President’s Message
Dear Members,
As we kick off the new 2005-2006 fiscal year, the ASID Colorado Board of Directors and various
committees are hard at work planning programs and events for the upcoming year.
Energized from this summer’s Leadership Training in Vancouver, our chapter is fortunate to
have such dedicated professionals committing their time to bring you the most value for
your membership. We have the momentum to make this an outstanding year and I look forward
to working with these amazing individuals. Thank you to Pat Bollinger, ASID; Sandy Nienaber,
ASID; Sara Parsons, ASID; Patty Rogers, Allied Member ASID; Jennifer Thompson, ASID
IP; Mark David Uscier, Allied Member ASID; and to Anne O’Neill, Chapter Administrator.
Shannon Griess, Student Member ASID is the new Student Rep to the Board and is effectively
providing the leadership to all ASID students in Colorado. She is also leading the efforts in our
Mi Casa community service project. Students are the future of our profession and ASID. It is
exciting to see Shannon’s enthusiasm and commitment! Thank you, Shannon!
The second ASID Interior Design Magazine, published by McGraw-Hill Construction, is about to be issued. The focus of this
publication is to profile some of the creative work recently completed by our members practicing in Colorado and to demonstrate
the value of involving an ASID professional interior designer in collaboration with the design team early in the planning process.
It includes information on NCIDQ and the process for obtaining qualifications as a professional interior designer. Many thanks
to Patty Rogers, Allied Member ASID; Lori Gross, ASID; Connie Burton, ASID; Mary-Elizabeth Reed, Allied Member ASID;
Judy Gubner, ASID and Cindy Senger, ASID for their time and effort in leading this charge.
The first week in November, the ASID Colorado Chapter, Rocky Mountain Chapter IIDA and CIDC are hosted the NCIDQ delegation, representing the U.S. and Canada. To celebrate this event, Governor Bill Owens issued an Honorary Proclamation, proclaiming
November 4, 2005 as “Interior Design Qualification Day” in the state of Colorado Thank you Lisa Henry, ASID for your perseverance in making this happen.
The ASID Interior Design Awards Committee, lead by Rosalie Ruwart, ASID is also hard at work and has issued the “Call for
Entries” due December 9, 2005. We look forward to another successful Awards Celebration Thursday, May 11, 2006. Save the
date! Mimi Luna Hillen, ASID and Carolyn MacRossie, ASID are co-chairing the Winter Gala scheduled for January 28, 2006.
More details to follow.
In addition to all of the above, the Programs Committee, lead by Meredith Gershberg, ASID Industry Partner under the direction of Sara Parsons, ASID, continues to provide worthwhile educational monthly programs. Our membership continues to grow,
thanks to the enthusiasm of Mark David Uscier, Allied Member ASID and his committee members The success of our chapter
activities would not be possible without these volunteers, but I also want to acknowledge all of those members who have held
these positions in years past, as they paved the way and built the foundation for the processes we share today.
All of this would not be possible without the generous support of our Sponsors. Your contributions are much appreciated and help
us to provide real value to our members. We have revised our Sponsorship Opportunities Menu this year to create a greater ROI,
or return on your investment. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity and leverage your support in ASID to build
relationships among the design community. It’s a win-win!
Sincerely,
Diane R. Pearson, ASID

