Quilting Along the River - Columbia River Gorge Quilters Guild
Quilting Along the River
Columbia River Gorge Quilters’ Guild
President’s Message:
Is 2016 REALLY half way over?
It’s hard to believe that we are moving towards 2017 already. That
means our Quilt Show is just around the corner! Are you ready?
We should be seeing schoolhouse quilts, Patriotic Drunkard’s Path
quilts, some fractured flowers and of course, our Lime Challenge
quilts. Oh! Don’t forget those wonderful Mystery Quilts from the
retreat! I hear there are also several UFO’s that are done…… it is
going to be a wonderful show!
Our August meeting is going to be such a treat. I am excited to
learn more about the history of quilting in Oregon and how we can
continue adding to the legacy of our passion. There are so many
beautiful quilts in our area that need to be memorialized. My
Drunkard’s Path will become a Quilt of Valor for my son-in-law
(shhh, it’s a secret.) I hope that someday one of the great-greatgrands will look at it and wonder about who Grammy Vogel was
and how she made this wonderful quilt. All of us have such a
treasure to hand down.
Enjoy the rest of the summer – we are due for some HOT weather,
so think piecing in front of the AC. It’s cooler than sewing bindings
on!
Kim Vogel, President
Happy Sewing,

Quilt Documentations
Program:
The August Quarterly meeting will be presented by members of the
Oregon Quilt Project. The morning portion of the program will
be an explanation of what they do, how they look at a quilt for documentation, and what information is recorded. This meeting will be
somewhat of a departure for the guild on how the meeting is structured. The Project people have suggested that we do a “roundtable”
lunch format so that we can ask questions, and have a discussion
about the process. To that end, the guild is providing lunch! We
hope that the generous members will also continue to provide
munchies, so that with our sandwich plate, we can have a variety for
lunch (think cookies or chocolate.) The afternoon portion of the program will be a few actual documentations.

COLUMBIA RIVER
GORGE
QUILT SHOW
OCTOBER 21-22, 2016
HOOD RIVER ARMORY
1590 – 12th Street
Our 2016 Quilt Show is fast approaching.
You have two months to finish up your
quilts, wall hangings, table runners, bags, jackets and whatever
else you plan to show. We will be promoting our show to tourists as
part of Hood River’s annual Fruit Loop Heirloom Apple Festival.
Situated right on the Fruit Loop drive, the Armory location places
our show in perfect position to take advantage of the heightened
tourist traffic for the orchards’ and wineries’ harvest celebrations.
Our show will once again feature the very popular “Quilters’ Market” as well as vendors and quilting demonstrations.
Quilt Show Checklist for Members:
1. Mark your calendars NOW!
2. Finish all of your quilt projects for the Show by October 1,
2016 - Be sure they have a label and a 4” sleeve!
3. Bring items you are donating to the Quilters’ Market to the
August Meeting
4. Volunteer to help with the Show at the August Meeting.
5. Complete your paperwork and turn your quilts in to ETC by
Friday, October 7th.
6. Share bookmarks or coupons promoting our Show with
relatives, neighbors & friends.
7. Invite everyone you know to the Show.
Kathleen Roulet, Quilt Show Chairman
Enter and Show Your Quilts!
It's time to start thinking about the quilts you want to
hang in the quilt show. It's enlightening to receive
input from having quilts judged, but if you choose to
just display your beauties, that's great too. You
have two reasons to finish your UFO's!
Don’t forget the guild class and workshop projects
and ETC second-Saturday quilts are free to enter
unless you want them judged.
The entry deadline is Friday, October 7th, but I
would greatly appreciate the entry form paperwork
by no later than September 26 so I can get the labels made. I will also accept entries at the August
quarterly meeting.
Bring one, bring ‘em all!

2017 Retreat at

Our spring retreat is filling fast,
with less than half the available
spots remaining! The retreat is
Thursday, March 9th, through
Monday, March 13th, at Camp Cascade, near Lyons. The
cost is $258, which includes all meals and lodging, door
prizes, games, yoga, and more. To register, send a check
for at least $75 payable to CRGQG to the Guild’s post
office box, or you may register at the August meeting.

NEW BLOCK OF THE QUARTER
I hope everyone is getting their Star Power BOM/BOQ quilts finished. We’d love to hang them all together at the quilt show. Bring
your quilt (or top) to show at the August meeting.
And now, on to our next BOQ program - “Charmed, I’m Sure!”
For the next four meetings, we’ll be exchanging 5" charm squares
of batik fabrics. Then in the afternoon following our May 2017 meeting, we’ll present a series of mini-lectures and demonstrations to
give you ideas for using your charm squares, including samples of
different types of projects, and handouts with block ideas and even
some patterns!
Each quarter, there will be three different fabrics. You may choose
to exchange one, two, or all three. For each color, you will need 1/2
yard of batik fabric. Fabrics may be purchased, or may come from
your stash - note that all charm squares of a particular color do not
have to be from the same fabric.
After washing as discussed below, remove selvedges, and then
cut 24 charm squares 5" x 5". Please cut accurately. Place the
charm squares in a sandwich bag (using a separate bag for each
color), and write your name on the outside of the bag. Drop off
your bag(s) with me (Tomme) when you enter the meeting. During
the meeting, the charm squares will be sorted, and when you pick
up your bag(s) at the end of the meeting, each bag will contain 24
assorted charm squares.
THIS QUARTER’S COLORS ARE
LIGHT, MEDIUM, AND DARK BLUE.
Please wash all batiks before cutting to ensure no one has
problems with fabrics bleeding, or different amounts of shrinkage. You can test your batiks to see if they will bleed by dipping a corner
in hot water until the fabric is thoroughly soaked, and then placing it between two white paper towels. (If the fabric bleeds, you also might see the
dye in the water.) High-quality batiks, like those from Majestic Batiks, often
don’t bleed at all. (One way to identify a lower-quality batiks is how the
fabric feels. If it feels rough or gritty, don’t buy it!) If your batik doesn’t
bleed, then you can simply wash it as usual without any special product. If
it bleeds, then you must use a color fixative to “set” the color →→→
and prevent further bleeding.

