Registration does not imply endorsement. 2014 REPORT TO DONORS 2 to table of contents A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR To our donors: 2014 was a year of tremendous progress at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS). Thanks to your generous support and an extraordinary effort on the part of the HAS team, we saved many lives, while realizing improvements to infrastructure and work processes that promise substantial cost savings, efficiency gains and improved patient outcomes. In the hospital, we treated more patients than ever before, with admissions up by 7 percent over the prior year – this despite the fact that we saw a dramatic decrease in cholera cases, with just 30 in 2014 compared to several thousand at the onset of the outbreak four years ago. We attribute the decline in cholera cases, in part, to HAS community education, clean water and sanitation efforts. The summer 2014 spread of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus resulted in many hospital admissions. Other factors contributing to the rise in inpatient care: the increasing incidence of trauma from road traffic injuries; more and more mothers choosing to have their babies in the hospital instead of at home; and growth in the incidence of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and hypertension, and complications associated with them. Recognizing that these trends are likely to continue, in 2014 we reached a major milestone in our multi-year hospital renovation project supported in part by the American Schools and Hospitals Abroad program of USAID. Through this project, nearly every patient-care area of the hospital will be improved to enhance the ability of staff to care for patients. The 2014 renovation of a storage area at HAS in 2014 provides a more efficient, patientfriendly space for inpatient maternity care. We also introduced new technology to help cut energy costs and to improve information-sharing between staff in our remote community clinics and the hospital. HAS is reliant on diesel-powered generators as there is no electrical grid that serves our location. For the past 59 years, fuel for the generators has been among our most significant costs. In 2014, we began installation of 2014 REPORT TO DONORS 3 to table of contents A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR a new solar power system made possible through the generous support of the Swiss Partnership HAS Haiti, Canadian firm Celestica and other donors. System installation and testing will continue this year, and we anticipate significant savings from this new, green energy solution. Solar panels donated by Canadian firm Celestica were installed in 2014 on the sunexposed roof of the hospital at HAS. The project was made possible through the generous support of Swiss Partnership HAS Haiti. With the support of the Hummingbird Foundation, we also completed a technology project that promises greater staff efficiency and improved patient outcomes. The new wireless communications system joins the remote community clinics with the hospital network, which will, for the first time, enable staff to access and share patient records easily and in real-time. Meanwhile, in the community, HAS community health workers conducted more health visits than ever before, bringing primary care and preventive services such as malnutrition screening, immunizations, and education on a variety of health topics to families in some of the most remote mountain areas of Haiti. We also brought clean water to some 5,000 additional community members in 2014 with 10 new wells; installed latrines and hand-washing stations in three local schools; and constructed and repaired numerous cisterns. In short, we accomplished a great deal in 2014—with your help. I want to personally thank you for your support.