President-Elect’s Message
Dear Members,
By the time you read this, the ASID Colorado sponsorship drive will be underway for 2005-2006.
This is a comprehensive effort by board members, committee members and various volunteers, to spread the word about the many benefits offered to chapter sponsors. Special thanks
are due to Rebecca Shands, Jennifer Thompson, Lisa Henry and Diane Pearson for all of their time and effort in putting together
the sponsorship menu. Our graphic designer, Sue Clarke, has made it a visual standout!
What is the difference between Industry Partners and Sponsors? Industry Partners, or IP members, have demonstrated their
commitment to our organization by becoming members of the Society. They receive all the benefits of membership including
access to our vast database, the ability to serve on committees and on the board, and also the opportunity to hold chapter programs
and events at their showroom (we limit this option to Industry Partner members only). These benefits give them the chance to
get to know the ASID designers that are most likely to use their products and services, thus creating a win-win situation for both
member designers and member IP’s. ASID benefits additionally from the business knowledge and background of our Industry
Partners, and we welcome their involvement in our Chapter’s many activities.
Sponsors are not members of ASID, yet they are essential for our existence as an organization that has meaning and purpose for
our members. For us to provide monthly programs and quarterly special events, we depend upon the funds which must come
from sponsors. I learned this first-hand last year as the Director of Programs; many of our events were only possible because of
generous donations. The new Sponsorship Menu explains the many features and benefits available to ASID Colorado sponsors,
and highlights our premier event – the ASID Awards Ceremony held in May of each year. This event, with over 450 attendees,
gives maximum exposure to sponsors in front of the “cream of the crop” of Colorado designers! The menu, used for the first
time last year, expresses the businesslike approach that is our ongoing goal of operation. By clearly spelling out the benefits of
each level of sponsorship, we believe that many companies will see the value of being involved with ASID Colorado. The
primary benefit to chapter sponsors is the ability to be recognized by our members, and to have opportunities to interact with
them throughout the year.
Members who are designers can help this effort by bringing sponsorship opportunities to the attention of the suppliers and vendors
you work with on a daily basis. Additionally, when you have a choice of products and vendors to use, please choose the companies that are Industry Partner members and Sponsors. This is where the value of sponsorship is truly demonstrated every day,
in our support of each other. Thanks to all of you for joining me in this effort!
Sincerely,
Sandy Nienaber, ASID

ASID Colorado Chapter Annual Meeting
Held at Mile High House
The ASID Colorado Annual Meeting, held September 13, 2005 at Four Mile
Historic Park, was a well-attended celebration! This business meeting is held
each year to report to the membership on the state of the chapter, but its
primary purpose is to recognize and thank all of the many volunteers who
make chapter activities possible. The new Grant Hall meeting facilities were
beautiful, and the complimentary food and drink was catered with style by
Tony’s. Sheila Culkin of WilsonArt, Industry Partner ASID, was the sponsor
for the evening and displayed many new products for us to peruse.
Diane Pearson, incoming chapter President, gave a brief presentation of
the chapter’s strategic plan with the theme “Excel and Engage”. The top two
goals set by the Board are to demonstrate the value of membership in ASID,
and to communicate effectively with our members. We are off to a great start!
The meeting closed at 7:15, and was followed by a social hour. A good time
was had by all! Hope to see you same time, next year.
Jan Peck, outgoing chapter President, opened the meeting at 6 pm and
gave a brief recap of her year. She thanked all the Chapter Board members
for their service over the past year. All were introduced and recognized,
and in turn, each Board member took the microphone, thanked the people
that served on their committees during the past year, and handed out certificates of appreciation.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement that Lisa Henry, ASID
and Lisa Christner, ASID, were both winners of the National Medalist Award
(a high honor for each of them, and for our chapter!). Congratulations, Lisa
and Lisa!
The new, streamlined board structure was discussed, and the members for
2005-2006 were introduced: Diane Pearson, ASID, President; Sandy
Nienaber, ASID, President-Elect; Jennifer Thompson, Industry Partner
ASID, Financial Director; Mark David Uscier, Allied ASID, Membership
Director; Patty Rogers, Allied ASID, Communications Director; Sara Parsons,
ASID, Professional Development Director; and Pat Bollinger, ASID, Director
at Large. The new board structure opens up more possibilities for chapter
members to contribute, and several new volunteers signed up during the
evening to serve on various committees. There are still opportunities to get
involved, so please contact any board member for information.

