Bilingual (English/French)
Since our predecessors painted horses,
deer, and other beasts on cave walls,
humans have maintained a tradition of
art involving animals. Romantic, tragic, or
scientific, wildlife art today highlights the primal nature of untamed creatures
around us, from the powerful grace of the predator to the idyll of the doe. Atop
a cliff overlooking the National Elk Refuge in Jackson, Wyoming, the National
Museum of Wildlife Art provides the opportunity to observe wildlife and enrich
understanding of nature through art. This calendar’s twelve images sample wildlife
art from contemporary painters and earlier artists who developed the tradition.

J. Fenwick Lansdowne (Canadian, b. Hong Kong, 1937–2008) was
a passionate naturalist whose careful study of birds inspired an
extraordinary body of work. His paintings—as meticulous in their
details as they are arresting in their sensitive portrayals—reflect
the essential nature of each bird he depicted. Lansdowne’s avian
portraits are unsurpassed in their fidelity to the birds’ natural
expressions, behaviors, and habitats.

Imaginary Realist Robert Bissell (American, b. England 1952) derives
his inspiration from the animal world. Much more than portraits of
rabbits, bears, and elephants, Bissell’s paintings are allegories for
the challenges and discoveries all living beings encounter. They
are invitations to learn more about ourselves and to reflect on life’s
transitions in making our way in the world.
Jeannine Chappell
Enduringly fascinating enigmas of the bird world, owls have long drawn
the attention of humans as we try to understand them—varied species with
distinctly expressive faces and striking, elusive, powerful characters. Observing
owls in the care of local rescue organizations, San Francisco Bay Area resident
Jeannine Chappell begins her collage-like works on paper, later digitally
enhancing them. Her work conveys the unique character of each species,
bringing us closer to these intensely wild birds.

Sketchbook and camera in hand, Molly Hashimoto explores
the wild areas of the western United States to create prints
and paintings of its peaks, abundant flora, and native birds in
their natural habitats. Near her home in the Pacific Northwest,
encountering a great blue heron resting beside a waterway, with
a crisp mountain large in the distance, is a fortuitous but casual
moment. For this calendar, she delights us with a dozen
hand-tinted prints of the region’s avian residents.
William Seltzer Rice (1873–1963) created humble yet stunning images that
were in harmony with the aesthetics of the Craftsman style. A masterful
watercolorist, distinguished teacher, and avid outdoorsman, Rice found
enduring inspiration in nature. He believed in making original artwork
available to a wide audience at modest cost and, being a skilled craftsman as
well as an artist, Rice designed, carved, and printed all of his blocks himself.
This calendar contains twelve block prints that reflect Rice’s love of the
outdoors and his observations as a naturalist.

A founder of the pattern and
decoration movement, Robert
Rahway Zakanitch began exhibiting
in New York City in the 1960s.
Recently, Zakanitch has created several series of massive gouache works at a scale
that’s rarely seen with the medium, some up to eight feet high. The lush, cascading
drapery of flowers in these paintings reflects the artist’s reverence for the beauty of
the natural universe. This calendar features twelve colorful Zakanitch paintings—
eight as part of the Hanging Gardens Series plus four additional works.
A native of South Wales, Rosalind Wise (British, b. 1949) takes
inspiration from nature, painting scenes of flower gardens,
ponds, and meadows on canvases typically four to five feet
across. Wise works from studies made in situ, from specimens
she has collected, and from photographs she has taken. Her
observant eye and her love of the natural world are evident
in the fresh, vibrant images that grace this calendar.

Charley Harper
Charley Harper’s vivid, often humorous paintings have delighted art
and animal lovers for more than sixty years. Ever a conservationist,
Harper (American, 1922–2007) transported viewers into the natural
world via lively but self-described flat images that don’t lay claim to
the third dimension. Rather, his paintings of colorful canyons, teeming
coral reefs, and, above all, brilliant birds, emphasize hard-edged
simplicity. Many of the critters observed in his early life in West
Virginia, where he found joy exploring the Appalachian foothills,
appear in his paintings.

