MnPAW believes that by joining forces to use its
ideas, expertise and resources in a coordinated
way it can make a greater impact on reducing
euthanasia of adoptable animals.
MnPAW is focused on reducing the numbers of
animals coming into shelters, animal control and
rescues. In addition, it hopes to increase the
share of animals that are being adopted from
animal control, shelters and rescues as compared
to other sources. To achieve this, initiatives will
focus on spay/neuter, adoption partnerships,
education and advocacy.
This conference has been approved for 3 CE hours
for Veterinarians (and Technicians) licensed in
Minnesota.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4
8:30 - 9:15 Registration
9:1O Opening comments – Betsy Bode
This year features another fine line up. As per requests from last year’s
evaluations, the focus of this year’s conference relates to cat and dog behavior, socialization,
enrichment, and adoption, for use with shelters, animal control, and the entire animal welfare
community.
9:30 - 10:45 Cat Socialization, Enrichment and Assessment- Part 1
Speaker – Sherry Woodard, APDT, CPDT-KA
The socialization process, dubbed Miss Sherry’s Finishing School for Felines, you’re about to learn
was born out of necessity. There were around 800 cats at the Great Kitty Rescue and Best Friends
staff were determined to socialize as many of them as possible, so the kitties could get rid of their
fear, become house cats and find forever homes. Based on their trial-and-error experiences with
the cats of the Great Kitty Rescue, Best Friends staff and volunteers used a series of steps for
socializing extremely shy or fearful cats, everyday enrichment and how to asses for fast adoptions.
10:45 - 11:00 Break
11:00 - 12:15 Cat Socialization, Enrichment, and Assessment - Part 2
Speaker – Sherry Woodard, APDT, CPDT-KA
12:15 - 1:15 Lunch
1:25 - 2:45 Solutions for Addressing Common Challenges for Shelter and Rescue Dogs
Speaker: Sherry Woodard, APDT, CPDT-KA
Come learn more about ways to reduce and prevent undesirable behaviors of dogs in shelters,
impounds or foster homes and increase their chances of getting adopted. Sherry, animal behavior
consultant, will offer solutions to address challenges in dogs such as jumping/mouthy behavior, fear
and anxiety, resource guarding, and reactivity. Other topics she will cover include the importance
of body language (dogs and human), enrichment, clicker training and how to increase desired
behaviors.
2:45 - 3:00 Break
3:00 - 4:00 Common Challenges for Shelter and Rescue Dogs - Part 2
Speaker: Sherry Woodard, APDT, CPDT-KA
4:00 - 4:30 Round Table – Vicki Davis
Bring your questions to the conference or send them in ahead of time. This is the time to ask
your colleagues how they’ve solved a particular challenge you’re currently facing. Questions can
range from ‘what’s the best product to use for cat urine?’ -- to ‘how did you get your board
more involved in fundraising?’ Questions can be emailed to [email protected] or turned in to
Vicki the day of the conference.
herry Woodard, Best Friends Animal Society’s resident
animal behavior consultant, is an expert in animal training,
behavior and care, she develops resources, provides
consulting services, leads workshops and speaks nationwide to
promote animal welfare.
S
Before coming to Best Friends, Sherry, a nationally certified
professional dog trainer, worked with dogs, cats, horses and a
variety of other animals. She also worked in veterinary clinics,
where she gained valuable experience in companion-animal
medical care and dog dentistry.
Sherry came to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in 1996 as a dog caretaker. Her understanding
of animals and insights into their behavior were quickly recognized and, in 1997, she was asked
to manage Dogtown, where she oversaw the daily care and medical needs of 600 dogs.
She created the ABC’s of Dogs, Best Friends’ guide for care and training of dogs. Sherry has
been certified by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT) as a certified
professional dog trainer – knowledge assessed (CPDT-KA). In March 2008, Sherry’s Dog
Behavior and Handling Workshop was approved for continuing education credit by CPDT.
In 2007, Sherry spent six months working with Best Friends’ Great Kitty Rescue in Pahrump,
Nevada, where 800 cats were discovered living in horrible conditions. To prepare these
traumatized kitties for new lives as
house cats, she and several colleagues
developed a process for socializing
fearful cats. As a result, hundreds of
cats from the Pahrump compound
were adopted into good homes. She
co-authored “Best Friends’ Guide to
Socializing Shy and Fearful Cats” from
this experience
Sherry has presented at “No More
Homeless Pets” conferences about dog
and cat behavior, along with Jackson
Galaxy of Animal Planet and Lisa
Waggoner of Cold Nose College. She
conducts workshops across the country
and appeared on National Geographic
Channel regarding body language, dog
training, daily care, behavior assessment,
enrichment, and creating behavior
change using rewards.