2005 National Chapter Medalist Awards
By Lori Gross, ASID
We are very happy to announce our Medalist Awards this year: Lisa
Christner, ASID, and Lisa Henry, ASID!
The National Chapter Medalist Award is the highest award bestowed by
ASID on professional members in recognition of outstanding service and
significant contributions to the chapter, the Society, and the profession as a
whole.
Each year, nominations for this special
award are submitted to the board. After
the board approves the nomination,
the submittal is compiled. Traditionally,
the past president heads up this effort.
There are specific requirements from
Headquarters for the submittal. It must
include letters of recommendation, the
nominee curriculum vitae in chronological format, attached documentation, arranged chronologically, to
substantiate chapter involvement for
a minimum of ten years. This evidence
may include chapter newsletters, press
coverage, clippings, awards, and a
record of civic activities. All of the
material is arranged in binders and
sent to Headquarters in triplicate, along
with the completed nomination form
and at least three endorsements by
chapter board members.
Our medalists for this year have enriched both our chapter and our profession greatly over the years. Following is a short summary of their contributions.
Lisa Christner was the chair for “Puttin’ For A Cure” in 1994. The event
raised $12,000, with one third going to the Leukemia Society. Again in 1995,
she chaired the “Puttin’ For The Kids” event, which raised another $12,000,
with one third going to the Leukemia Society. She was our Colorado
Chapter President 1997–1998, and also a founding member of the Colorado
Interior Design Coalition.
Lisa Henry was the President of her
student chapter of ASID at the Interior
Design Institute of Denver in 1989,
now the Art Institute. She co-chaired
the hospitality committee for the ASID
National Conference in Denver in 1991
and was our Winter Gala Chair in 1999
and 2000. She was our Colorado
Chapter President 1999–2000 and
the Colorado Interior Design Coalition
President 2003–2004. She has authored
several articles over the years regarding
workplace issues and the evolution of
the office interior.
Since the information and supporting
documentation for these submittals is
very comprehensive, it takes quite
some time to gather all of the materials. That process began with the
special help of both Lin Lee and Jean
Sebben. I would also like to thank
many others who have made these
awards possible this year with their
letters of recommendation and research:
Julie Johnson, Sandy Nienaber, Judy
Gubner, Patti Neer, Diane Pearson,
Mimi Hillen, Dennis Leczinski, and
Carol Koplin.
The criteria are as follows: Outstanding
and significant service to the chapter
and the profession of interior design.
Contributions to the interior design
profession having potential local,
regional, or national significance.
Outstanding contributions that have
enriched the human experience in one
or more of the following design-related
fields: literature, education, urban and

ASID Colorado Undertakes Community Service Project
ASID Colorado has begun organizing
forces to aid in a remodel project for
the benefit of Mi Casa, a resource center
for Latina women and their families in
the Denver community located at 360
Acoma Street in Denver. The primary
mission of Mi Casa is to aid and advance
self-sufficiency. Job training and counseling, mentoring, and youth programs
are among the services provided by Mi
Casa in support of this mission.
Mi Casa’s results are impressive and
deserve our support! Last year, their
after-school programs benefited over
350 youths and yielded an assessed
increase of 66% in academic skills and
performance. Over 150 adults enrolled
in business courses offered by Mi Casa, and
more than half of the women enrolled in career
training programs entered jobs paying an
average of $12 per hour.
The first phase of the remodel project focuses
on the Job Resource Center and an adjacent
meeting area, as well as two private offices.
ASID’s goal is to update the finishes to create
a welcoming, functional
center where participants can gather and
take advantage of the
benefits offered by Mi
Casa. These “before”
pictures indicate the
scope of the task at hand.
We are seeking
donations from our
members (furnishings,
time, materials) for this
and subsequent project
phases. Please refer to

The “Fifth Wall” That Brings A Room Together
By Laura Jacobsen, Twistique Custom Rug Studio, Industry Partner
Area rugs, especially custom creations, are crucial design elements that
can truly bring the overall design theme of a room together and can be either
the starting point or the
finishing touch. They
provide what is called
eye relief through the use of interesting colors and textures to break up large
expanses of flooring. Custom area rugs add depth to a room and create specialuse spaces like conversation areas. In fact, the trend among builders and
designers of using hard surfaces such as hardwood and tile make an area rug
a necessity in most rooms. Area rugs not only provide a design element, they
protect floors, provide warmth, and absorb sound. Designers can use custom
area rugs as a focal point or to make a personal fashion statement, even on
top of wall-to-wall carpet.
While area rugs can
be used to create an
overall design theme
or quick décor makeover,
finding area rugs that
meet you or your client’s
specific tastes and requirements can be extremely
difficult. Simply ask fellow
designers that have visited
showroom after showroom and looked through
catalogue after catalogue
without success. That’s
Cont. on page 13
Colorado Connection
12
Cont. from page 12
why quality and style-minded designers are opting for custom area rugs.
They get exactly what they want without the time and hassle. This is especially important with today’s discerning client base that demands unique and
one-of-a-kind solutions.
The beauty of having a custom area rug made for your customer is the fact
that you can get exactly what you want or need - the perfect size, shape,
colors, textures, and pattern or design. No matter what you are looking for
to complete that finished interior design theme, your needs can be met. From
everything as simple as cutting and binding a piece of carpet to your specific
size and shape to a handcrafted inlaid and carved work of art, the choices
are endless. Other options include specialty borders and bindings such as
leather or fabric and even on-site carving of existing wall-to-wall carpet.
Runners on stairways and wall tapestries are also popular applications that
add an artistic theme to any decor. For commercial designers, carpet cove
base is a functional and stylish replacement for rubber cove base. Corporate
logo rugs make a striking statement in an entry or reception area.
Anything that you envision in your mind’s eye is possible. Utilizing specific
colors, textures and designs, custom area rugs help bring all of the design
elements of a room together to create a cohesive theme. When you consider
that each element in the room contributes its own hues to the overall color
theme, as well as adds contrasting touches, you can better understand the
important role that a custom area rug can play in carrying through that finished
look.

