resurging popular interest in jazz, Americana and an eclectic
fusion of dance and theater forms has created a revivalist
culture of massive proportions.
At Montgomery County Community College, we’re bringing tradition and heritage together with modern interpretations that reflect the ageless continuity of the arts. The heart

JOHN PIZZARELLI
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2014, 8 P.M.
A world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer, John Pizzarelli has established
himself as one of the prime interpreters of classic and contemporary music.
Called “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times, Pizzarelli channels the music
and performance styles of a wide spectrum of artists, including Nat “King” Cole,
Frank Sinatra, Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin, James Taylor and the Beatles.
An Ella Fitzgerald Award winner, he has performed with the Boston Pops, opened
for Sinatra and been hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great
American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.”
This engagement of John Pizzarelli Quartet is made possible through
the ArtsCONNECT program of the Mid- Atlantic Arts Foundation with

jazz singer and pianist Diane “Deedles” Schuur
has built a stellar career by embracing the jazz of
her parents’ generation and the pop music of her
own youth. Blind since birth, Schuur has headlined at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall
and The White House and has toured the world,
performing with such greats as Quincy Jones,
B.B. King, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles and
Stevie Wonder.
Jazz prodigy Cécile McLorin Salvant has dazzled
audiences around the world with her expressive
style and masterful vocal technique, performing
with renowned musicians and as a featured soloist with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln
Center Orchestra. A Thelonious Monk Competition
winner with a Grammy nomination already under
her belt, she rediscovers unique interpretations
of unknown and scarcely recorded jazz and blues
compositions while extending the lineage of Billie
Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.

Jazz-soul fusion performer Gregory Porter
exploded onto the international music scene in
2010 with his debut recording, Water, which
earned a Grammy nomination and charttopping attention on iTunes. Channeling the
“soulful spirit of the ’70s,” Porter has been
heralded as “the next great male jazz singer”
and racked up a continuing stream of accolades, including “best of” lists and a Grammy
award for his sophomore release, Be Good.

Trombonist, composer and arranger Papo Vázquez’s remarkable career
spans three dozen years in the jazz, Latin, Afro-Caribbean and classical
music and recording worlds. A Grammy-nominated artist who grew up in
Puerto Rico and North Philadelphia, Vázquez has toured with Tito Puente and
Dizzy Gillespie, conducted and performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestra, and directed the U.S. Marine Band in its first Afro-Caribbean
jazz performance.

A veteran of bands led by Terence Blanchard and
Herbie Hancock, Lionel Loueke brings jazz into
vibrant contact with the sounds of his homeland in
Benin, West Africa. Praised by Hancock as a “musical
painter,” Loueke combines harmonic complexity, soaring melody, a deep knowledge of African
folk forms, and conventional and extended guitar
techniques to create a warm and evocative sound.
His performance caps an annual event that gives
students, musicians and guitar lovers the chance to
learn from world-class guitar masters.
Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation,
Miguel Zenón represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced the oftencontradictory poles of innovation and tradition. A

harmonica players, Grégoire Maret was
exposed to a diverse array of musical
influences from his Harlem-born, AfricanAmerican mother and his Swiss father, a
local jazz musician.
Having developed his own unique sound and
versatile style, he effortlessly spans musical
genres and has played with such legendary
musicians as Youssou N’Dour, Meshell Nedegeocello, Herbie Hancock, David Sanborn
and George Benson.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very
people who employed them along with the situations and institutions their work involved. Their song parodies and skits play off recent headlines and convey their special
brand of satirical humor. Honored with a Best of D.C. award, they have been featured
on national TV and radio and have recorded nearly three dozen albums, including
2013’s Fiscal Shades of Gray.

star Wilna Hervey was perfect for
the role of Powerful Katrinka in
the 1920s-era Toonerville
Trolley comedies produced
by Montgomery County’s own
Betzwood Studios. But it was her
larger-than-life roles as a skilled
portrait painter, award-winning
enamel artist, erstwhile farmer
and host to some of the Catskills’
wildest parties that made her a legend in the Woodstock, New
York, art colony where she lived for more than 50 years. In
celebration of our 50th annual Betzwood Film Festival, we
present an illustrated retrospective of Hervey’s life complete with
original projection-speed film clips accompanied by live organist
Don Kinnier and followed by a “Meet the Author” reception and
book signing with festival founder Joseph Eckhardt, author of the
Wilna Hervey biography Living Large.

Cuentos paints a vivid picture of the people
and rich cultures of the Spanish-speaking
world with colorful tales from the Caribbean, South America and the Bronx. From
the silly antics of the Puerto Rican anti-hero
“Juan Bobo” to the mysterious dealings
and powers of the Orishas (spirits) in a
suite of Afro-Cuban stories, these tales are
filled with memorable characters, fantastic
plots and positive messages for children.
Spanish-language words are sprinkled
throughout the stories and songs for young
audiences to repeat and retain their sound
and meaning.

Finding North is a one-man play drawn from historical research and oral histories
that brings to the stage powerful stories of the strivings, sacrifices and dreams of the
African-American Underground Railroad hero John P. Parker, as well as contemporary
American immigrants. Set to a beautiful blues guitar score Finding North is an exploration and celebration of the continuing quest for freedom in America.
SKINK is specifically designed for younger audiences and exhibits fun, funky,
non-condescending ideas that children love to explore and can relate to. Set to a
wide range of music from pop to classical, the show features a collection of 14
fast-paced vignettes in which performers use unusual props, costumes, lighting
effects, dance and physical theater to create worlds of magic and wonder.

Pottstown
BOX OFFICE INFORMATION AND HOURS
The Science Center Theater box office hours are generally Monday
through Friday, 10 A.M. to 7 P.M., but may vary during academic breaks.
On performance days, the box office is open one hour before curtain
through intermission. The box office is located in the Science Center
building near the Morris Road entrance.
HOUSE OPENING AND SEATING RESTRICTIONS
The house opens 30 minutes before curtain (with performer approval).
Special seating needs will be accommodated five minutes before opening. Cameras, recording devices, pagers, cell phones, smoking, food and
beverages are strictly prohibited in the theater. The Science Center Theater
is equipped with ramps and wheelchair/companion seating on the right side
of the house. Handicapped parking is available in the parking area next to
the theater. Please indicate the number of wheelchair seats needed in your
order form.
DIRECTIONS

Box Theatre or box office, always enter from 1313 Morris Road. When
