I am currently serving as a Board Member completing my 3rd
term. I have served as CFO, Vice President, and President, each
for 2 years! While I have served as a Board Member we have
added several new benefits and services helping us expand our
assistance to our membership and the community. The old and
new logos, the new look for the Association’s Report and the recently implemented Downed Workers Program are several projects we (Board of Directors) have made happen. I look forward
to continuing to increase the benefits and services now provided

I have always been one for gaining additional opportunities to help
make my work environment a better place both for those around
me and myself. Whether it is being part of an emergency response
team, a safety committee or simply providing minor elements in my
workspace, which make the environment of work more pleasant. By
being directly involved with the board of directors I will be able to
do this on a scale which may benefit the entire Department. It is a
great opportunity to serve all of the employees here.
25 years ago I began my journey here at D.W.P. as an Electrical Craft Helper. I went through our apprentice program
to become an Electrical Distribution Mechanic and then on
to a Senior EDM. Currently, I am an EDM Foreman working as a Pole Spotter. I believe in working hard to achieve
all I can for the employees and to make D.W.P. an even
better place to work and enjoy. I would like the opportunity
to serve and represent our membership in the Employees’
Association to help get the benefits that would help us today
and in the future….

Due to an unexpected incident in my life, it was recently necessary for me to resign from my previous position as a Board member. I’ve now returned to my duties with the same high standards,
diligence and integrity to serve the people around me. I am a
motivator and encourage those I encounter to strive for positions
of leadership. I will be a tremendous asset to the Department and
represent your interests with all of my heart. The investment of
your vote for me will be well worth the effort. Thank you all in
advance for your kindness and generosity.
It has been an honor to serve on the Employees’ Association Board of Directors for the past five years. I am seeking
reelection and asking for your vote to help continue working
on behalf of LADWP employees.
I am a Senior Public Relations Specialist assigned to the
Local Government and Community Relations Business
Unit in the Public Affairs Division. My responsibilities include managing community relations projects, primarily exhibit programs, the Speakers Bureau, and the Owens Valley/
Aqueduct Tours. I also handle media calls, and coordinate
special and charitable events such as the tremendously successful annual Daffodil Days Campaign.

I retired from NJ as a Detective Lieutenant. April 2006, I was
hired by the City of LA as a Background Investigator. August 2010, I was hired as an Investigator assigned to the OSI.

official for the USGA: delivered donated food for my Church:
chaired and participated in many non-profit fund raising committees. I currently have the time and desire to be part of a
benevolent association that helps our less fortunate fellow employees.

My name is Edward Rodgers and I have been with the Department of Water and Power for over 20 years. I had the opportunity to represent you as a board member from July 2006
to June 2009. During that time I served on the Donor Welfare
Committee, the Membership and Rules Committee. I also conducted Docksides representing the Association at the retirement
ceremonies. Should I be elected, I will work diligently to see that
the Water section has a voice in all board decisions.

SICKLE CELL DISEASE
FOUNDATION OF CA
Since 1957, the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California
has provided programs, services and activities for individuals
and families. The mission of the SCDFC is “to provide education and life enhancing programs and services to individuals
with sickle cell disease, to broaden public awareness about sickle
cell disease and to promote medical research to ultimately find a
cure.”
What is Sickle Cell Disease? Sickle cell disease, also known
as sickle cell anemia, is inherited. People who have the disease inherit two copies of the sickle cell gene—one from each
parent. The gene codes for production of an abnormal hemoglobin. If a person inherits only one copy of the sickle cell

gene, he or she will have sickle cell trait. People who have
sickle cell trait do not have the disease, but they carry one
of the genes that causes it. Similar to people who have sickle
cell disease, people with sickle cell trait can pass the gene to
their children.
In the United States, sickle cell disease affects an estimated
70,000 to 100,000 people, the majority of whom are African
Americans. All states screen newborns for sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease occurs in approximately one out of every
500 African American births and one out of every 36,000
Hispanic American births. In addition, about 2 million people in the United States have sickle cell trait.

Even if Dad’s not the absent-minded-professor type,
he’ll surely appreciate getting this rustic, pocket-size
notebook for Father’s Day. (First to-do item: Thank kids
by taking them out for ice cream!)
A GRATE GIFT FOR DAD
This clever trio is a tasty way to honor the King of the
Grill on Father’s Day.
INGREDIENTS
MATERIALS
Three sheets of plain letter-size thin paper
Hole punch
INSTRUCTIONS:

letter-size paper in half
lengthwise. Fold the two
sets of three sheets in half.

time, punch two holes 3/4inch in from the fold and
the side.
A Pad for Dad - Step 2 Cut two pieces of thin cardboard
the same size as the folded white paper, then trim about
1/8-inch from the short ends. Cut a 4 1/4- by 11-inch piece
from a brown paper bag, then use glue stick to adhere it to
the two cardboard pieces, leaving a small gap between them,
as shown. Punch four holes 3/4-inch in from the gap and the
side.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.
To make a batch of 12, place liners in a muffin pan,
oil them, and fill them two thirds full of your favorite
brownie batter, then bake according to the recipe
directions. Let the brownies cool.
2.
In a small bowl, mix one or two drops of black food
coloring with 1/4 cup white frosting. Transfer the
frosting to a ziplock bag and snip a small section from
the corner. Pipe grate lines onto each brownie and let
them set for 20 minutes. Add embers with a sprinkle of
orange sugar.
3.
Prepare the grill food as instructed below and press it in
place atop each brownie.
Kebabs = A caramel cream and red, yellow, and green candy
fruit slices, cut into small pieces + toothpick skewers
Pork chop = two thirds of a caramel cream, molded with
fingers + black food coloring, applied with a toothpick
Hot dogs = Hot Tamales candies + black food coloring,
applied with a toothpick