ASID Sustainable
Task Force
As we continue to strive to be recognized as professionals in the design
community, knowledge of Sustainable Design and Green Building is critically
important. Under the direction of Sara Parsons, Professional Development
Chair, the Colorado Chapter has created a Sustainable Task Force. This
task force will be headed up by our “Chapter Champion,” Stephany Taddeo,
Allied Member ASID. Other members of the Task Force include Shelly Baxter,
ASID and Cindy Ortlieb. The goal of the Sustainable Task Force is to
collect the latest information and resources in regards to Sustainable Design
and Green Building and act as a conduit to distill and provide the most
relevant information to our Chapter members.
In the future, look for Green Calendar Events on the Colorado Chapter
Website, an ASID Green Event (November 15th at Boulder Associates), and
upcoming newsletter articles. For more information or to become involved
in the Sustainable Task Force please contact Stephany Taddeo at [email protected]

ASID Colorado Seeks
Member Participation
for Speakers Bureau
As ASID members, we all possess specialized knowledge about our field.
The Communications Committee wants to hear from members who are subject
matter experts in any aspect of interior design and who are willing to
volunteer to share that knowledge through a Speakers Bureau. This newly
formed medium provides opportunities for ASID members to gain visibility
within the community, while raising public awareness of the specialized skills
and abilities of ASID designers.
The increased interest in interior design brought on by HGTV and other
make-over programs has left the public hungry for information on a broad
range of subjects. Depending on the audience, the subject may be one of the
two strategic initiatives set forth by ASID National; aging in place, or sustainable design. Kitchen and bath design, lighting, and color psychology are other
subjects in demand. What subjects do you specialize in?
Our goal is to maintain a list of qualified members who are available for
speaking engagements throughout the year. The Communications Committee
is making contact with civic, church, student, and adult education groups
to discuss their speaker needs in the upcoming year and offer ASID members
as a resource.
If you would like to be considered as a speaker, or help in other ways
(writing scripts for speakers, coordinating the schedule, etc.) please contact
the Speakers Bureau Coordinator, Nicole Price, Allied Member ASID at
303-751-1263; or email: [email protected]. If emailing, please be sure
to put “ASID” in the subject line.

a Big Success
By Rebecca Shank, Fundraising Chair, Art Institute of Colorado
ASID Student Chapter
How do hand knitted slippers, yards of fabric and a 6 foot woven Christmas
tree come together on a Saturday morning? At the annual Art Institute of
Colorado ASID Yard Sale, of course!
On September 10, 2005, ASID students from AIC organized and hosted
their annual yard sale and had a lot of fun in the process! Members raised

New Members
Breakfast
The New Membership Breakfast took place on November 1, 2005 and was
sponsored by Hutter Wholesale Hardware. They are a Denver dealer in
designer kitchen and bath products. Many new professional members, industry
partners, and student members were able to meet with ASID mentors and
utilize them as resources as they gain knowledge about the professional
chapter and organization of ASID.
Some of the items discussed at the breakfast meeting included upcoming
events for all members to take advantage of (go to www.asidcolorado.org
for specific dates), and an introduction on Hutter Wholesale Hardware.
Chapter President, Diane Pearson, ASID shared with us a very commendable letter from Governor Owens on the practice and profession of Interior
Design. Overall, the event was a success and we would like to welcome all
of our new members to ASID.

