FootscrayFood Guide Lauren Wambach Picks from the Footscray
There is natural beauty too. The majestic Footscray
Park is one of the largest Edwardian parks in Australia
and Newells Paddock Wetland Reserve is considered
an important inner city conservation park. The
Maribyrnong River attracts birdlife and even the
occasional wayward seal.
There is a huge arts scene here with Footscray the
base for major arts organisations including Footscray
Community Arts Centre, the Snuff Puppets, Women’s
Circus and the Big West Festival. There are eight art
galleries in town and a full calendar of events and
festivals.
With a proudly multicultural
community and recipes straight
from the homeland, Footscray
offers up some of the most
authentic cuisines you will find in
Australia.
Home to the Western Bulldogs AFL team, 20,000
students studying at two Victoria University campuses
and a major hospital, Footscray is vibrant suburb with
a passionate community.
Most of Footscray’s food outlets cook with produce
sourced direct from the local Footscray Market,
wholesale fish market or specialty Vietnamese
produce centre, Little Saigon Market, giving the
Footscray food scene a consistently high standard in
quality and freshness.
With over 135 different cultural
communities living here, Footscray
is renowned for its food diversity
and fresh produce markets.
Vietnamese food is
a specialty here with
everything from street
style food, iced coffee, pork rolls,
pho, and traditional dishes from
each end of Vietnam on offer.
Ethiopian food (African cuisine)
is also a specialty, with Footscray
hosting the highest concentration
of restaurants in the country ready
to introduce you to this unique
cuisine.
Sitting on the western city fringe
and flanked by the Maribyrnong
River, Footscray has a rich
Indigenous, industrial, culturally
diverse and creative past that has
shaped its unique personality.
Vegetarians will love
Ethiopian food. Try the
Vegetarian combination:
a sampling of stews with
silverbeet, cabbage, red lentil,
brown lentil, chickpea, carrot
or spiced potato (right).
At left: coffee ceremony at Konjo Ethiopian Restaurant
Coffee beans were discovered in Ethiopia hundreds
of years ago and is an important part of the culture.
Try a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony for a full
sensory experience.
Wat (or wot) is a stew or curry that includes meat or
a vegetable substitute, such as chickpeas, and served
with a whole egg.
Tibs are plates of sautéed lamb, beef or goat meat,
prepared with onion and chillies. This is a good dish to
try for your first Ethiopian food experience.
From pub grub and the quick lunch,
to fine dining and a cafe brunch,
traditional or the latest trends in
food, Footscray has you covered.
No need for knives and forks, eat
Ethiopian food with your hands
using torn off pieces of injera
bread to pick up food.
Footscray is a foodies’ haven.
Multicultural, fresh and authentic,
Footscray offers a sublime choice of
cuisines and eating options.

pickled fennel and chipotle mayo. White coffee is from
Allpress. Black coffee is by Seven Seeds.

same spot since 1956. They are famed for their Sicilianstyle cakes and cookies, still made faithfully to family
recipes. The cannoli have a cult like following – try the
candied ricotta.

VANAKKAM
Olympic Doughnuts’ battered caravan has been snuggled
up to Footscray Station for over 30 years. The recent
redevelopment saw the van put out to pasture, but the jam
still flows at a purpose built kiosk in the station forecourt.
The hot, crisp doughnuts are carefully filled and sugared to
order. A Footscray institution.
359 Barkly St, 9687 2233Map 1 B4 102
It’s a little ways from central ‘scray, but Vanakkam rewards
those who make the trek. The house special here is biryani.
The chicken variety sees pieces of chook marinated
and cooked in a sealed pot with basmati rice. The result
is fragrant, delicate and delicious, perfect with the
accompanying raita and tangy tamarind sauce.
PHO HUNG VUONG SAIGON
128 Hopkins St, 9689 6002
Map 2 F2 153
Pho Hung Vuong Saigon is shiny and smart, with stellar
pho to match. Not five minutes after ordering, a steaming
bowl of soup will land right under your nose. An order of
sliced beef and chicken pho nabs you a fragrant bowl of
supple rice noodles, wafer-thin rare beef and juicy sliced
chicken breast.
KONJO ETHIOPIAN RESTAURANT
ROTI ROAD
Konjo’s specialty is kitfo – quality beef, very finely chopped
by hand and mixed with spiced butter. Try it lightly cooked,
or more traditionally, raw. There are all the Ethiopian
classics, too, like spiced red lentils or rich lamb curries, plus
traditional coffee for two – or twenty.
Map 2 F2 159
When it comes to fantastic Vietnamese fare, Sapa Hills is
a confident and capable all rounder. The house special is
bun cha Ha Noi – chargrilled pork two ways, served with a
veritable haystack of herbs and a heap of rice vermicelli for
a delicious DIY warm salad. Crunchy, fresh coleslaws are
another standout.
Dive into Sudanese and Egyptian fare at Khartoum Centre.
Use pita bread to delve into ‘foul’, a spiced, dried broad
bean dip topped with crisp crushed felafels and cheese.

variety.
8 BIT

Eateries are sorted into cuisine types, reflecting the vast range of
food on offer. Eateries can be cafes, restaurants, market kiosks
and bakeries – wherever you can find a quick bite, a long lunch or
settle in for a special occasion banquet.
Australian fusion describes Western based menus: from the
humble sandwich to pancakes, brioche and premium steak.
International fusion includes menus that deviate from a nonWestern based cuisine, like Indonesian/Chinese or Ethiopian/
Australian combinations.
African cuisine encompasses Ethiopian, Eritrean, Somalian and
Sudanese food.
Middle Eastern cuisine includes Turkish kebab houses plus Iraqi
and Persian specialty cuisines.
Look out for the wine symbol in the listings to find your local bars
and pubs. Bakeries have a breadstick symbol.
