Spring, Winter, Spring again?? What’s the verdict? Don’t get me wrong. I am not complaining, merely
pointing out the obvious. Where else in the world can you snowshoe in your yard one day and go for
a pleasant spring ride the next? We really do have wonderful weather in the panhandle of Texas.
This moisture is going to translate to some really nice spring lawns and flower beds.
And how better to test your riding and decision-making skills than to plan a trip to Phoenix via I-40 in
the middle of March. And that is just what some brave souls from Arkansas H did. And some of us
were foolish/bored enough to tag along. The Forty2Phoenix Ride was the brainchild of one Greg
McKinney. He noticed that fewer than 5% of all GWRRA members had ever been to the National
Headquarters for a visit. What a shame! Well, he decided to resolve that by planning a group ride
from coast to coast with a stop in Phoenix to visit Melissa and the gang. So he gathered up some
participants and headed for the East coast, then turned around and headed back west. As they
neared Amarillo, Wayne went out to Oklahoma to meet them and show them the way to the Big
Texan Steak Ranch. Then a few more of us went out and met these forward thinkers. I, along with Bill
and Betty, feeling the pride of Chapter Couple of the Year, decided we would tag along to Phoenix
just to make sure they didn’t cause/get into any trouble. Turns out one group of riders, led by Greg
and Tina, were looking for just that as they decided to continue West on I-40 into the teeth of a
winter storm. The rest of “us” decided a more southerly route was in our best interests and headed
for Portales. Well in the end we all made it to Phoenix and had a GREAT time. Bill and Betty had so
much fun they decided to go on to San Diego. Alas, I headed for home to make a meeting I had later
in the week. I really enjoyed the ride back home and the warmth of the sun that day. I explored
some back roads in Arizona and NM I had not seen before and made it home a little after dark.
Everyone keep your eyes and ears peeled as there is a lot happening in the Top Wings right now.
Terry is planning a trip to Big Bend for next month. Rafael is starting to plan a Rally to support the
purchase of a patient lift for the Veterans Home. Friday night rides will start on April 9th. We are
lining up guest speakers for the monthly meetings. And the media blitz will soon begin in support of
the Mall Show and Motorcycle Awareness Month in May. Thank You Bob!! Momentum is continuing
on the Chapter basket. Thanks John!
A big “Thank You!” to the staff and participants, who are always helping me to remember that this is
Fun!

Educator’s Corner
Just think of the chaos if we didn’t have these laws. Respect them.
Licensing Requirements
These vary from state to state. Most states require a separate license in order to operate a
motorcycle. Go and get one. Drop by your local department
of motor vehicles and ask for licensing information. You put yourself,
your wallet, and your insurance at risk if you choose to violate the law.
If your state requests it, take the written test. And the riding test. Get your motorcycle operator’s
license. Become a full-fledged member of the motorcycling fraternity. Some states will waive the
riding and/or written test if you complete the Basic RiderCourse.
Insurance
The registration is easy; pay your money, and you get a license plate to bolt onto the back of the
bike.
Insurance is harder, but most states require liability insurance. (Check your state’s laws.) Shop
around for it. Some companies give a discount if you’ve taken an MSF RiderCourse.
You can also get other coverage on you and your bike: comprehensive, collision, medical
payments, uninsured driver (the other guy), and more. Ask your insurance agent what each type
of coverage can do for you, and how much it will cost.
The better your driving record, the less costly the insurance. It pays to be safe.

A Note From the Couple of the Year
Thanks Dan Walker, Randy and Laura Small and David and Connie Hirsh for representing Top Wings at the 28th Annual Muleshoe Rally March 20, 2010. Congratulations to these five fun-lovers for claiming the Largest Club Honor for Top Wings. We
tried to make it on our return trip from San Diego, CA but the snow in the mountains
made us a day late. We want to thank everyone for helping with the basket. David and
Rob are doing a great job on building the basket. Suzanne has had some terrific ideas
and has helped name the theme as Top of Texas Treasures as well as approaching The
Big Texan for donations. John made a generous cash donation and suggested we buy a
battery tender and gift cards. Jerry and Teresa promise two pair of new riding gloves
and Lana is working on a glitzy jewelry gift. All members are encouraged to donate
items or money to purchase items for the basket by May 1. Thanks, Betty and Bill Hisey
