the
benchmark
for New Zealand Chardonnay
Growing up and studying wine in the cool climate of
New Zealand, Kim Crawford understood that his
home country is a natural spot for white wines that
make vibrancy and freshness their focus. That’s
why this unoaked Chardonnay has been around just
as long as the Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc –
since the winery’s very first vintage. What NZ’s cool
growing conditions do for Savvy they can do for
Chardonnay too, lending plenty of fruit intensity and
aromatics on the nose, and that lip-smacking
brightness on the palate. This one shows off all that
character in unadorned fashion, to great effect.

TASTING NOTE: Wines like this one are a happy
reminder that some Chardonnays are bottled naked as
the day they were born. This one is quite fresh and
vibrant with orchard blossom, lemon zest, white peach
and a kiss of buttercream. Richly textured yet nervy
on the palate, with a deep and pure fruit core of citrus,
apple and peach all soaring to a clean, refreshing
finish. Enjoy with seafood stir-fry or roast pork.

Building on the success of their world-renowned Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand w
The tale of New Zealand’s rise
in the wine world is both unusual and remarkable.
For starters, they took Sauvignon Blanc (a little grape
seen mainly in pockets of the Loire Valley and in
white Bordeaux blends) and used it to make incredibly
intense single-varietal wines quite unlike anything
else. These radical premium wines skyrocketed to
international fame. And that’s another thing: premium
wines. In stark contrast with nearly every other wine
region in the world, NZ produces almost exclusively
premium wines – a strategy that goes hand in hand
with their meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard,

The blue sky, pristine waters, soaring mountains
and thriving vineyards in this view of New
Zealand’s Lake Wanaka make a fitting metaphor
for the country’s wine: perfection.
d winemakers are forging new paths in an ongoing quest for premium perfection.
and the extremely long autumns that create such
incredible flavour concentration. Having mastered
Sauvignon Blanc and perfected a style all their own,
NZ’s winemakers are moving into interesting new
territory with different grape varieties and site-specific
wines to complement their signature Savvies.
Here, we touch down on
the twin islands to visit
four iconic producers who
are leading the charge.

big rewards
True artisans are always looking for the next
big challenge. That’s the story of New Zealand’s dynamic
duo, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy. After cutting
their teeth at the iconic Cloudy Bay as lead viticulturalist
and winemaker, respectively, the pair were inspired
to seek out other exciting expressions of Marlborough
and start their own boutique winery. They looked to
Sutherland’s own vineyards, with some of the region’s
oldest vines (planted in the 1970s and ’80s), and saw
potential for something great. Their approach centres
on artisanal techniques to highlight the purity of

the fruit. They insist on hand-picking in the vineyard,
never mind that “some people say we’re crazy for
hand-picking Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc,” as Ivan
bemusedly puts it. The vineyard is tended organically,
using compost to strengthen the soil. They’ve also got
a hands-on (hoofs-on?) approach to avoiding herbicides, allowing sheep to graze in the vineyards and
remove weeds the old-fashioned way. And the label
design? The tree pictured there is a cabbage tree, a
common sight in the Dog Point region and a nod to
the wine’s birthplace.

magic,
green magic?
You could hardly have a more auspicious
start than Oyster Bay Wines, who grabbed the trophy
for best Sauvignon Blanc at the International Wine &
Spirit Competition with their first-ever vintage. If
that sounds like a fairytale beginning, maybe there’s
something to London wine writer Michael Kime’s
comment that these wines are “pretty close to being
the elusive stuff of dreams.” Oyster Bay is named
for the local body of water just off the northern tip of
Marlborough, the region where it all began, and where
6 VINTAGES
their amazingly eye-catching flagship winery resides.
They’ve since expanded to Hawke’s Bay on New
Zealand’s North Island, where Merlot (almost unheard
of in Marlborough) is a specialty. Their guiding philosophy,
on both islands, is a commitment to the environment
where the wines are grown: Oyster Bay is a founding
member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.
Their vineyards are fully accredited sustainable, and
their initiatives in water conservation and wetland
protection set a high standard for eco-conscious wine
production. By protecting the environment, they
reason, they protect their future.

from
to reality
in four short
years
Like so many great ideas,
Anthony Walkenhorst joined
Kim Crawford Wines in 2005.
Initially, he worked alongside
Crawford himself, honing the
winery’s philosophy and style.
He’s now chief winemaker.
8 VINTAGES
this one was hatched in an Auckland
cottage. New Zealand native Kim
Crawford and his wife Erica didn’t
have a vineyard or a winery, but B.Sc.
graduate Kim was convinced that the
fledgling wine industry in his home
country was about to take off. When
Kim was first getting into wine, NZ was
known more for fortified ‘sherry’ than
for its wines. “It was a revolutionary
time for New Zealand winemaking,”
Kim recalls. “The potential was certainly there to be able to make
something other than sherry, even
though few would have guessed at the
full extent.” Kim enjoyed plenty of
early success, having been named
Winemaker of the Year at the Royal
Easter Fair in 1994 and then again in
1996 while making wines for Coopers
Creek. The same year the second
honour came, he and Erica set up Kim
Crawford Wines as a virtual concern in
a spare room in their Auckland
country home. Right from the start
Kim looked beyond Sauvignon Blanc,
also making unoaked Chardonnay in
that first vintage. It wasn’t long before
the wines made their way around the
globe. Virtual became reality when
Kim Crawford opened a state-of-the-art
winery in 2000. Anthony Walkenhorst,
the current chief winemaker at Kim
Crawford, joined the team in 2005.

