Increase Accessibility to Arts Education
The Multnomah Arts Center Association is working hard to
increase accessibility to need-based scholarships and provide
new outreach efforts throughout Portland. Your donation will
help support these efforts. MACA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3)

First Friday is always a great time in
Multnomah Village, but this May 2,
two great events are going to be worth
checking out. The MAC Youth Arts
Show from 5-7pm will be a great family
event (pages 3 & 20). Then for the
grown-ups we are having a storytelling event Truth Be Told
(page 21). We hope you’ll join us!
Thanks to grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council
and the Oregon Arts Commission, we are developing final
design and business plans for the Arts Cottages. This summer
we’ll begin developing MAC’s woodworking cottage with
support from four local woodworking/turning/carving groups.
And we’ve welcomed Print Arts Northwest as our newest
tenant. More to come in the fall!

Family Classes
Family classes are designed for parents, guardians and children to interact and participate together. Our philosophy is to
honor the child’s creative impulses—focusing on process, rather than product. Visual art classes provide instruction in the use
of art materials and techniques, encouraging each child’s individual style of visual expression. We recommend both adult and child
wear grubbies as these classes can be messy. All materials are included. Clean-up is part of all MAC Youth Art classes.

Visual Art Classes for Youth
Most materials are included in the children’s art classes. Unless otherwise stated, parents and guardians are not to attend class but
should stay in the building until their child is comfortable. Please have children dress for mess and be ready for a good time!
Clay students please read the “Youth Clay Studio Policy” available on our website. Clay work must be picked up during your class time
or during open clay studio times only. Please allow 10 days from the last class to pick up your child’s work. This allows for firing time.
After 3 weeks from the last class, the work will be recycled (due to limited storage space).

basket has a story to tell. Enjoy the
process as well as the finished project.
This multi-age workshop will be
divided into two very different types
of basketmaking. First, complete
a round reed twined basket with a
handle—perfect for spring. Individual
basket styles will depend on age and
skill level. Learn weaving, shaping and
pattern development. Choose from 10
colors of round reed and a wide variety
of accent weaving materials and beads
for truly unique designs. Next, handle
several types of Japanese gift baskets,
and make a simple flower holder with
a small bamboo insert vase holding

many ways you can bend and play
with wire to create jewelry pieces or
sculpture. Create words and images,

together to make jewelry and small
sculptural pieces. Hammer the metal
to harden and stretch it, and learn
simple wrapping techniques to attach
multiple pieces together. We work
entirely cold- no torch required. No
prerequisite. Price includes all materials.

Multnomah Arts Center Trayle Print Studio offers classes and workshops for serious students and hobbyists alike.
The 1000 square foot studio is bathed in light with south and north facing windows, 15' ceilings, overlooking a garden.
We use green materials when possible such as Simple Green, vinegar and water, oil and soap. Class fees cover most supplies
needed, though students are encouraged to purchase their own editioning paper. Courses running 4 weeks or more include

Get an introduction to the wide variety of relief printing possibilities. Focus
on western woodcut and linoluem cut, and learn proper tool handling, carving
techniques, and printing practices. Working primarily with plywood and linoleum,

Learn to make your photographs into
a fine art print using the non-toxic

In this introductory course, explore a variety of techniquesfrom handbuilding to

Metalsmithing Classes for Adults & Teens
Our metalsmithing program has classes and workshops on various changing topics, allowing students to build their knowledge on firm
foundations as they progress through the program. The studio is equipped with a metal clay/enameling kiln, Smith acetylene/air torches,
oxy-acetylene little torch, oxy-acetylene melting torch, centrifugal caster, hydraulic press, combination rolling mill, dual-speed buffing
arbor with dust collector, drill press, flex shafts, 12" shear, metal hand tools, books, vacuum table, and soldering ventilation system.
Prices cover studio/tool use and basic supplies. Precious metals are not included. Students may purchase their own precious metals, hand
tools, and supplemental supplies, but arenot required. All metals classes that run 6 consecutive weeks or more include open studio.

