RUSTY
We are calling all DOGS!
Now this is what I call a
fur-real fun raiser – my
very own pool party! Last year I was only
allowed to bring my friend, Tucker (the Red
Baron) to our HSPC MAIN EVENT. This party,
Rusty
it’s all about me and my canine friends of
course. That’s right – Rusty’s Pool Party. Did you notice no cats allowed? Now that’s
something to howl about. Sorry Felix and Belle; don’t get me wrong. I like cats,
I really do … just the same way I like squirrels, out of my garden. Sorry to be so
“ruff” on you but can you imagine cats at a pool party? No thanks! I can hardly wait
for the “Itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini contest. I’m usually such a
well mannered gentleman but, who knows, there could be some drooling going
on after that. Don’t be afraid to put on your swimwear friends; I wore some board
shorts, cool shades and a hat in my photo shoot. Yeah, I have yet another title:
Super Model!!! When Abercrombie sees these shots, I’m outta here!
SAYS:
Back to reality, folks; as if the bathing suit contest weren’t enough
fun for me, they came up with the chicken
flavored snow cones to make me happy
both inside and out. Now I know some
of you aren’t very good swimmers,
but you shouldn’t let that stop you
from enjoying a day out of the old
backyard to make new friends and
lay out by the pool. So grab your
towels, practice your howls, fetch your
toys and help us raise the roof of the
new building!
Love, Rusty

Cypress Gardens Splash Island facilities for the swimming event on October 4, 2008.
I understand that the act of unleashing my dog(s) and being physically present inside the

and to other dogs. I understand these risks are entirely my responsibility. I expressly assume
these risks. I am aware of the risks and hazards inherent upon entering the Splash Island facilities
and I choose to voluntarily enter the premises, knowing the conditions might become more
hazardous and/or dangerous for myself and/or dog(s), and I voluntarily assume all such risks,
loss, damages or injury that may be sustained by entering the Splash Island facilities.
By signing this release of liability and using the Splash Island facilities, I hereby fully and forever
release and discharge the Humane Society of Polk County, Cypress Gardens and their volunteers,

FELIX SAYS: Now This Time
He’s Gone Too Far!
I almost refused to write this article
for Pause for Paws, so offended was
I at Rusty’s tone and snarly statements
in his column, such as: “I like cats … the
same way I like squirrels, out of my garden.”
NEWS FLASH …… I don’t like DOGS in my garden
either! Oh, well, consider the source. Will I let an empty-headed,
yappy, squirrel-chasing, cat-hating, indoor-messer, smelly stressor,
conceited, self-centered DOG who speaks with a BLACK-SPOTTED
TONGUE upset me? Absolutely not!
But to clarify a few points:
1. No cat would be caught
dead modeling a bikini.
Well, only one.
2. Chicken flavored snow
cones sound promising
3. How about a cats-only
wading pool party? We
could lounge around the
pool, soaking up some
Page 6
rays. We’d fish for leaves in the pool; eat snacks of tuna fish and
chicken livers, with catnip favors for all! Sounds like a plan to me.
4. We are an animal shelter – not a DOGS ONLY shelter. We cats
have our own area. Look at these beauties; they’d all like to be
adopted into forever homes, and how could anyone resist?
Despite what some might think, there is no bias against cats at
the Humane Society of Polk County. We’re an equal-rights
shelter – cats, dogs, along with infrequent rescued large animals
and exotic species.
Please check out the fabulous architect’s drawing of our future
shelter (page 10). Personally I liked my version in our Spring
newsletter better (below), but that’s progress for you.
So long for now! I hope you all come to Rusty’s pool party; I’ll
see you there if I can crash it just to spite Rusty!
Talk to you later.
Love, Felix

“SNIP” Information
Dr. Yoder
SNIP – Spay Neuter Inoculation
Program is a no-cost sterilization
program to assist low-income families
with vaccinations and spaying and
neutering their pets. This program
Dr. Rayburn
would not be possible without the
help and generosity of our local
veterinarians. Dr. Mattson, Dr. Vargas and Dr.
Yoder have done all of our surgeries, and they
are true champions to the Humane Society. If
you are in need of assistance with spaying and
neutering your pet you may qualify for our SNIP
program. For more detailed information visit our
Web site or call the shelter at 863-324-5227.
Dr. Mattson
We also provide a low-cost spay and neuter voucher program to those who do
not qualify for SNIP. The program works this way. You purchase a voucher at the
Humane Society to have your pet fixed at one of our participating veterinarians.
Then you call that vet and set up your appointment. Vouchers for cats are $40 and
dogs are $60. The voucher covers the surgery only for your pet. You will need to
take verification of shots – rabies and first vaccine – to the vet the day of the surgery,
Dr. Vargas during surgery
or the participating veterinarian can administer those shots for an additional fee.
We have been very fortunate
to have several veterinarians
in our community partner
with us in this program. We
would like to thank them for
their continued support:

NEW SHELTER UPDATE
The Humane Society of Polk County (HSPC) is a “no-kill”
animal welfare organization, the first in Polk County. We
have been working for the community for 35 years. We are
a strong community resource and partner advocating the
humane treatment of animals and responsible ownership of
pets. We strive to:
n shelter and protect animals by placing
them into caring, responsible environments;
n increase awareness through humane

