Our goal is to display work from every South student sometime throughout the school year. Inspiration for this art gallery originated in honor of Alexa Kersting, daughter of Loren and Monica Kersting, who passed away in July of 2004 while waiting for a lung transplant. During Alexa’s six years as a student here, she created many works of art and poetry, as all of our students have done. The frames for the gallery were purchased by the Kerstings to commemorate Alexa’s love of the arts. The following will have their art on display the week of Oct. 30 - Nov. 6. Dela Voegele, Aurey Morris, Abbigail Haring, Mackenzie Beck, Kamey Leedom, Raina Chwialkowski, Lyla Stegman, Delaney Augdahl, Ian Skari, Olivia Klaman, Emily Ochocki, Rylee Larsen, Aubree Randall, Meghan Esposito, Grace Wehri, Melangell Oduor, Chae Teigen, Sophia Holloway, Ella Willgohs, Tyger Albano, Lydia Rector. My name is Jenny Poehls, and I am the new music teacher at South Elementary. Many of you may remember me from last spring when I student taught with Bonnie Yoney. The music program that she created at South should be an inspiration to all teachers – it certainly is for me. Teaching music is one of the biggest joys in my life, and I will work to continue the tradition of excellence at our school. I did not begin my career in music education like most teachers. Graduating from West Fargo High in 2001, I attended NDSU for music performance and went on to receive my Master of Music from the University of Northern Iowa. I have taught private piano lessons for thirteen years and also taught with the Children’s Music Academy in Fargo for four years. I currently hold the position of Lecturer of Flute at NDSU, but through lessons and the Academy, I discovered that working with children was a true passion of mine and went back for my teaching certification. I am thrilled to have a new home at South Elementary – I look forward to meeting you and working with your amazing children! The fourth graders of South Elementary will proudly present their fall program, “Sing, America, Sing!” on Friday, November 13th at 8:30 in the morning. The program will feature patriotic songs celebrating our great country and its people. The students and I have been working hard in the classroom to prepare some exciting music, and we hope you can join us on November 13th! October 30, 2015 Page 3 Donuts with Dad Thank you to all the dads and other special guests who were able to come and share a donut with your First and Fourth grade students this morning. This is a fun time for our students and parents. We would like to thank our PTA for sponsoring this event, and an extra Thank you to the moms that were here to set up and to Mary our Head Cook for her help as well. Is Your Child Dressed for The Weather Please make sure your child is dressed well for the colder weather before they come to school. Students go outside every day for recess for 25 minutes, also if they walk to school they have to be outside until 8:00am. They should have a warm coat, hat and gloves. It is also a good idea to send a sweater or light sweatshirt for students to wear in the classroom if they get chilly in class, they are not allowed to wear their coat in the classroom. We want all our students to be safe and warm. Special Guest Lisa Green, meteorologist from KVLY weather was here Thursday to talk to our 3rd Grade classes. She discussed how they use science to create the weather forecast. Lisa showed students what it looks like at the studio when they use green screens to produce the weather report and how she has to write up her own script to follow for the broadcast. Lisa is very interested in helping to show students the importance of Science and let students know things they could do if they are interested in a career in Weather. We appreciate her taking the time to come and talk to our students. PTA NEWS Join us for our next PTA meeting Tuesday, November 17. Second grade teachers will be presenting what they are doing in the classroom. Meetings are from 6:15 to 7:30 in the school library. Free childcare is provided at all the meetings. PTA also sponsors a night at Skateland once a month where Skateland is just open for our school and one or two other schools. A percentage of each admission is given back to us based on the number of students we have there. It is a fun night for everyone. Next Skateland Night is: Friday November 13th 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Page 4 October 30, 2015 Turn your clocks back November 1 South Elementary 5th graders will be touring the Plains Art Museum in downtown Fargo on November 10th. The exhibits offer an once-in-a-lifetime experience this year with the showing of Pablo Picasso’s clay collection! Local artist Star Wallowing Bull also has an impressive showing in his solo exhibition that is sure to be a student favorite. The tour is an hour long with their classroom teachers chaperoning. Mrs. Yanish (art teacher) will meet them at the museum and also serve as their guide. The Plains Art Museum, South Elementary and Mrs. Yanish have strict guidelines (attached) that we hope you can discuss with your child. This is a wonderful experience and privilege and we hope everyone will be able to enjoy it. Thank you for your cooperation Indian Education Registration Indian Education services are available to students who are either a descendent or an enrolled member of a tribe and have a completed Title 7 grant 506 form on file in our office. If you haven’t already registered in the Indian Education program, you can access the forms online at www.fargo.k12.nd.us/indian or call us and we can mail the forms to you or you can stop by our office to fill them out. You can email Indian Education Administrative Assistant, Darlene Boyle at [email protected], fax (701-446-2899) or mail it over to our office at the Agassiz Building, 1305 9th Avenue South Fargo, ND 58103. Please provide the student, parent or grandparents tribal enrollment number. The form requires a tribal enrollment number on it in order to be valid. We only need one of the three enrollment numbers. If you do not have access to the tribal enrollment number, we can assist you in obtaining it. If you know that you filled out our Title 7 (506) form and you didn’t put a tribal enrollment number on it, please call our office with it at 701-446-3052. Funding for the Title 7 grant includes school supplies, helps with a mentoring program for students in grades 6-12 (need to qualify), advocating and cultural programming (i.e. Youth Leadership Day, Storytelling event, Indian Summer Reading Program, graduation picnic). The Title 7 506 form only needs to be filled out once and it is kept in our files until they graduate. We need one per student. These forms are necessary to fund the Indian Education Program so that we can continue to provide cultural and academic support to the Native American students in the Fargo and West Fargo Public Schools. We would be glad you answer any questions that you have. Thank you for your assistance!