countless things needing to be identified, ordered, and arranged—be they

Barbara Takenaga arranges the simple
components of her dense, abstract paintings
into stunningly detailed compositions that
undulate, radiate, and recede in seemingly
infinite space. Her dazzling repetition of forms
suggests the inherent yet sometimes incomprehensible logic of
both the cosmic and the cellular, while spontaneous twists and
puckers preserve the elements of wonder and surprise. Crisp,
saturated color defines each discrete element in the tightly woven,
tessellated work. Barbara Takenaga’s work is in the permanent
collections of prominent museums throughout the United States.
When the trove of Achilles Rizzoli’s renderings were “discovered” in 1990, the works of this nearly forgotten artist showed
the usual effects of neglect and age. But they were clearly grand
visions from a keen draftsman. Rizzoli (American, 1896–1981)
secretly created tributes to friends and family in architectural
representations that developed an elaborately mapped expo.
Few attended his annual living-room exhibitions displaying
these tributes, but many who did were also honored with their
own finely crafted representational works that proclaimed his
deep appreciation for their kindness. Most never knew he had
personified them in striking architectural form.

Mark Rothko (American, b. Russia, 1903–1970), a titan among modern painters,
said that the subject matter of his paintings was the range of human emotion.
His extraordinary achievement was the communication of tragedy and elation
through forms reduced to starkest simplicity—oftentimes a pair of rectangles.
Born Marcus Rothkowitz in a Latvian Jewish community, the artist emigrated to
the United States at the age of ten. He established himself as a leader among New
York’s artistic avant-garde in the late 1940s and was central to the development
of postwar abstract painting in the United States.
Mark Rothko is best known for the luminous paintings
he made in the 1950s and 1960s. These classic works are
characterized by their soft-edged rectangular forms and
broad, thin washes of color. Rothko worked on large canvases,
but he felt that the scale was intimate, establishing a close
physical relationship with the viewer to invite contemplation
and spiritual communion.

Nature is the starting point for Wolf Kahn’s brilliant

come second.” Kahn emigrated from war-torn

early works, but over the last fifty years he has

fusing representation and abstraction—displayed

Beginning with the Civil War and throughout his career, Winslow
Homer (1836–1910) insightfully recorded the sweeping panorama
of American life. Homer’s dynamic compositions and strong sense
of design, color, and light imbued his subjects with a psychological
truthfulness that was unprecedented in American art and introduced
a new realism into what had been an overly sentimental tradition

Georgia O’Keeffe
Georgia O’Keeffe (American, 1887–1986) painted voluptuous
petals and other natural forms with a style that merged realism
with abstraction. O’Keeffe shunned the prevalent European
ideals she found constraining—a move that would lead to her
worldwide popular and critical acclaim and eventually center her
within American modernism. Born in Wisconsin, she moved to
New York at a young age and began painting her now iconic
oversized flowers. O’Keeffe later became enamored with New
Mexico and its skies, hills, weathered bones, and adobe homes,
and moved there permanently.

The Reading Woman
A painting of a woman immersed in a book suggests a story of its
own: Is she stealing a moment from daily routine to indulge her
love of literature? Is this book the one that will change her life?
Artists have for centuries been fascinated with the quiet grace of a
woman reading—a beautiful enigma, her rapt stillness belies the
distances she has traveled in the pages of her book.

With the influence of his wife, Karin Bergöö, Carl Larsson produced the
light, bright paintings, modest in scale and subject, that set him apart
as one of Sweden’s most beloved artists. Larsson (1853–1919) delighted
in documenting his family’s idyllic country life in loving, lighthearted
images. Through the paintings in this calendar we can watch Esbjörn,
their youngest son of eight children, grow up; witness comfortable
moments in and around their riverside cottage, Lilla Hyttnäs; and, in
one, glimpse the artist himself as he paints his charming scenes of
domestic bliss.

Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862–1918) has been characterized as a radical agent
of change who defied artistic convention and produced works of startling
power, symbolism, and eroticism. His large-scale public works were not
widely popular, yet he never lacked for respect, awards, and commissions.
Portraits of women from Vienna’s social elite would come to dominate his
career, but Klimt also produced daring landscapes. This calendar’s selection
offers alluring portraits as well as mesmerizing landscapes.

