February — March 2009 HUNTINGTON BEACH UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees reorganization took place at the December 9, 2008 annual organization meeting. President—Bonnie Castrey Vice President—Brian Garland Clerk—Susan Henry Alternate Clerk—Matthew Harper Member—Michael Simons For the balance of the 2008-09 school year, the Board of Trustees will meet beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the District Office on the following dates: March 10, 2009 April 14, 2009 May 12, 2009 June 2, 2009 (tentative) June 23, 2009 (Adopt Budget) Spotlight On The Superintendent The Board of Trustees selected Dr. Van Riley as our Superintendent beginning July 1, 2003. Prior to that time, he served as Superintendent in Ojai Unified School District for three years and as Superintendent of Carpinteria Unified School District for six years. He has been an educator for more than 32 years. Dr. Riley provides leadership to the district by making sure that policies of the Board of Trustees are implemented, that the goals of the district’s strategic plan are met, that our schools run smoothly, and most importantly, that our students receive an outstanding education. As Dr. Riley was interviewed for this article, he was pleased to share the issues that seem to have the greatest current impact on education. He indicated that it is a huge challenge for educators to keep up with the needs of a rapidly changing society, especially in the areas of technology, information, and communications. It is imperative that students Continued on page 2 Spotlight On The Superintendent—continued develop the skills necessary to be productive citizens in a world that is constantly changing. And, of course, in these difficult economic times, it is an even greater challenge to educate our students with less and less money available. Dr. Riley is keenly aware of the need to hire only the most qualified staff – certificated and classified alike – in order to provide our students with the best high school experience possible. He said that this may be one of the hardest aspects of a superintendent’s job, and he added that every person in the district is important and appreciated. Dr. Riley and his wife Mary are both California natives. They have been married 38 years and have two children. Their son Matthew is in the wind energy business in Santa Barbara, and his wife works for Google. Their daughter Sahara earned her Ph.D. in media/ communications and is a professor at Cornell University, while her husband is a high school English teacher. If you want to see Dr. Riley smile, just ask him about his two grandchildren, Isabella and Charlotte. The only problem is that they live in New York – just a little too far away for a weekend visit! Our district is very fortunate to have Dr. Van Riley as our Superintendent. Thank you, Dr. Riley, for all your hard work as you provide outstanding leadership for our staff and students. “Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.” Japanese proverb 2 Welcome to New Classified Staff Members Marina HS District Office Whitney Allen, Instruc Aide-IB Randy Casillan, Campus Supervisor Lucas Emhof, Instruc Aide-SH Nicholas Gonzales, Campus Supervisor Nephi King, Instruc Aide-SH Dalise Lindsay, Instruc Aide-SH Kimerly Courtney-Bowman, Occup Therapist Jose Hernandez, Food Service Assist Edison HS Eric Alcala, Instruc Aide-SH Diego Artiga, Instruc Aide-SH Taylor Budnick, Instruc Aide-SH Lena Character, Instruc Aide-SE Jennifer Douglas, Instruc Aide-SH Sharon Fritz, Instruc Aide-SH Jamie Kruis, Senior Clerk Typist Mai Loan, Food Service Assist The Nguyen, Instr & Res Aide-Viet Danielle Rodriguez, Instruc Aide-SH Gwen Taniguchi, Instruc Aide-SH Eric Turner, Campus Supervisor Ocean View HS Eva Avendano, Job Developer Jose Benitez, Comm Liaison Bil-Spanish Jamie Clayton, Campus Supervisor Jessica Luzanilla, Instruc Aide-Spanish Valley Vista HS Jordin Gabriel, Child Day Care Assist Jennifer Gutierrez, Child Day Care Assist Fountain Valley HS Westminster HS Muriel Bagley, Food Service Assist Rhonda Brinkley, Food service Assist Lisa Melendez, Campus Supervisor Duc Pham, Food Service Assist Charity Byrne, Instruc Aide-SE Ashley Ring, Instruc Aide-SE Brooks Walling, Campus Supervisor Huntington Beach HS Promotions Joanne Childers, Interpreter Tutor Mary Garlington, Senior Clerk Typist Tanessa Wood, Interpreter Tutor Karen Carpenter, ASB Bookkeeper, OVHS Kaycee Cowley, Interpreter Tutor, EHS/SAC Carissa Davis, Instruc Aide-SH, FVHS Brad Ennis, Maint & Ops Mgr, MOT John Hammell, School Plant Sup, HBHS Zach Nilsson, Inst Aide/Hlth -SH, EHS/SAC Korri Rose, Accounting Tech, DO/Business Sandra Smallshaw, Intpr Trans-Span, DO/ES Patrick Stellhorn, Maint & Ops Mgr, MOT Nancy Wikes, Sr Nutrition Spec, FNS 3 ANNUAL CLASSIFIED STAFF DEVELOPMENT Over 225 classified staff members attended the 20th Annual Districtwide Classified Staff Development Day on Monday, January 26, 2009, at the Huntington Beach Central Library. Students who qualify have the right to immediate enrollment in the school closest to their current residence, or to continue attending their home school even if they move to a different attendance area. Project Outreach is based on Federal legislation called the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Expressing our Gratitude We wish to express our gratitude to the following for their generous contributions to students in our program: District employees, who have contributed individually and with numerous fund raising events, District classrooms, who have chosen to use class projects to raise contributions for Project Outreach students, the Huntington Beach Municipal Employees Association, the Kiwanis clubs of Huntington Beach/ Fountain Valley/Westminster, the National Charity League, the Assistance League, Quiksilver clothing manufacturer, Jostens, local churches, our PTSAs, and the Foundation of OVHS. A special thank you is extended to our Project Outreach community liaisons, Rebeca Adams and Elena Inurreta. Rebeca and Elena used their personal time during the Christmas holidays to make home visits and distribute some of the gift cards that the District Office staff so abundantly collected (over $1000 in gift cards!) through the District Office pre-holiday, white elephant fundraiser. What we offer students We offer whatever we can create to benefit our students, with the goals of alleviating stress, both at school and at home, and increasing focus on education. This may include assistance in obtaining school supplies, tutoring, academic guidance, food, clothing, transportation, immunizations, toiletries, health care, counseling, shelter, legal services, jobs, furniture, car smog repair, sobriety, domestic violence protection, community college scholarships, acquiring a home computer, and equal access to participation in all school activities (including grad night, cap and gown, school sports, school dances, acquiring art supplies or calculators for classes, and other school activities where a student fee involved). We network with other agencies, groups, and individuals in our community so that we can offer a cornucopia of possible solutions for our students’ needs from new shoes to root canal, all at no cost to the student or their family! How the community can help Volunteer your pro bono services in areas such as health care, legal aide, or car repair.