Donations Needed
for Quilt Market
At the 2016 CRGQG Quilt Show
The Quilt Market at our Quilt Show has become
a very successful part of our budget the last two
years. As you organize your sewing space,
start saving the items you no longer want or
need for donation to the CRGQG Quilt Market.
The quilt market will accept anything sewing or
quilting related: Unwanted fabric (what was I
thinking?), books and patterns (seriously, did I
really think I’d make that?) are very desirable
items. We also like notions (do I really need 14
pairs of scissors???) and magazines.
Please, no “white elephant” items
not related to sewing.
New this Year:
You may bring these items to the August meeting and give them to either Gayle or Barbara so we
can start sorting and pricing. If you want to donate
between guild meetings, please contact us and we’ll
arrange drop-off or pick-up.
Consignment Items
We will also be accepting consignment items
that you have made—potholders, quilts, placemats, bed and table runners,
jackets, vests, pincushions,
etc.

The best color fixative I’ve found is a product called Synthrapol.
Wash in hot water, following the directions on the bottle. Synthrapol is
available from multiple online sources and many quilt shops. There’s a
common myth that adding white vinegar (and some say salt) to your
wash will stop colors from bleeding. Although vinegar does help set
some acid dyes, it only works during the dyeing process and not for
cotton dyes. (Note: the same company that makes Synthrapol also
makes a product called Retayne, which many people use to set the
color in commercially-dyed fabrics. Personally, I have not had as good
a result with Retayne as I have with Synthrapol. In addition, the manufacturer advises that today’s high efficiency washers do not supply
enough water in a load to use Retayne, so you have to wash by hand.
I find it easier to just use Synthrapol.)
If you have questions, please feel free to email me or give me a call.

“Beyond the Block”
Gorge Art Quilters
Our next meeting is August 15th at 2:00 at the Hood River Fire Station following the monthly Sit and Sew.
Many of our Buildings quilts will be displayed in the Architecture show at The Dalles Art Center during the month
of August. TDAC is open Tuesday through Saturday
11:00 to 5:00 and admission is always free.
We are all busy working on our next challenge - "Zipit." These quilts will be revealed in November so there is
still time for current Guild members to join Beyond the
Block and be involved in the current challenge.
Visit a meeting and check us out!
This subgroup of CRGQG meets monthly and emphasizes creativity. At each meeting we discuss artist development, use of social media, learn techniques by watching
demos by group members, share ideas and bring projects for show and tell and for constructive input from the
group. This group is open to all CRGQG members.
Please contact Kay Skov for meeting times and locations.

Call for Quilts:
September Exhibit:
Stevenson Library Community Room
Theme: A Garden of Quilts
We will once again be taking over the walls of the large
community room in the Stevenson Library in September.
The “Quilters of the Gorge” exhibit has become very popular with locals and tourists from the Skamania Lodge and
river cruise ships and is a great way to keep the public
aware of the exciting work being created in quilting today.
All forms of quilting will be on display – traditional, modern, folk, and art quilts that feature everything gardenrelated….florals, vegetables, critters, bugs, birds and butterflies. We will be displaying up to 60 quilts, any size and
shape, but no longer than 60”. Please bring your quilts to
the August Guild Meeting, or you can drop them off at
ETC by Thursday, August 25. Paperwork will be available
at both places. There is no charge to show your quilt.

PLEASE HELP. Our guild needs you to ask the business people you associ-
ate with for donations to our quilt show prize money fund. One reason we
have such a terrific show is due to our prizes. Ideas: beautician, lawyer,
doctor, CPA, car dealer, repair shop, butcher, baker, candlestick maker . . . .
They are recognized and credited for their contribution at our show. We
accept any amount but encourage $50, $100, $200 or $500 donations.

July 6 – August 5, 2016
Stevenson Library Community Room
Stevenson Library, 120 NW Vancouver Avenue, Stevenson
In 2009 and again in 2012, several members of the Columbia River Gorge
Quilters Guild toured Guatemala, a country known for riotous color and traditional, regional costumes of hand-woven fabric embellished with dazzling embroidery.
This exhibit presents the colorful quilts and other items our members created
from the hand-woven textiles acquired at shops and open air markets across
the country. The exhibit also displays exquisite, hand-woven and embroidered clothing items, as
well as watercolor paintings by Gayle Weisfield
and guild member Nona
Scheurer. If you missed
this exhibit in May-June at
the Latimer Quilt and Textile Center in Tillamook,
this could be your last
chance to see this amazing, colorful collection.