Joseph Mallord William Turner (British, 1775–1851) took up landscape painting
in part to fund his Royal Academy education. Although a Londoner all his life,
Turner enjoyed plein-air sketching near the River Avon in Bristol while still in

Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954), the supreme colorist of the

only to reject classical representation, relying instead on flat
areas of vivid color and uneven smears of paint in his portraits,

Excluded from annual exhibitions of the staid
Académie des Beaux-Arts, and ignored by the press, a
group of artists living in Paris in the 1860s broke from
tradition. And rather than adopting the Académie’s
conservative painting techniques, they let their colors
and brushstrokes run unbridled, attempting to capture
a moment’s intimacy in the ever-changing play of light
and the candid expressions of human emotion. This

by Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Alfred Sisley, Claude
Monet, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, Auguste Renoir,

Forgoing the depictions of historic and mythological
scenes favored by the Académie des Beaux-Arts, the
impressionists instead painted plein-air landscapes
and views of common people engaged in everyday
life. This calendar reproduces impressionist paintings
by Henri Rousseau, Vincent van Gogh, Berthe Morisot,
Mary Cassatt, Alfred Sisley, Edgar Degas, Edouard
Manet, Edouard Vuillard, Camille Pissarro, Claude
Monet, and Auguste Renoir.
A central figure among the French Impressionists,
Claude Monet (1840–1926) devoted himself to
capturing on canvas the nuances of light’s play in
nature. Sometimes working on multiple canvases
simultaneously to capture light before it shifted,
Monet often found his self-appointed task incredibly
frustrating. Yet he produced some of modern art’s
greatest paintings and inspired his contemporaries.
Among Monet’s twelve oil paintings reproduced
here are Grainstack (Snow Effect); La Japonaise
(Camille Monet in Japanese Costume); Grand Canal,
Venice; and Morning on the Seine, near Giverny.

The British Columbia wilderness and the First Nations culture
formed the two great themes of Emily Carr’s work. Through
her landscapes and haunting depictions of totems, she is
considered the premier painter of Canada’s Pacific coast.
Tom Thomson (Canadian, 1877–1917) loved the rough country of
northern Ontario. His exploratory artistic style and his appreciation
of the wilderness helped shape the style of the Group of Seven.
Many of Thomson’s oils were executed in a few hours, but they
remain masterpieces of modern art.

quiet moments, usually outdoors with family and four-legged companions, and
have a timeless quality imbued with many layers of significance.

Approximately 2,500 years ago, Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment
while meditating beneath a fig tree in Bodh Gaya, India, after having spent years
in reflection. He became the Buddha, or “awakened one,” and his teachings
about the path to attaining wisdom and compassion spread from his native
India throughout Asia. Each culture imbued the practice of Buddhism with its
own identity, and devotional art was created wherever the religion was adopted.
These twelve mandalas hail from Tibet, Nepal, Japan, Mongolia, and China.
Chao Shao-an (1905–1998) came of age at a tumultuous time in
Chinese history, as the Qing dynasty ended after more than two
and a half centuries of rule. Meanwhile, the country’s first formal
art schools were founded. Chao became a leader and endeavored,
like his masters, “to learn from Nature but be inspired by inner
sensibility.” He cofounded the Lingnan Art Studio in Guangzhou
(Canton) to teach and promote this vital, fresh approach.
This calendar’s paintings are characteristic of Chao’s free, fluid

Katsushika Hokusai spent more than seventy years making art during late
Edo-period Japan, constantly reinventing himself. In his old age, his most
celebrated period, he called himself Gakyo Rojin, or “Old Man Mad about
Painting.” Hokusai’s depictions of nature are treasured for the fine skill they
exhibit as well as for their distillation of nature in a precise moment. His mastery
is found everywhere in his paintings and prints: in a still lake or cresting wave,
the gentle wind or the slanting rain, the resting crane or the diving kingfisher.
Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797–1858) was born, lived, and died
in Edo (Tokyo), which by the eighteenth century was the world’s
largest city. During this period, a newly prosperous middle class
developed a love for richly colored woodblock prints of landscapes,
flowers, and scenes of daily life. Hiroshige’s extraordinary woodblock-print series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo ranks among
the greatest achievements of Japanese art. Issued between 1856
and 1858, the 118 woodblock scenes of mid-nineteenth-century
Tokyo remain a precious record of its appearance and spirit.