Governor Proclaims “Interior Design
Qualification Day”
On November 4th 2005, a Proclamation was issued by Governor Bill Owens declaring that day Interior Design Qualification Day. The date marked the beginning of a three day Annual Meeting for delegates from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) visiting Denver from across the USA and
Canada. The Governor’s Proclamation, printed here in its entirety, recognizes the importance of achieving the standards set forth by the NCIDQ.
The National Council for Interior Design Qualification
(NCIDQ) exists to protect the health, life safety and welfare
of the public by setting standards of competence in the
practice of interior design. NCIDQ does this by developing
a professional licensure/certification examination that
measures competence in the profession at a level that offers
protection to the public. The examination is used by all U.S.
state governments and Canadian associations that regulate
the practice of interior design. As part of this process, NCIDQ
establishes standards for education and work experience
required for competent practice.
In today’s world, the public expects interior design professionals to demonstrate their competency in all areas of
interior design, and it is not sufficient for designers to
understand only the aesthetics. To deliver a design that
addresses the occupants’ needs on all levels requires more
technical knowledge and a deeper understanding of the
broader issues, and the NCIDQ sets the standard for
professionals in the field of design.
ASID Membership

Retail Appeal of LED
Colored light-emitting diodes can cut lighting energy in retail windows by
30 to 50 percent, while attracting more attention from shoppers, according
to a recent study by the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute and the Los Angeles Department of Power & Water. Researchers
installed custom, slim-profile LED fixtures in the windows of three stores
owned by a popular retailer found in Los Angeles area shopping malls. To cut
energy consumption in each window, researchers eliminated all general fluorescent lighting, reduced the number and wattage of halogen accent lights,
and added LED systems to create colored backgrounds. After eight weeks
and more than 700 surveys, the researchers found that 84 percent of shoppers agreed that the LED-display windows were visually appealing. Sales
data showed no significant change in sales at the test stores.

occupational, spiritual,
physical, intellectual
and emotional areas
and how we, as
designers, can impact
these areas in our design

Fall Student Leadership Gathering
By Sarah Dietz, CSU ASID Student Chapter President
To kick off the school year, the Fall Student Leadership Gathering took
place August 27, 2005 at Imlay Design Inc. Students from the Art Institute
of Colorado, Colorado State University, Arapahoe Community College, Rocky
Mountain College of Art and Design and a burgeoning new chapter from
Westwood College were all in attendance. The Gathering’s purpose is to aide
in the efforts of training new board members for their upcoming school year.
To start the event Shannon Griess, current ASID Student Representative
to the Board and Lynn Williamson, past ASID SRB, made the introductions
and welcomed everyone to the event. Diane Pearson, ASID Colorado President,
initiated how ASID is organized, including how student chapters relate to the
professional chapter’s strategic plan. The group also discussed some strategic
issues at the national level including Green Design, and Aging in Place as two
main areas of focus. The group then broke out in smaller discussion sessions
that pertain to each board members position. Each group was advised about
their specific duties and was given the chance to have a question/answer
session to improve current issues pertaining to their school.
After lunch everyone came together for an open discussion to answer
specific questions from the different schools. Some of these issues included

Action Whirlpools
Action Whirlpools has been a business presence in Denver since 1980,
with Bill Hendrick assuming ownership several years ago.
Registration started at 8:15 a.m. allowing students to sign in, receive their
complementary mesh bags provided by ASID, IIDA and the Design Center, as
well as wander around the showroom until 9:00 a.m. when the excitement
began. At 9:00 students divided up into two main groups; one went to the
mock interview, the other to the portfolio review. The mock interview was
set up so students got the chance to interview with professionals and get
feedback to prepare
them for the real interview once they graduate or go for an
internship. The second
group went to listen to
three recent graduates
explain about their
experience finding a
job as well as show
students their own portfolio.