a
CloudyBay
pioneer
among pioneers
This is, if you’ll pardon the phrase,
the original origin story. To say that New Zealand wine
wouldn’t be what it is today without Cloudy Bay is hardly
a stretch. Back in the mid 1980s, fine winegrowing was
such a foreign concept in New Zealand that it actually
took a foreigner, David Hohnen, to shine a lantern
on the country’s potential. An accomplished Australian
winemaker who won the famed Jimmy Watson trophy
in successive years (1982 and ’83), Hohnen met a
handful of pioneering NZ winemakers who were growing
Sauvignon Blanc. Their wines were rough and rustic,
but Hohnen was impressed by the flavour intensity and
sensed promise. He visited Marlborough himself and
was particularly intrigued by the area around the aptly
named Cloudy Bay, a misty body of water christened in
the 18th century by Captain Cook on his voyage to
New Zealand. This 20th-century voyage was no less
momentous: the cool, sunshine-laden mountainside
meadows beyond the reach of the mists inspired
Hohnen to grow premium Sauvignon Blanc in that
now-legendary soil and create Cloudy Bay, the winery
that, as wine writer Jamie Goode observes, “is still
producing the definitive example of Marlborough
Sauvignon Blanc.”

Portugal is blessed with a wealth of unique

lover an embarrassment of riches. Food-friendly,
attention-grabbing, and easy-to-love red blends from
grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz
(aka Tempranillo), and Tinta Barroca to name but
a few; exciting whites such as Vinho Verde; and
Portugal’s other great fortified wine, Madeira, are all
playing a major role in capturing the imaginations
and palates of wine lovers the world over – and have
begun to garner well-deserved and consistently high
praise from international critics. Taste them for yourself, and join the conversation.

Prince

County
An easy drive from Toronto or Ottawa,
this picturesque region is known for
its elegant wines and country charm.
Sightseeing amidst the villages and vineyards of Prince
Edward County, one cannot help but feel a pervasive sense of quaint
country charm. In contrast to the chill of its winters, there’s a delightful
warmth about the place, with its old-fashioned cottage-style homes and
farmhouse wineries that could almost make one forget the truth of this
dynamic region: The County, as locals call it, is the youngest appellation
in Ontario’s VQA wine scene, and in less than a decade, it has stunned
oenophiles near and far with the quality of its exquisitely elegant wines.

The beating heart of The County is the town of Picton, dotted with picturesque
B&Bs as well as the Claramount Inn & Spa, a colonial revival mansion nestled
on the shore of Picton Bay that houses one of the area’s great restaurants, Clara’s.
The local restaurants that continue to spring up in The County proudly feature the
locally grown wines, and menus are often specifically tailored to suit the wines’
delicate textures and cool-climate complexity. Along the main street is where you’ll
find many of these little restos and bistros, ice cream parlours and souvenir shops,
and the Regent Theatre, one of the few surviving art-deco movie houses in
Ontario. There’s a look and feel about the place that’s reminiscent of a traditional
English town. Indeed, the topography of The County is so like the English countryside
that it was used as a training ground for British Second World War pilots, a heritage
that can still be glimpsed in the historic Picton airfield.
Heading out from Picton in any direction save north you’ll soon find yourself among
charming vineyards and wineries, plus a host of other fun tourist stops. Driving (or
cycling – there are several cycle shops to outfit visitors) eastward along the peninsula
will afford visits to the County Cider Company and the Black River Cheese

Norm Hardie,
Norman Hardie Winery
Great wines have always been
made on the edge. The best
expressions of Syrah are from
the Northern Rhône; the best
Pinots are from Burgundy.
The County, geographically
and climatically, is on the edge.
We’ve got calcareous limestone and clay, quite a rare soil
mixture that’s also seen in Burgundy and the Northern
Rhône. The County is still a young emerging region and
we’ve got a lot of small, passionate artisanal producers. Five
years ago there were some good wines being made. Now
there are a lot of very excellent wines. The overall quality of
wines across The County has jumped phenomenally in the
last five years. We continue to get to know our soils, our
climate, and our vineyards. The County is putting out some
world-class wines.
What makes
The County
such an exciting
wine region?

Company. A jaunt south leads to the famous dunes and
beaches of Sandbanks Provincial Park, with its almost
surreal terrain that might make you mistake your surroundings
for California or the Caribbean. West of Picton, past Barley
Days Brewery and the town of Bloomfield, is where you’ll
find the most concentrated cluster of vineyards. With its gently
hilly terrain and its soils rich in clay and limestone, the western
arm of The County is home to over two-thirds of the region’s
30+ wineries. You could easily hop on a bike and hit half a
dozen wineries in a single glorious day, complete with lunch at a
gourmet winery kitchen. There are even accommodations to be
had within the vineyards if you visit The Inn at Huff Estates,
which also boasts the Oeno Gallery exhibition space. It’s a
great spot to take in some breathtaking artworks before returning
outside into the equally breathtaking work of art that is The
County itself.

