This volume established O’Connor’s contribution to American fiction. She presents Southern people at their best and worst. She has the gift to describe people, surroundings, and life with astonishing spare prose. There are 31 stories in all. In story after story, she brings her characters to a moment when it is no longer possible for them to continue in their accustomed manner. July - The Immigrants by Howard Fast. Fast paints a picture of what immigrants faced when they came to “the land of plenty.” Some struggled and others worked and worked and succeeded and all created a great America. Set in San Francisco in the late 1880s to the 1930’s, like Gone With the Wind, it has it all: romance, the stock market crash, WWI, intrigue, the poor becoming rich and the rich becoming poor, wheeling and dealing. August – A Lady and Her Man by Miller Taylor. This is a story about a failed high school romance. Loretta and Herschel seem destined for each other but can’t seem to get it together. It is a romantic odyssey that stands black culture on its head. Loretta Payne dreams but prays too. Beyond her dreams she insists that people around her do the right thing. Her high school sweetheart (Herschel Gates) has to learn that there is more to life than shirt-chasing and hustling. The author weaves a rich story told through the life of a young woman whose integrity can’t be eaten away even by cancer. Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center: Movies Catch a Movie with Us!