We are currently operating out of our Sage Road facility in
Winter Haven, but…
Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, the
Humane Society owns five acres of land next to Ridge
Community Center on Hwy. 544. We have the architectural
plans for the new building
from Ed Pilkington; Envisors
is currently providing
our engineering and site
development work. We hope
to have all the bidding for
this project completed by
Thanksgiving – giving us all
something to be thankful for.
Unfortunately, we do not yet have all
of the funding needed to complete the
building phase of the shelter, so we are
asking people to help us get it done. The
Humane Society of Polk County hopes to
raise the balance through special events like
Rusty’s Pool Party and the Winter Haven
Cycling Classic as well as sponsorships to
areas within the new shelter. Sponsorship
of an area within the shelter is a great way
for people to honor or remember people
or pets that are important to them. Each
area of the shelter that receives a sponsor
will display a permanent plaque containing
the name of the sponsor as well as the
name or names of people or pets they would
like to honor or remember. This is a great
opportunity for people to leave a lasting
legacy while creating a permanent tribute to
those who have contributed most to your life.
Sponsorship levels begin with gift bricks for
a donation of $100 each. Plagues within the
shelter will begin at $500.

while honoring an important person or pet

Girl Scout Troop Make “Happy Socks”
I am a Girl Scout in Junior Troup 74 from Grace
Lutheran School. Our troop decided to make
Happy Socks and bring them to the Humane
Society. A Happy Sock is an old sock filled with
fluff and a little bit of catnip. We give them to
the cats to play with until they get adopted.
When we came to the Humane Society, we met
Executive Director Lisa Baker. She showed us
around the building. I learned that more than
20,000 pets are put down each year because
people aren’t spaying and neutering the animals
they bring home. I thought that was really
sad. We also learned that if you decide you’re
getting an animal, you have to ask yourself if
you can take care of that animal for up to 20
years. Lastly, she explained what the Humane
Society does. They take in animals and take care
of them until they are adopted. They wash, feed
and play with them.
As we were about to move on, a question came
up. The question was, “If there are stray animals
Chain of Lakes
Cycling Classic
Mark your calendar and don’t miss the
upcoming 2009 Chain of Lakes Cycling Classic,
benefiting the Humane Society of Polk County’s
fund for our new building. This USCF-sanctioned
event will include time trials, a road race and a
Criterium (street circuit race) – guaranteed to
be challenging and rewarding to the cycling
competitors, exciting to the spectators and
benefit a great cause. The Criterium segment
of the event will be particularly thrilling due to
the challenging .6-mile course with eight turns
around and through Central Park in Winter
Haven. The course set-up affords outstanding
spectator viewing.
n Time Trials – Fri., April 17, 2009 –
Fire Tower Road, Haines City
n Road Race – Sat., April 18, 2009 –
Lake Buffum Area, Alturas
n Criterium – Sun., April 19, 2009 –
Central Park, Downtown Winter Haven
Next on the trip we went to look at the cats. They were so
adorable! We stayed with the cats for a while. We took
some of them out of the cages and stared at them.
After that, we went out to the dogs to pet them for a
while. Then we got to go outside and pet one of them.
He was so cute! We stayed there petting, playing and
taking pictures with the dog until closing time. While
we were with the dog, Lisa mentioned one more
thing. She said that when you turn 13, you could
volunteer at the shelter and help out with caring
for the animals. You get to change the litter boxes,
bathe the dogs or whatever
they tell you to do. I said
that I was definitely going to
work there.
Overall, I would say that
the trip was awesome!! I
learned a ton and had fun
with the animals. We also
had an awesome tour guide
to lead us around. This was
the best trip ever!

around the neighborhood, would you
recommend feeding them?” The answer
was no. If you feed them, they will tell
their friends, and they will start coming to
eat also. If the person feeding them dies,
moves or is on vacation, all of the cats
will be hanging around waiting for food.
Don’t feed wild animals. I know you are trying to save or help them, but don’t
feed them. If you do find a wild cat, you can catch it and
bring it in, and they will be spayed or neutered.

The Fowler
Family with
Breeze
formerly known
as Ashley –
she now weighs
30 pounds!
of Polk County
– Diane Fowler
Just a note to let you know how happy we are we adopted Ashley
(now Breeze). We wanted this dog to share our love of sailing
(unlike our last one). We named her Breeze because “every sailboat needs a breeze.” She has now spent nine nights aboard Windy
City, our 36’ Catalina. She doesn’t shed much,
LOVES the boat, is well behaved and SO CUTE! Everyone on the dock is in love with her. This
morning, I awoke at 6:30 a.m. on Captiva Island
and took her for her first beach walk. The pure
JOY in her face was priceless – running in the
sand, digging up nothing, chasing birds and
picking up sea shells and throwing them in the
air. We think the donation we made to your
organization was a BARGAIN! Thanks again
for bringing so much love to our lives.

Hello to the wonderful staff who
took good care of us (Angie and
Poogie Peterson) while we were in
your care. We were adopted one
year ago. We have the “Life of
Riley” now. We are very spoiled
and pampered little girls. Mommy
and Daddy are very
glad they found
us at your shelter;
they say we are