by European impressionism and incorporated Western elements into
his paintings of traditional Japanese scenes. As he traveled throughout
Japan he sketched using watercolors, later transformed into woodblock prints. Shin hanga prints were affordable because they could be
mass-produced, and they became popular among Western collectors.
The sweet curvature of branch and blossom balances the strong lift of mountain
and birch trunk in the landscapes of Kazuyuki Ohtsu (Japanese, b. 1935). In compositions that communicate a deep feeling of equipoise, the artist conveys unshakable
faith in the union of human beings and the natural world. He takes us to parks and
still waters, occasionally rural villages and temples. When human figures appear,
they are small and anonymous. His colors are elemental, deep, and true.

In the Japanese haiku poem, as in life,
there is a pause, a shift, in which the poet
celebrates sensory awareness of the season,
perhaps suggested by the scent of red
plum blossoms or the silence of a snowcovered meadow. Such seasonal allusions
emphasize the essence of haiku: nature and
its ephemeral beauty. This calendar pairs
twelve woodcuts with haiku rendered in Japanese
calligraphy, romanji transliteration, and English translation.

William Morris (English, 1834–1896) wrote poetry and
fiction, helped found the socialist movement in England,
and designed typefaces, fabrics, and wallpaper. The
gorgeous floral and foliate wallpaper designs in this

Popular during the latter part of the
Edo period, Japanese decorative
papers known as chiyo-gami were
often based on exquisite kimono
patterns. Designers gleaned inspiration from literature, theater, and
cultural themes, and their work reflected a deep reverence for nature and
an intrinsic admiration of beauty. The vibrant colors and refined compositions were put to fashionable use in handcrafting household accessories,
paper dolls, origami boxes, gift wrap, and stationery. Popular to this day,
twelve of these papers fill this calendar.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh created decorative complements to the buildings he designed, employing a holistic
approach to interiors and urging fellow architects to do
the same. A leading figure in the Art Nouveau and Arts
and Crafts movements, Mackintosh turned to fine fabrics
after retiring from architecture and worked alongside his
wife, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. He sold his

By the mid nineteenth century, concerns about traffic congestion
in central London led to the creation of the Underground, today
the third-busiest metro system in Europe. Artists and designers
produced posters inviting the public to explore the Underground’s
many destinations, both within London and beyond the city—
historical sites, quiet gardens, royal parks, theatrical events, quaint
villages, and more. Soon the Underground was established as an
important patron of the arts and an acknowledged leader in the
field of poster publicity. Here are twelve colorful reproductions
of posters that once drew crowds to the Underground.

Under pressure, Alphonse Mucha launched a new graphic form in December
1894. The actress Sarah Bernhardt commissioned a poster for a new play,
giving Mucha less than a week to design it, print it, and get it on the street.
Not only did he meet his deadline, but his Gismonda poster introduced Art
Nouveau to the world. Famous overnight, Mucha (Czech, 1860–1939) worked
prolifically in his self-invented genre, enjoying broad commercial success
without ever getting rich. Twelve of his works, including theater posters and
champagne, chocolate, and biscuit advertisements, fill this calendar.

industry. For over twenty years, the artisans at Motawi Tileworks
have carried on in the Arts and Crafts tradition, handcrafting art

Louis Comfort Tiffany’s superb craftsmanship, artistic innovation,
and reverence for natural beauty combined to make him one of
the most influential designers of the past two hundred years.
Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) revived the art of making stained

Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1867–1959) aspired to place a
series of semi-abstract compositions on the covers of Liberty
magazine, formed in the likeness of the Saturday Evening Post.
None were used by the weekly—Wright’s drawings seem to
have been a bit too daring—but the avant-garde designs have
become decorative elements in projects through the years,
from rugs to an art glass mural and more.
Here, twenty color photographs and descriptions of designs by Frank
Lloyd Wright join quotations from the prolific architect. Also included are
an essay about Wright; fifty-seven weekly grids and thirteen full-page
monthly grids; double-page spreads of 2016 and 2017 yearly grids; a full

