POWER
How Shimano improved the Stella SW
The new STELLA SW focuses on absolute
power. To achieve it, ‘toughness’, ‘cranking
power’, ‘rigidity’, ‘water resistance’ and
‘drag’ performances have been improved.
The core technologies are X-SHIP, which
enhances power transmission efficiency
through the gear, plus POWER ALUMINIUM
BODY, X-RIGID ROTOR, X-RIGID BAIL and
X-RIGID HANDLE to improve rigidity and
eliminate loss of power caused by flexing.
Synergy generated by all these technologies
combine to prevent loss of power input in the
handle and creates enormous cranking power.
In order to support this tremendous power,
extreme toughness from X-RIGID GEAR is
introduced at the heart of the reel’s body.

X-TOUGH DRAG, with its dramatically
enhanced heat resistance and
toughness, anticipates the blazing speed of bluefin tuna and giant trevally. Drag performance
has been made even smoother, further assuring its reliability. In addition to these epochmaking mechanisms, focus is also placed on water resistance, in order to maintain their initial
performance and toughness. The dependable X-SHIELD system has been applied throughout,
and X-PROTECT provided at the roller clutch assembly - a crucial area for water resistance.
The new STELLA SW wins fierce battles through high-level integration of ‘power’ and ‘smoothness’.

X-SHIP internal structure ( CAD image)
The X-SHIP gear system achieves greater power transmission
efficiency by minimizing the rotational resistance through a
larger gear, optimum positioning and improved tooth face
accuracy and bearing capacity. The rigidity of components
such as the handle rotor and bail are enhanced to eliminate
power loss resulting from flexing and distortion.
The synergy generated by X-SHIP and rigidity of components
allows more direct cranking without loss of power at
the handle, providing great advantages for extreme
saltwater fishing. Further, smooth and powerful cranking
performance created by the high inertia X-RIGID ROTOR
and X-SHIP together is the pivotal feature of STELLA.
Ultimate toughness was sought for the main gear to withstand
the maximum drag needed when tackling offshore pursuits. The
difference is obvious; the new main gear is thicker and stronger.
With its additional special surface coating, a maximum of 38%
greater durability is achieved over past STELLA reels. This is a super
tough gear suitable for the heart of the new STELLA SW,
designed for perfection in the most extreme situations.

X-SHIELD &
X-PROTECT
— double water
resistant in
extreme conditions
Saltwater fishing can be extremely severe
with waves surging over the gunwale and
raging oceans attacking the reel. The
internal structure of spinning reels, which
overcomes such rough conditions, is by
contrast an ultra precision machine.
Saltwater intrusion into the inside of a reel
can cause serious performance problems.
Therefore it is imperative to enhance water
resistance without impairing the properties of
spinning reels designed for saltwater fishing.
These double water resistant structures;
X-SHIELD and X-PROTECT satisfy such
requirements by resisting saltwater ingress
into the working parts of the Stella SW.

Powerful sealing structure throughout
By providing dependable sealing structures and
gaskets at necessary points, including the reel
body and lid joint and the contact point of the
spool and drag knob, possible water ingress is
blocked. This double protection provides high
reliability and durability to the STELLA SW
when used in extreme saltwater conditions.
Triple-lips and special grease for protection
The contact type triple-lip structure is introduced
to the roller clutch, the pivotal point concerning
water resistance. In this structure, the first lip
prevents water from entering through the space
between the rotor and the body. In addition,
the special grease between the second and
third lip - where it makes contact with the rotor
collar located at the upper part of the roller
clutch - not only resists water from entering
but also minimizes friction resistance. Without
jeopardizing the ‘silky smooth rotation capacity’,
the vital feature of STELLA SW, exceptional water
resistance, has been achieved to withstand the
crashing and splashing of waves and spray.

