FAMILY HAWAI‘I 7
The Hawaiian Islands Cruising
CRUISE APPEAL
Cruising is the perfect option if you’re travelling with children or extended family
groups — delivering up to four contrasting Hawaiian island experiences from the
convenience of one floating resort.
CRUISE HAWAI‘I MEANS:
no unpacking and re-packing as your family tours the islands
meals are included in the all-inclusive price
kids’ and teens’ clubs on-board keep the younger members
of the family occupied between ports of call
you can be as busy or relaxed as you choose
great vantage points for whale-watching (December-April)
and viewing the more inaccessible scenic highlights such
as the dramatic Nāpali Coast of Kaua‘i.
One cruise ship, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America,
is located in Hawai‘i year-round. Others visit for part of the year.
Specialty, short-duration cruises also operate offering a
particular focus such as whale-watching.
A range of itineraries is available. The Pride of America, for example,
offers a seven-night inter-Hawaiian-island itinerary departing
Honolulu on O‘ahu every Saturday and cruising to Maui, Hawai‘i
Island and Kaua‘i where the ship spends two full days in port
on each island.
One huge advantage of cruise is that it is so easy to keep
all members of the family entertained, inspired and busy.
In fact, cruise companies are experts at putting together
programs that cater for varied ages, interests, abilities
and fitness levels. And, when it comes to young travellers,
there are so many options that allow children to have fun
and independence away from mum and dad, but in a safe,
supervised environment.
Pride of America runs three kids’ clubs and a
teens’ program:
‘Turtles’ (three-five years);
‘Seals’ (six-nine years);
‘Dolphins’ (10-12 years);
‘Entourage’ (13-17 years).
In addition, a toddlers’ program, ‘Guppies’, is available
for teeny travellers from six months of age up to two
years who are accompanied by a parent or carer.
The programs for each club are very carefully crafted
to maximise appeal to the target age group and the
generous opening hours allow parents to take in some
of the fabulous evening shows or enjoy a leisurely dinner.
Images courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line
Families can choose to stay on board or disembark and explore
each island. It is easy to organise tours, car hire and tickets to
major attractions before you depart Australia. However, if you
prefer to sit back and have all the work done for you, simply visit
the ship’s tours desk for advice and to book a wide range of
activities that suit family members of all ages.

GETTING AROUND THE
ISLANDS… IT’S SO EASY!
On O‘ahu use ‘TheBus’ (thebus.org)
and Waikiki Trolley (waikikitrolley.com)
— they’re easy, fun and affordable
ways to see Waikīkī and Honolulu.
On neighbouring islands, a hire
car and tours are recommended.
A ferry operates daily to/from Lāhainā
(Maui) to Moloka‘i (90 minute trip) and
Lāna‘i (60 minute trip) — a perfect day trip!
Helicopter tours are a great way to see
the particularly scenic spots such as
Waimea Canyon (Kaua‘i) and inaccessible
areas such as the Nāpali Coast (Kaua‘i).
Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles
are available for hire.

R

axis are available at airports and
T
key tourist spots. Credit cards are

International Airport to Waikīkī.
In key tourist spots, shuttles operate
between airports and hotels/resorts,
and between resorts and nearby
shopping precincts. Some are free
of charge and others incur a small fee.

DORMANT VOLCANO
This is a must-see! Take a day trip (via
hire car or tour company) to Maui’s
highest peak, Haleakalā Crater, towering
some 348 metres above sea level. Each
day at the summit naturalists give talks
above the 4.8 km by 11.2 km volcanic
crater and on most weekdays they also
lead 2.5 km to 4.8 km hikes. One hike
heads down into the crater itself while
the other ventures into the rainforest.
Children (five to 12 years) can enjoy
the park’s Junior Ranger program of
activities centred around the fragile
ecosystem of this unique area, and
physically-active families can make
a full day of hiking in and out of the
914-metre-deep crater (or take a
horseback trip). Cabins and camping
grounds are available in the crater for
overnight stays. Biking trips are also
on offer via selected tour companies.

HIKING SAFETY
Hawai‘i is the perfect destination for hiking but some
trails are for experienced hikers only. Make sure you
do your research (degree of difficulty and length),
let people know where you’re going, carry a mobile
phone and water, and always hike with a partner.

Lāna‘i Airport (LNY) 25 min
Hilo International Airport (ITO) Hawai‘i Island 50 min
Kona International Airport (KOA) Hawai‘i Island 45 min
Note that a service charge may be automatically
added to a bill, especially for party sizes of six or more.
Check your bill before tipping to see if a service charge
has already been included.
Cruising – a small gratuity is built into the cost of your
cruise (this is generally split between various service
departments onboard such as housekeeping and food/
beverage). At your discretion you may still like to leave a
tip for extra special service received from housekeepers,
waiters, bar staff and others.
GENERAL SAFETY TIPS
Be as security-conscious as you would be at home.
Don’t leave valuables unattended or in plain sight in a
hire car, on the beach, or in restaurants or lobbies (lock
them in the hotel/room safe). Take only essential items
to the beach and put keys/valuables in a waterproof bag
and keep them with you. Carry little cash and leave extra
cash/credit cards in the hotel safe. Make use of travellers’
cheques, ATM facilities and/or credit cards.