During a career lasting into seven decades, Frank Lloyd
Wright (1867–1959) not only designed buildings, he drew
them with legendary skill. Wright designed all types of
structures, from civic centers and cinemas to his many
Prairie-style homes, and often the furnishings within.
Considered by many to be America’s greatest architect,
he transformed his field and infused his works with the
spirit of organic architecture. The twelve images in this
calendar, alongside quotations, reveal the tremendous
range of Wright’s imagination.
Today many of Frank Lloyd Wright’s
architectural concepts and principles are
everywhere, so embedded in the cultural
canon they’re easily taken for granted. The
twelve color photographs in this calendar
remind us of his genius. Relevant historical

Susan Seddon Boulet
Susan Seddon Boulet (American, b. Brazil, 1941–1997) gracefully
traversed the paths between fairy tale, myth, and spirituality in
her visionary paintings. At first she painted the fantastical—jesters,
knights, mermaids, magicians, dragons—but after the death of
her husband she turned to the mystical. In pastel, ink, and pencil,
Boulet layered colors into dreamlike beings. These works encompass
her wealth of respect for worldwide traditions and hang in
collections worldwide.

With inspired vision and a skilled hand, Susan Seddon
Boulet created art that speaks powerfully to the human
spirit. Boulet was a student of worldwide spiritual
traditions, and her paintings of goddesses—female deities
once supreme throughout the world’s cultures but over
millennia trivialized in favor of male gods—recall the
creative and regenerative power within us all. This
calendar’s twelve ethereal Boulet images bring forth the
sacred nature of the goddess in her many forms. Each
work is accompanied by informative text about the
goddess depicted.
Shamanism—the oldest of religious systems—demands from its
practitioner the agility to transcend the boundaries of space and
time, the sympathy to consult with the animal and wind deities, the
courage to venture into inconceivable realms, and the stamina to
bring back the wisdom he or she has sought there. Susan Seddon
Boulet took a strong personal interest in shamanism, charting the
course of her spiritual journey and creating images that speak to
the multidimensional space in which the shaman travels. Excerpts
from Native American poems, statements, ceremonies, prayers,
and songs accompany this calendar’s twelve paintings.

Y516 ISBN 978-0-7649-6978-2
$14.99 US ($17.99 Canada)
Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.
In rugged hillsides and vibrant coastal towns, ruined medieval fortresses and
castles still in service, it’s clear Scotland’s beauty endures. There’s the grand
Inveraray Castle, its pristine gardens and estate still drawing visitors, and the
cube-like tower of Threave Castle, all that’s left of the fourteenth-century
structure built by Archibald the Grim. There are the wild lands, still lochs, and
thrashing coastlines across Scotland. Excerpts from the works of renowned
Scottish poets and philosophers or quotations about the country and its
people accompany this calendar’s photographs.

Sea Otters
Photographs by Tom and Pat Leeson
Y492 ISBN 978-0-7649-6993-5
$14.99 US ($17.99 Canada)
Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.
Endearingly awkward on land, sea otters spend nearly all their time in the
water, floating in the northern Pacific kelp beds that shelter their favorite
food: the purple sea urchin. They are protected around the world and widely
recognized as beneficial to the coastal ecosystems they help balance. This
calendar’s photographs highlight their familiar mammalian traits—dutiful
grooming, dedication to their offspring, and a somewhat precocious nature.

A Cat in the Garden
Photographs by Del Greger
Y566 ISBN 978-0-7649-7081-8
$14.99 US ($17.99 Canada)
Wall calendar 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.
First domesticated approximately four thousand years ago, the
cat now rules supremely over many a verdant domain, posing
and pouncing, lolling and strolling. The regal cat, immortalized
in poetry and prose, sculpture and painting, is just as likely to be
found ambushing an unsuspecting bug or puzzling over the
strange behaviors of nearby humans. This calendar includes
twelve photographs by Del Greger, paired with timeless
quotations by artists and writers about bemusing feline vagaries.

Impressionist Claude Monet—master gardener, horticulturist, and painter—
spent decades creating a tapestry of hues and textures in the flowers and
foliage surrounding his Giverny home, his “quiet corner of nature.” Elizabeth
Murray fell in love with Monet’s gardens on her first visit to the Giverny estate in
1984. She volunteered for the restoration and returns regularly to record the
daily and seasonal transformations. Murray’s knowledge of the grounds informs
her vivid photographs and descriptions in this calendar.
