SPOTLIGHT
THE LADWP
BLOOD DRIVE
Thursday, June 27, 2013
from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.,
A-Level in the JFB Cafeteria
Conference Center
Call the Employees’ Association
at (213) 367-3146 to make
an appointment.
Blood is needed for emergencies and for people who have cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell, anemia and other illnesses.
Some people need regular blood transfusions to live.
Imagine if giving blood was part of everyone’s life. Something you did on a regular basis, like eating at your favorite
restaurant. What kind of difference would that make? For nearly 5 million people who receive blood transfusions every
year, your donation can make the difference between life and death.
TOP 5 REASONS PEOPLE DON’T GIVE BLOOD
1. I don’t like needles / I am scared of needles / I am afraid
to give blood
Nearly everyone feels that way at first. However, most
donors will tell you that you feel only a slight initial pinch,
and 7-10 minutes later, you are finished and headed for the
canteen. If you take the time (and courage) to make one
donation, you’ll wonder why you ever hesitated.
2. I am too busy
The entire process takes about an hour, and the ACTUAL
BLOOD DONATION TIME IS ONLY 7-10
MINUTES. If you stop to think that an hour of your time
could mean a lifetime for a premature baby, someone with
cancer undergoing chemotherapy, or someone who’s had an
accident, you might decide that you can make the time to
give the gift of life.
3. No-one ever asked me… I didn’t realize my blood was
needed
Consider yourself asked! There is simply no other way to
supply the blood needs of hospital patients but for the
generous donations of people like you. Every two seconds
someone in America needs blood. More than 38,000
donations are needed every day in communities across the
U.S.
4. I already gave this year
You can give every 56 days. Many donors give 5 times a
year!
5. I am afraid I’ll get AIDS
It is not possible to get AIDS by donating blood to the
American Red Cross. A new sterile needle is used for each
donor and discarded afterwards.

WAYS TO BEAT THE HEAT
A summer of enjoyment at special LADWP discounted prices!
How many of us can recall days spent running through
the sprinklers trying desperately to beat the California
heat? Summers in California are a favorite time of year,
the radiant sun brushing your skin, children’s laughter
filling the air as they run free from another school
year accomplished. It is a time of renewal, and a time
to appreciate the child in us all. What better way to
accomplish both than to head down to one of California’s
water parks? Water rides meant to tickle your tummy and
cool your skin await you and your children everyday of the
summer.
If you feel daring there are rides such as The Abyss,
Honolulu Half Pipe, The Black Hole or the death defying
Pacific Spin. However, if you find that you are more of the
relaxation type then try the Lizard Lagoon or the Kiddie
Congo. Regardless of the intensity of your fun meter, there
is a vast array of rides that each park offers.

1 Consult with a tax professional regarding the deductibility of interest. Loan requires two separate applications, subject to two separate approvals.
2 Rate may increase after settlement.
3 Interest-Only payments pay only the accrued interest on the loan each month, and do not reduce the principal balance. When fully amortizing payments become due, monthly payments could
increase substantially above the initial Interest-Only payment amount. Please read all product disclosures carefully for complete details of loan features. A pre-payment penalty may apply. If a
reduced documentation option is used to qualify for financing, this may result in higher costs and/or an increased interest rate.

LADWP Table Tennis Club opens play in
the Los Angeles Table Tennis Federation
The LADWP Table Tennis Club (DWPTTC) has two teams
participating in the Los Angeles Table Tennis Federation
(LATTF), a league of table tennis teams that features some of
the finest club players in Southern California. The DWPTTC
is sponsored annually by the Donor’s Welfare Plan which also
supports several clubs in the department. The two teams that are
competing for LADWP are the KillaWatts and Mega Hurtz. The
KillaWatts compete in Division 2B. Their members are LADWP
Table Tennis Club president and team captain Paul Sierra, Miguel
Munoz, Paul Pau, Roger Boden and Tom Nguyen. Mega Hurtz
competes in Divsion 3 and features team captain Wing Tam, Eric
Botero, Chih-hong Hsieh, Jaime Fidello and Michael Cheung.
Mega Hurtz opened the season on March 24 losing a tight match
to High Five who plays out of the Gilbert Table Tennis Center
in the Miracle Mile area. High Five had as their ace a 9 year old
prodigy who attacked with devastating precision. He was the
difference as High Five nipped Mega Hurtz 3-2. Eric Botero led
the way with a singles win and paired with Chih-hong Hsieh to
take a doubles win and account for their two points. On April
7, Mega Hurtz again suffered a tough 4-1 loss to Ararat B out
of Glendale. The closest opportunity for a league win narrowly
escaped Mega Hurtz on April 13 against the San Fernando Valley’s
Orange Crush. The teams were tied overall at 2 wins a piece. The
stage was set for a showdown with Jaime Fidello working to a 2-2
tie with the fifth and final game remaining to decide which team
would secure the league win. Fidello was just edged by the Crush’s
Ken Gonzales to take the final and deciding match at 3-2.
The KillaWatts had a very tough opening draw against the
league’s top seed in the Grace Lin Table Tennis Club on March 30.

