | USA | Dramedy | 20 minutes | Texas Premiere | Directed by Levi Kaminkowitz
This is a dark, bizarre, original comedic short set in a mortuary. Morgan, a socially inept mortician,
is continually late to work due to traffic and is subject to his deranged boss, the mortuary owner.
A twisted and hilarious tale ensues.

Echotone | USA | Documentary | 90 minutes | Texas Film | Directed by Nathan Christ
Internationally known as “The Live Music Capital of the World,” Austin’s music culture has led it to
become one of the world’s most sought-after destinations. As nearly two dozen high-rises pop up
throughout the city amidst a post-Bush economic downfall, how does the working musician get
along? This lyrical documentary provides a telescopic view into the lives of Austin’s vibrant young
musicians as they grapple with questions of artistic integrity, commercialism, experimentation and
the future of their beloved city. Echotone is a cultural portrait of the modern American city examined
through the lyrics and lens of its creative class.

Cole is a likeable regular guy. After witnessing a gruesome murder-suicide, things haven’t been quite
right. His wife left, he’s tormented by hallucinations and his career has declined into a blue collar
job with a carpet cleaning service. Just when it seems his life has reached bottom, Cole is called
out on an all-night cleaning job at a mansion far from the city. For company he has Henry, the rich,
condescending homeowner who seems to take sadistic pleasure in letting Cole think he has just
murdered his wife. A red stain on the carpet, a knife hacking into baked rabbit, a cell phone that

overcome their own obstacles. All the money raised from Bonner’s climb goes toward the first Early
Learning Center to serve children with and without disabilities in Orange County, California.
HCFF Notes: Bonner Paddock will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.

This is definitely not your ordinary ice cream and bakery shop. Clear River,
located at 138 E. Main St. in Fredericksburg, does things just a little differently,
and you’ll be so glad they do.
In the morning, you’ll love stopping by to pick up a delicious hot-from-the-oven
baked goody and a cup of coffee from its extensive coffee bar. For lunch, you
can return for some homemade soups, sandwiches (made with fresh baked
bread) and maybe a little something sweet for dessert, like a lemon square,
pecan pie bar, cheesecake slice or brownie. Then in the afternoon, you can
return once again for homemade ice cream — more than 75 flavors, with 30
available each day. And don’t be surprised if Elvis or another fun character
serves you. Yes, Clear River does things differently, but sometimes different
is good!
Be sure to check out some of Clear River’s specialties, including: Award
winning Mexican Vanilla and Amaretto, Peach & Pecan ice cream, Praline
Dipped Pecans, Smoky Pecan BBQ Sauce, hand decorated Sugar Cookies
and Pecan Pepper Jelly.