Our metalsmithing program has classes and workshops on various changing topics, allowing students to build their knowledge on firm
foundations as they progress. See our website for studio amenities. Prices cover studio/tool use and basic supplies. Precious metals are not
included. Students may purchase their own precious metals, hand tools and supplemental supplies, but it is not required. All metals classes

Tinkering—Wire Work Ages 16 & Up
Tinkering is a term for the wire work that became popular in Europe during
the Industrial Revolution. Originally developed to repair broken objects, it later
developed into its own elaborate art form. Using blackened steel wire, create
three-dimensional forms and vessels with traditional techniques, a few tools, and
lots of ingenuity. Bring thin leather gloves (or heavy canvas), heavy-duty wire cutters,
pliers and Sharpie to first class. No prerequisite. Price includes a $35 materials and studio
fee which is non-refundable after class begins.

Our Textile Arts Program offers classes including basketry, felting, knitting, crochet, dyeing, spinning and on-loom weaving. The weaving
studio has over 60 floor and table looms including an AVL compu-dobby, spinning and dyeing equipment, a wide selection of yarns for

Auditorium
Our auditorium is ideal for receptions, dances, lectures and
performances. It is over 3000 square feet and has 20' ceilings,
wood moldings, linoleum tile floors in the main room and a stage
with disabled access. The capacity is 180 people seated at tables,
or 260 theatre style.
Dance Studio
BIRTHDAY PARTIES
Birthday parties are taught by professional teaching artists.
Parties may include ceramics, drawing, painting, dance,
theater, music, metal arts, glass fusing, tie dye and more.

aerobics, and yoga. It is 2400 square feet, has 20' ceilings, and lots

and sound system are available. The capacity is 150 people.
Gymnasium
The gym is 2400 square feet, has 20' ceilings. It is equipped
with wood floors and a sound system. It is available for fitness
classes, and some dances. Events with food, drink, tables or chairs
are possible with MAC’s approval. The capacity is 150 people.
Classrooms
Classrooms are available for parties, classes and meetings. Most
rooms come with a chalkboard and sink. Average dimensions of
classrooms are 24' x 25' with 12' ceilings. Projection screens are
available. The capacity is 45 theatre style and 50 standing room.
Conference Room
The conference room is perfect for neighborhood and board
meetings, or business presentations to smaller groups. It is
equipped with bulletin boards, dry erase board, a large projection
screen and computer or DVD hook-up. An LCD projector is
available for rent. Seats up to 14 around table and 20 in room.
Kitchen & Kitchenette
The full commercial kitchen includes appliances. The kitchenette
includes range, refrigerator and microwave. Dishes, pots and pans,
etc. are not included in either space.
All rental rooms and bathrooms are wheelchair accessible.
All rooms are air conditioned.

Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of
1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP & R) provides
accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs,
so that they may receive an equal opportunity to participate in

How it Works
1. Choose the activity you would like to participate in, and
then the PP&R site where the activity is being offered.
2. Register for the activity. You can do this in person at a
PP&R site, or online at www.PortlandParks.org. When
registering, let the person know that you will need
accommodations in order to participate in the activity
(online, check the box.)
3. Once registered, please contact Inclusion Services at
503-823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through
Inclusion Services you will need to do a phone intake with
a staff member. At the end of the phone intake, it will be
determined whether an assistant will be needed on the
first day of the activity to provide on-site support. Future
assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion
staff will work with the instructor on how to support you

A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and
services, but the basic structure of the program remains
the same. Accommodations are made as needed, and can be
flexible and creative. Participants need to register for activities
that are intended for their birth age. Personal care is provided
for activities in the pre-school and youth category, up through

Notice Of Non-Discrimination
Receipt of full payment is required for registration, unless
otherwise arranged. Please call if you receive a returned
check or declined bank card notice, either of which void
registration.
PP&R programs and services reflect the cultural diversity
of our community. We do not discriminate on the basis
of religion, race, color, gender, national origin, sexual
orientation, age or ability.