GLTTC features some of the nation’s top juniors. Paul Sierra
started with a win over power hitter June Lim with an assortment of
clever serves and timely blocks putting the KillaWatts up 1-0. That
was the only win of the day as the KillWatts went down 4-1.
The KillaWatts came through on April 14 defeating the
previously 2nd place Ararat A from Glendale 3-2. With the win,
the KillaWatts moved into a tie for 2nd in LATTF play. Sierra
opened with a convincing win. Roger Boden and Miguel Munoz
teamed up masterfully to pull off a fantastic doubles win. The
match included some fierce rallies and blistering smashes. The
KillaWatts only needed one more win to seal the overall match
after the doubles win staked them to a 2-1 lead. Sierra came up
with the deciding win with a set score of 3-1 win over tha Ararat
number one seed, Rolland Garabidian. The overall final tally had
the KillaWatts over Ararat A, 3-2. The KillaWatts are now 1-1 in
league play.
The KillaWatts get a rematch with Grace Lin TTC at their club
in El Monte at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 4. They then visit
The Invincibles at Robofit TTC in Lomita on Saturday May 11
at 5:00 PM. Mega Hurtz once again sees the prodigy on April
27 at SPiN Standard at 12:30 PM followed by a match against
Ararat B on Sunday, May 12 at 2:00 p.m. in Glendale. The teams
need your support. Come and watch the action!
Both teams use the new, upscale table tennis nightclub SPiN
Standard as their home venue on Saturday and Sunday
afternoons. It is co-owned by actress Susan Sarandon. SPiN
Standard is located on the second floor of LA Standard Hotel on
6th and Flower.

WAFER PUDDING
INGREDIENTS
2 cups fat-free milk
1 small (4-serving) package sugar-free fat-free instant vanilla
pudding mix
24 reduced-fat vanilla round wafer cookies
(recommended: Reduced Fat Nilla)
2 medium bananas, sliced
Fat-free whipped topping (thawed from frozen), optional
DIRECTIONS
Combine milk with pudding mix in a bowl. Beat with an
electric mixer or a whisk for 2 minutes, or until thoroughly
blended. Set aside.
In a 9-inch square baking pan, arrange a layer of wafers,
flat sides down, and then top with a layer of banana slices.
Continue alternating layers until all of the wafers and
banana slices are in the dish.
Top the dish with the pudding and let it seep down in
between the wafer and banana layers. Cover and refrigerate
for 2 to 3 hours. If desired, add whipped topping before
serving.
SWEET-AND-SPICY
BABY BACK RIBS
INGREDIENTS
3 1-pound racks baby back pork ribs
Juice of 1 lemon
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup lager-style beer
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
8 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon chipotle chile powder
1 cup Thai sweet chile sauce (such as Mae Ploy)
2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup rice vinegar (not seasoned)
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Put the ribs meat-side
down on a cutting board. Insert a paring knife between the
membrane and the bones on one end of each rack, then loosen
the membrane and pull it off. Rub the ribs with the lemon
juice and sprinkle evenly with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon
pepper. Place the ribs bone-side down in a large roasting pan,
then add the beer. Cover tightly with foil, transfer to the oven
and roast until the meat pulls away from the bone, about 1
hour. Meanwhile, make the sauce: Melt the butter in a medium
saucepan over medium-high heat; add the garlic and cook,
stirring occasionally, until slightly golden, about 2 minutes. Add
the chile powder and cook 1 minute. Stir in the chile sauce,
brown sugar, vinegar and 1 cup water and bring to a boil. Reduce
the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce
is thickened and reduced by half, about 40 minutes.
Remove the ribs from the oven; increase the temperature to 400
degrees F. Uncover the pan; carefully pour out the cooking liquid.
Stir 1/4 cup cooking liquid into the sauce, then discard the rest
of the liquid. Generously brush the ribs with the sauce. Return
the pan to the oven and continue roasting, uncovered, until the
ribs are golden brown and tender, about 35 minutes.
Transfer the ribs to a cutting board and slice, then return to the
roasting pan. Pour the remaining sauce on top and toss.

Understanding
the Rules
Sudoku is a test of
logic and patience no math is needed.

that the numbers 1
through 9 appear only
once in every vertical
and horizontal column
and every 3x3 minibox. Start by scanning
the columns and rows.
Only one solution is
possible.