A large diameter base for models 8000 and above
1
Large sized models 8000 and above have a spool base consisting
of large diameter metal and carbon washer layers. This large
diameter structure makes it possible to fully bear the load
generated by tightening the drag knob from the top and bottom,
drastically reducing load per unit area. This X-TOUGH DRAG
dedicated to large size models provides even higher stability.
2 Drag curve comparison (#20000)
The coiled wave spring adopted for the drag system features steady
compression level elasticity and little deformation after repeated
use. It assures consistent drag level tuning from the minimum to
maximum setting, even at near maximum drag level. This is a great
advantage under extreme conditions when hooked-up to a monster
sized fish. This provides anglers with a more flexible drag adjustment
strategy and overcomes the problem of a small knob turning under
a heavy drag load, producing a sudden and big change in the drag.
Single performance is not
enough for the ultimate
drag system
The drag system of the new STELLA SW has advanced enormously
in terms of toughness, smoothness and performance. The basic
drag performance has been extensively reviewed and each of the
metal and carbon drag washers show excellent heat resistance
and durability. Through an in-depth study of the thickness and
frictional force of each component within the drag system, the best
combinations for optimum performance parameters have been
found for each model and size. Further, the structure supporting
the middle surface of the spool, from both the top and bottom,
efficiently disperses the load, securing a smooth and stable drag
force. Inside the drag knob, a coiled wave spring is mounted to allow
anglers to make fine adjustment, even when under a heavy load.

Abrasion tests on the carbon washers of the old 08 STELLA SW and
the new STELLA SW under the same load, reveal the former became
thinner with the surface becoming slightly rough, while the latter
increased their surface lustre and showed no wear.
As heat resistance and durability have also been improved, the
line drag test at maximum drag (drag stability comparison chart)
shows smooth line release without excessive wobbling.

Powerful protection
through high rigidity
The new STELLA SW introduces high rigidity
aluminium for its body material. This housing
material emphasizes the STELLA SW concept
to protect the reel’s interior from the extreme
saltwater environment, creating a body with
excellent toughness. This feature provides
tremendous certainty in challenging saltwater
fishing conditions, enabling anglers to
focus on their big prey with confidence.

The focus is not only
on toughness, but
also on the effect of
rotary inertia
Considering the harsh environment of
saltwater fishing, aluminium was selected
for the rotor material because of its
excellent durability, rigidity and corrosion
resistance. Thorough attention was given
to the thickness of every detail to create
a strong rotor with assured toughness.
While protecting the reel’s main body
against impact during fishing and
transportation, the rotor brings out
the potential of all features such as X
Tough Drag. The rotary inertia typical of
aluminium generates the powerful and
smooth performance of the new STELLA
SW and effortlessly supports fishing with
heavy load lures or while deep sea jigging.

The use of thicker titanium wire dramatically increased
the rigidity and impact resistance of the bail arm.
The nature of the metal makes the bail lighter
and provides excellent corrosion resistance.
A super-reliable bail system has been created by combining
a one-piece bail wire, an SW barrier coat big roller
reinforced with Diamond Like Carbon (DLC), and a highstrength hard coated arm cam.
The most rigid rotary assembly ever has been
realised through synergy with X-RIGID ROTOR.

In the new STELLA SW, the handle shaft is now integrated with a one-piece
collar. This all-in-one structure enhances rigidity of the shaft casing, while
in addition a new configuration is adopted for the mating surface with the
handle shank. This allows the shaft casing to thoroughly and accurately
encase the top of the handle shank, thereby increasing the rigidity of the
entire handle. For 5000 size reels and larger, primarily used for power
fishing, a cold-forged handle shank is used to prevent flexing and distortion
while preventing internal torsion. With these new features, handle rigidity
tests show a 35% increase in rigidity. Even under high load, the energy
applied by an angler can be directly transmitted to cranking power.

Longer, more
accurate casts, time
and time again
Through tens of thousands of casting tests and computer
simulations the AR-C spool lip has been designed to
provide longer casting distances than a standard spool
lip, while at the same time preventing backlash and wind
knots from forming. This is achieved by allowing the
line to flow off of the spool in a number of smaller loops,
rather than a single larger loop which creates drag on
the line. The reduced friction means longer casts.

stainless steel ball
bearings
A-RB bearings are stainless steel ball
bearings that have been through the A-RB
treatment process which makes them at
least 10 times more corrosion resistant than
standard stainless steel ball bearings.
Easy Maintenance
No shield design allows for easy flushing
of debris and easy lubrication.
Increased Bearing Speed
No shield design and lighter
viscosity lubrication reduce
friction and allow the