Customer Satisfaction

Your satisfaction is our goal! Portland Parks & Recreation
strives for 100% customer satisfaction. If you are not satisfied
with a recreation program or service, please let us know.
•anyone who occupies a permanent residence inside the
city limits of Portland. At the discretion of a Community
Center Director, proof of home address may be required.
Acceptable address verification may include a 1) drivers
license, 2) Oregon ID card, 3) property tax statement, 4)
utility bill or lease agreement with current home address.
Registration Information
•any child living within the school boundaries of the
Reynolds and Centennial School Districts who is
attending a SUN Community School. Through a
partnership between the City and County, a child
attending a SUN Community School is eligible to
register for programs at any SUN Community School
location without paying a non-resident surcharge.
Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be
assessed a 40% surcharge. NR surcharges do not apply to
drop-in activities.
Class Enrollment
Our classes must meet minimum and maximum enrollment
standards. Classes may fill quickly or be canceled due to low
enrollment.
Withdrawal & Refunds
Please notify us at least five (5) business days (MondayFriday), unless otherwise specified, before the start of your
program so that we can refund or credit your account for
the registration fee. Pre-paid materials and admission tickets
cannot be refunded. Participants needing to withdraw after
the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or
refund based upon when the request is made.
Scholarships
City of Portland residents, regardless of age, who require
financial assistance may apply for partial scholarships.

Special Needs
Within the American with Disability Act (ADA), a person
with a disability or special need who desires assistance with
registration and/or participation in general PP&R programs
can contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4328 V/TTY.
If you request assistance through Inclusion Services, a
minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance
notice is required.
If you need a sign language interpreter or FM loop amplifier,
please contact 503-823-4328 V/TTY, at least five business
days in advance of the activity or class. Information about
programs and services is available online for those needing a
voice synthesis; visit our website at www.PortlandParks.org.
For additional ADA information, call 503-823-2223 V/TTY.

Mon-Fri, 8:30am-5pm.
Inclement Weather
If the City of Portland public school districts (Portland
Public, Parkrose, David Douglas, Reynolds, and Centennial)
are closed because of weather conditions, PP&R classes
and youth basketball in those school districts are cancelled.
However, some sites may be open for drop-in activities. Call
the specific PP&R facility for information and opening/
closing times. If inclement weather is forecast on weekends
or holidays, call the PP&R facility or program for operating
hours and activity cancellations.

give permission to the media, to
photograph classes, programs, and
participants at any of our facilities
and properties or any sponsored
activity. Please be aware that these photos are for promotional
purposes and may be used in future publications and media
communications in any format.
If you do not wish to be photographed, please inform staff
and we will make reasonable efforts to honor your request.
If you see staff taking pictures, and you do not wish to be
photographed, please let us know.
If you see a photo of yourself or a family member that causes
you concern, please notify us. As a courtesy, we will make
every reasonable effort to dispose of the image, and will not
use it in future publications. However, we will not be able to
retrieve, destroy or discontinue existing printed publications
in which the photograph may have been included.
Register Now – One of Five Ways
Online at PortlandParks.org – Click on the “Register Now” top tab. Read the prepared information
for our new online registration system, then click the “GO NOW” buttons. Search for classes by age,
category, location, keyword, or narrow your search by specific activity or course number.
PHO NE – Complete this registration form and call any PP&R site using the phone numbers on the map
pages. You may also phone in your registration to the PP&R Customer Service Hotline at 503-823-2525,
Monday through Friday, 8:30am-5:15pm. Only Visa or MasterCard accepted with phone-in registration.
MAIL – Mail in your completed registration form to the program center address. Include full payment using
your Visa, MasterCard or check payable to the City of Portland. Mail-in registration is also received at
the PP&R Customer Service Center, 1120 SW Fifth Ave, Suite 1302, Portland, OR 97204.
FAX – Complete the registration form and fax it to the program center fax number with full payment using
your Visa or MasterCard. Faxes are accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but are processed
during regular business hours.
IN PERSO N – Any PP&R facility is able to process your registration, including the Customer Service
Center located on the first floor of the Portland Building at 1120 SW 5th Ave. All Community Centers are
open for walk-in registration during business hours.