SICILY
LA VELONA
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2007
DOP
CUSUMANO NOÀ 2008
IGT Sicilia
The blend here is 40% Nero d’Avola, 30% Merlot
and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.
TASTING NOTE: A blend of Nero d’Avola, Merlot
and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2008 vintage of
Noà shows excellent concentration and intensity
with lingering tones of ripe blackberry, cinnamon,
wet earth and graham cracker. It’s a bold red
wine, but the distinctive Nero d’Avola personality
comes through nicely, linking the wine to its
territory. Score: 92 (Monica Larner, Wine
Enthusiast, April 2012)
Full-bodied & Firm
109512 (XD)
750 mL $18.95
TASTING NOTE: A bold, plump and soft expression
of Brunello, with sweet berry fruit, chocolate
fudge, cinnamon spice and marzipan. The wine’s
appearance is dark and well extracted. Despite
the grandeur of the nose, the mouthfeel is compact,
tight and firm. Score: 94 (Monica Larner, Wine
Enthusiast, May 2012)

TUSCANY
ROCCA DELLE MACÌE
SER GIOVETO 2008
IGT Toscana
CARPINETO SPOLVERINO 2011
IGT Toscana
This wine is crafted as a Chianti Classico, but as it’s
sealed with a screwcap, it must be classified as IGT.
TASTING NOTE: Spolverino translates to “Feather
Duster,” but the only thing being swept away by
this versatile and easy-drinking delight will be your
taste buds. Fresh aromas of red and dark berry
fruit with spice and cedar accents and a lovely
violet floral note. The palate offers fine balance and
structure, with well-integrated fruit and acidity, and
a touch more spice. (VINTAGES panel, Sept. 2012)
Medium-bodied & Fruity
317149 (XD)
750 mL $17.95
TASTING NOTE: Black currant and plum flavors
are intense and vibrant, yet the oak is assertive
now. With air this gains suppleness and definition,
showing a firm, spicy impression on the finish.
Ambitious. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2014 through 2024. Score: 91

CHIANTI CLASSICO 2009
DOCG
CASTELLO DI MONTERINALDI
CHIANTI CLASSICO
RISERVA 2007
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Complex and intense, with warm
earth, cherry and chocolate dominating the nose
here. This is amazingly fleshy for Chianti with
excellent fruit and very present tannins. A touch of
spice on the finish. Try this one with a steak and
mushroom pizza. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2013)
Medium-bodied & Fruity
317370 (XD)
750 mL $23.95

TASTING NOTE: The 2009 Chianti Classico is a
gorgeous, racy wine laced with red fruit, flowers,
spices and mint, all supported by fine, silky tannins.
The floral elements are quite prominent and give
the 2009 an element of brightness that is highly
attractive. This caressing, supple Chianti Classico
should be at its finest over the next decade. The
Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese that spent
12 months in Slavonian oak casks. Anticipated
maturity: 2012-2019. Score: 90 (Antonio Galloni,
erobertparker.com, June 2012)

BORIN VIGNA COSTA
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2009
DOC Colli Euganei
This wine was ranked #75 in Wine Spectator’s
Top 100 for 2012.
This wine was awarded BBM in Gambero
Rosso 2012.
TASTING NOTE: Cherry jam, pomegranate, red
licorice and vanilla tones abound on the nose.
Plenty of sun-kissed fruit on the palate. A very fun
take on Cabernet with a distinctively Italian
sensibility. The finish is elegant and long. This will
stand up to the meatiest of pastas, or a lamb
risotto. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2013)

TASTING NOTE: A silky red, offering fresh fruit
flavors of plum and blackberry, with espresso and

VALL SANZO CRIANZA 2008
DO Ribera del Duero
LE RAGOSE RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA
CLASSICO SUPERIORE 2008
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Though balanced overall, there’s
a firm edge to the flavors of ground spice, pine
forest, pomegranate and grilled plum. This offers
bright acidity and needs some air to open up.
Best from 2014 through 2023. Score: 89 (Alison
Napjus, winespectator.com, Web Only, 2012)
TASTING NOTE: The 2008 Vall Sanzo Crianza
is 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero. It
exhibits a fragrant bouquet of lightly roasted black
fruits, lavender, sandalwood, earthy minerals, and
blackberry. Dense, ripe, and succulent with a hint
of balsamic emerging in the glass, it will benefit
from another 1-2 years of cellaring and provide
optimum drinking from 2013 to 2020+. Score: 90

THE PERFECT ACCESSORY
Raise an eyebrow (or two) and let slip that this
fruity and structured Bordeaux is actually…
Welsh. Well, not quite, but Château du Seuil is
owned and operated by the Watts family from
Wales. Their meticulous vineyard work and
organic farming practices create expressive
wines of considerable finesse. Coincidentally,
this one’s perfect for the national dish of
Wales, lamb stew.