After that, students
were allowed to visit
different showrooms where they were taught different aspects to that particular showroom. For instance those at Allure Custom Rugs were shown a
demonstration of rug making, and those at Lindsay Associates had the chance
to understand more about what makes wood durable in a commercial setting.
Those students that showed up last minute were still able to participate in
the showroom lectures and get a better understanding of what the Design
Center has to offer.
Students broke for lunch but regrouped and those that participated in one
of the two groups switched and participated in the opposite lecture. After

Kirk Axelson
A member since 2002 (known as Precision
Draperies Inc.), Kirk Axelson has dealt with
some hard, challenging years. Just before
Christmas 2002 his wife of 19 years was
killed in an auto accident. Since then, he
has made an inspirational comeback.
On April 2004, Kirk closed his drapery
workroom of 23 years and sold the equipment. This allowed him a more flexible
Kirk Axelson
schedule for his children and he seized the
opportunity to write a drapery reference
manual and study guide, something he had always wanted to do.
In February 2005, his new company, Precision Draperies Education,
published two books: The Ultimate Designers Workbook and Study
Guide for The Ultimate Designers Workbook. These workbooks fill what
he believes to be a void in the industry.
His company received their first CEU credited course on September
21, 2005, for “Fundamentals of Draperies & Drapery Valances”.
His philosophy is that when a person knows what they want out of
life, then it will come with patience, faith, time, and most of all belief.
He feels that there is nothing that can stop a person from reaching their
goals other than their own fears and self-talk.
Kirk owes a lot to his family, friends, faith, and most of all to a dear
close friend who came to his rescue just after the death of his wife.
Without her marvelous kindness and open heart, Kirk would not be
here today.
Kirk Axelson now serves on the communications committee as a

that, again students were allowed to tour around the different showrooms
and listen to representatives speak about what goes on inside their space.
To end the event raffle tickets were given to students to participate in
the drawing which gave away fifteen $100 dollar gift certificates to Meininger’s.
Overall, the day was a successful event for students. It gave them real world
experience that will be valuable to them in the future. It turned out to be a
great success!

FAQ’S
Have a question about your new membership or renewal? I’ve
assembled a list of Frequently Asked Questions (and the answers to them).
What is the membership year? Regardless of when you join, the membership year is from January 1 through December 31. The only exception is
new members who join after October – those memberships are good until
the following December 31.
How much are dues? National Dues are $40.00 for 2006. Local chapters usually have a separate dues structure to support local chapter activities. Check with your chapter or faculty advisor to find out how much
they are.

Are dues pro-rated? No
How long does it take for my membership to be processed? Allow 90
days for new memberships. Renewals are much faster. If you haven’t
heard anything after 90 days, check with your Chapter Leadership Team,
call your SRB (Student Representative to the Board) or someone on the
Membership committee for recommendations. Also available now is
on-line membership. Go to www.asid.org and you can renew or join ASID
online vs. mailing your application.
What do I do if 90 days have passed and I still haven’t gotten anything
from National? Talk to your Chapter Leadership Team first, then either
call or e-mail the Membership team at National (www.asid.org or
202-546-3480). Be sure that you have a check image or credit card statement showing that payment was made, and note the date.
How do I take advantage of Members Only events when I don’t have
a membership card yet? Most student chapters in Colorado have a system
for documenting members. Some chapters even produce their own cards
just for this circumstance. Again, talk to your Chapter Leadership Team.
I’m not getting notice of local events or my ASID Icon magazine. How
do I fix that?
1. Check your contact information on-line at www.asid.org.
• Click on ‘update profile’ and log in using your user name (first
initial + first 9 letters of last name) and password (your membership
number).
• Because…if your address has changed ASID National will not know
where to send ICON.
• And… if your e-mail address has changed, you cannot get ASID
Flash or E-mail Blasts from ASID Colorado.
2. If your permanent mailing address is out of state, you may be on another
state’s roster. Try changing it to a Colorado mailing address.
You can update all of this information on line, and it should get better.
But…ONLY YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION!!!
What publications should I be getting? ASID ICON Magazine, ACCESS
(the National Student Newsletter), ASID Flash (if you’ve subscribed to it
on-line), ASID Colorado Membership Directory, notification of local chapter
programs & events by e-mail and other invitations as appropriate to
chapter events.

