Auction Ground Rules and Procedures
Registration
Upon entering the auction, you will receive your bidder number. Use the bidder number assigned to you
for all silent and live auction bidding. Usually couples have one bidder number, unless you requested
separate numbers when you purchased your tickets.
Silent Auction
The Silent Auction opens at 4:00. It is divided into three sections. Each section will close at a different time according to the Auction Schedule on the Welcome page of this catalog. The minimum bid and
minimum raise for each item is shown on the bid sheet for that item. To be valid, bids must be legible and
comply with stated minimum bids and raises.
To place a bid, print your bidder number with your bid amount on the bid sheet. Where there is a single
item listed for sale, the highest value bid entered prior to the section closing will be the winning bid.
Silent Auction
Please note this bidding process for multiple-winner parties, etc.:
Where there is more than one place available for the item being offered, for example if the item is a dinner for 6, write your bidder number and bid amount for each place you wish to win on the lines provided.
The winners of the 6 places will be the 6 highest bidders. Each winning bidder will pay the amount
they have bid though it may differ from the amount paid by another winning bidder. When there is a tie
for the same bid amount, the earlier bid wins. To change your bid, do not erase or cross out. You must
write a new bid on a new line.

The bidding ended at this point. Winners are marked with *. Bidder number 14 raised their bids once,
but did not win two seats. Bidder 14 has the option to delete the single seat from his/her invoice. This
can be requested before the invoice is actually paid. Five winners would attend the dinner.
Live Auction
To bid during the Live Auction, hold your bidder number up and toward the auctioneer. The Auctioneer will
acknowledge your bid. When the gavel goes down on an item, it is sold and the Auctioneer will announce
the winning bid(s) and winning bidder number(s). The Live Auction will continue until all items are sold.
If a group is bidding on a single item, please designate one bidder to place your combined bid.
Checkout, Payments and Early Departures
Checkout will begin only after all Silent and Live Auction items have been recorded. Checkout volunteers
will provide an invoice listing the items you have won, their prices and the total due. For your convenience we gladly accept cash, check, Discover, MasterCard and Visa.

David Novak offers an evening program of storytelling titled “The Separation of Heaven and Earth.” In his eclectic
fashion, David Novak moves from personal anecdote into myth, poetry, and current events as he explores the splitting
of Heaven and Earth, land and sky, husband and wife, body and soul. The program will be held at UUCA in the Sanctuary, and will conclude with homemade desserts and coffee in Sandburg Hall. Friday, January 22, 2016 at 8:00.

Slate Rock Shuttle Hike for 12
A moderate hike up Slate Rock above Mills River, where we will enjoy a spectacular view at the top, mountain creeks,
and a couple of small waterfalls. Although the elevation gain is about 1,000 feet, the trail meanders gradually uphill,
and there are lots of switchbacks on the way up, so it is not that strenuous a climb. Spring wildflowers should also be
out, and we will also try to identify as many as possible along the trail. We will do a car shuttle, so as to avoid the walk
back on the road, making the hike about 5.5 – 6 miles. Please be sure you have the physical ability to do this hike
before signing up! We will meet at UUCA and carpool about 1 hour to the trailhead. See auction display table for other
details. Saturday, May 14, 2016; rain date May 21, 2016.
Available to 12 attendees.

Panthertown Valley Hike for 12
One of my very favorite areas to hike in WNC is Panthertown Valley, a hidden gem near Lake Toxaway and Cashiers.
Panthertown Valley has been called the “Yosemite of the East”, with much diversity of areas in which to hike—a flat
valley floor surrounded by plutons (exposed rock outcroppings like Looking Glass Rock); a variety of microclimates;
and best of all, about 16 different named waterfalls within the valley itself. The hike itself will be difficult; the 5-6 miles
may feel like 8-9 miles because some trails wander through rhododendron thickets that the hardy hiker must negotiate
by climbing up, down and around. We will proceed at a moderate pace, tentatively trying to experience 3-4 of the waterfalls, plus the gorgeous view from the top of Little Green Mountain, stopping for lunch (bring your own) somewhere
scenic along the way. Please be sure that you are physically able to do this hike before signing up! See auction display
table for other details. Saturday, June 4, 2016; rain date June 11, 2016.
Available to 12 attendees.
Fixed Price: $15.00

Lemon Gap to Max Patch Shuttle Hike for 15
A moderate 6-mile one-way hike on the Appalachian Trail up to Max Patch for a 360-degree spectacular view of the
surrounding mountains! Although the elevation gain is more than 2,400 feet, most of the trail is not especially difficult
as it meanders gradually up through hardwood forests and rhododendron glens, only climbing steeply near the top.
We should see some spring wildflowers in bloom along the way, and will hike along and cross some scenic mountain
streams. We will probably run into some AT thru-hikers as well, as this is the time of year they start coming through
the area. This is a shuttle hike, which means we will leave at least one vehicle at each end of the trail. Please be sure you
have the physical ability to do this hike before signing up! See auction display table for other details. Saturday, April 23,
2016; rain date April 30, 2016. Available to 15 attendees.
Fixed Price: $15.00