When are the Professional Chapter Events? The Chapter Board meetings are open to visitors and are at 5pm on the first Wednesday of each
month. Locations vary, so call the Meeting Edge to verify your attendance
and learn the location. Program Events are usually the Tuesday following
the Board meetings (but not always). Check the Colorado Chapter Website
(www.asidcolorado.org) first, then call a board member or The
Meeting Edge for information.
I would like to get more involved, but don’t want to over-commit
myself. How do I do this without getting in over my head? All committee
members understand the limits students have on time, money and energy.
Volunteer assignments are usually short-term, (an hour or two at most)
and are a great way to meet your future colleagues! Call any board member
to get the ball rolling.
I have other questions, but don’t know who to call. Call me. My name
is Shannon Griess. I am a student at Colorado State University, and I am
the Student Representative to the Board for 2005-2006. It is part of
my job to help you understand what ASID can do for you. My phone
number is 970-218-5134. My e-mail is [email protected]. I’d
love to hear from you!!!

anyone interested in communicating about relief efforts, posting queries
to locate colleagues, friends and family in the disaster areas, and more.
As part of its long-term commitment to assist members living in disaster

The Art Institute of
Colorado launches
new Bachelor of Arts
in Design Management
Design Management has grown to become a respected discipline due to
design's role as a tool to increase value and achieve goals, and this is being
recognized in today's business environments. With this in mind, The Art
Institute of Colorado has developed a new Bachelor of Arts program, Design
Management. Scheduled to begin its first class in the fall of 2005, this program
combines an education in both creative disciplines and business-related
skills, focusing on the management of creative projects that heightens organizational effectiveness.
The Design Management program recognizes the reality of American business today and the demand for a workforce trained to manage the creative
process to enhance business outcomes. Its aim is to produce value for companies and organizations by educating students in effective, solution-oriented
processes that will yield positive results.
Design management professionals are simultaneously imaginative and
practical, artistic and realistic. Those who desire to shape and direct the
design process for business value, or have some business experience and
desire further training to move into a creative management role are ideal
candidates for the Design Management program. In addition, individuals
with an entrepreneurial bent – or those who are as intrigued with the creative
process as they are with the flow of an organization – are ideal candidates
for this program
The program offers the choices of studio electives, based on individual
career goals, that enable a student to major and minor in creative disciplines
from eight existing Bachelor of Arts programs, including interior and industrial design. Students will develop technical design skills, leadership, project
management abilities and an understanding of marketing and financial principles.
Upon graduation, students will be prepared for entry-level positions such
as production assistant in a design studio or in-house creative department,
marketing assistant for a corporation or interior design firm, and assistant
traffic manager for an advertising agency. Graduates will possess skills
that can afford career advancement into such areas as marketing director,
project managers and brand strategists.
If you are interested in learning more about the Design Management
program at The Art Institute of Colorado, please call 1-800-275-2420 or visit

What is CAPS?
The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation program teaches
the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential
to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling
industry: home modifications for the aging-in-place. The NAHB Remodelors
Council, in collaboration with the AARP, NAHB Research Center, and NAHB
Seniors Housing Council, developed this program to provide comprehensive,
practical, market-specific information about working with older and maturing
adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place.
Why Earn the CAPS Designation?
The CAPS program will expand your understanding of the aging-in-place
market, provide the necessary technical knowledge and resources, and
give you the tools to gain access to that market.
Benefits of the CAPS Designation
• Recognition for completing the only designation program in the
country dedicated to improving the knowledge of remodelers who
want to serve the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling market
• Marketing and customer service tools to gain access to the burgeoning
aging-in-place market
• Technical knowledge to solve the remodeling needs of the aging-in-place
population
• Greater understanding of the aging-in-place population
• Official CAPS certificate and lapel pin identifying your accomplishment
Overview of the CAPS Program
In a three-day program CAPS teaches the strategies and techniques for
marketing, designing, and building aesthetically enriching, barrier-free living
environments. This program goes beyond universal design; CAPS addresses
the communication and technical needs to a specific market. CAPS adds
value to that knowledge by providing insights into how to market to and work
the demographic group. Candidates who already possess an industry certification with a business component are exempt from taking the third day
(see below for additional information).
• Working With and Marketing to Older Adults: background on the older