3RD ANNUAL TROUT
DERBY REPORT
For the third year in a row the DWP Anglers Club successfully
organized and staged a trout fishing derby for DWP family
members and friends. You didn’t know that the DWP has an
Anglers Club? You didn’t know that there is a DWP trout
derby? These are common questions that I’ll address in a bit.
As for the Trout Derby it was held at the Santa Ana River Lakes
on January 22nd. We had over 120 DWP family and friends
angling for great prizes and tasty trout. It was a tough day of
fishing but luckily we had a great carne asada shore lunch to
keep spirits high. At the end of the day prizes were awarded to
the 2 top fish in both an adult and child division. We also had a
great raffle with lots of fishy prizes for the participants. I had a
great day as usual but this year was even more meaningful since
I was able to fish with my 2 year old son for the first time.

INGREDIENTS
24 (3.5-ounce) ice-cream sandwiches, unwrapped
6 medium bananas, peeled and thinly sliced
1 (12.25-ounce) jar hot-fudge sauce
1 (10-ounce) jar maraschino cherries,
drained and finely chopped
1 (8-ounce) package milk chocolate covered toffee bits, divided
1 (12.25-ounce) jar butterscotch ice-cream topping
1 (8-ounce) container frozen nondairy whipped topping,
thawed
DIRECTIONS
Line a 13 by 9-inch baking pan with heavy-duty aluminum foil.
Place half of ice-cream sandwiches evenly over bottom of
pan, completely covering bottom, cutting sandwiches to fit,
if necessary. Top evenly with banana slices. Pour hot fudge
sauce over bananas. Top with cherries and 1/2 of the toffee bits
and pour butterscotch evenly on top. Layer with remaining
ice cream sandwiches and spread whipped topping over
sandwiches; sprinkle with remaining toffee bits.
Cover and freeze for at least 4 hours. Remove from pan, using
foil handles. Cut into squares and serve.

NICOISE PLATTER
INGREDIENTS
4 lemons, zested and juiced
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup Dijon mustard
4 garlic cloves, minced
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 pounds skin-on fresh salmon fillets
3 pounds small Yukon gold potatoes
1 1/2 pounds haricots verts, stems removed
3 pounds ripe tomatoes, cut into wedges (6 small tomatoes)
12 hard-cooked eggs, peeled and cut in 1/2
1 bunch watercress or arugula
1/2 pound large green olives, pitted
1 can anchovies, optional
Vinaigrette:
1/4 cup champagne vinegar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup good olive oil
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F.
For the marinade, whisk together the lemon juice, lemon zest, olive oil,
mustard, garlic, 1 1/2 tablespoons salt and 1/2 tablespoon pepper in a
small bowl and set aside.
Place the salmon on a sheet pan that has been covered in aluminum foil,
and drizzle the marinade over the salmon. Allow the salmon to sit for
15 minutes.
Meanwhile, place the potatoes and 2 tablespoons salt in a large pot of
water. Bring the water to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 10
to 15 minutes, until the potatoes are barely tender when pierced with
a knife. Drain the potatoes in a colander, then place the colander with
the potatoes over the empty pot off the heat and cover with a clean, dry
kitchen towel. Leave the potatoes to steam for 15 to 20 minutes, until
tender but firm. When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, slice
them in thick slices and set aside.

Place the salmon in the oven and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, or until it
is almost cooked through. Remove to a plate and allow it to rest for 15
minutes. Remove the skin and break into large pieces.
Blanch the haricots verts in a large pot of boiling salted water for 1 1/2
minutes only. Drain immediately and immerse in a bowl of ice water.
Drain again and set aside.
For the vinaigrette, combine the vinegar, mustard, salt, and pepper.
Slowly whisk in the olive oil to make an emulsion. Set aside.
Arrange the salmon, potatoes, haricots verts, tomatoes, eggs, watercress,
olives and anchovies, if used, on a large flat platter. Drizzle some
vinaigrette over the fish and vegetables and serve the rest in a pitcher on
the side.

DOWNED WORKERS PROGRAM
Your Los Angeles Water and Power Employees’ Association
has introduced a new component of its assistance programs.
As it has done since the early 1930’s, your Water & Power
Employees’ Association added the Downed Workers Program
to complement the benefits offered by the Department and
Local 18.
The new Downed Workers Program will assist family members
of Department employee that requires hospitalization after
sustaining work related injuries. We know that having loved
ones nearby helps recovery, and eases stress during these
difficult times. This program provides instant monetary
disbursements for the cost of family member transportation,
housing, food, and other miscellaneous expenses incurred
while attending to, or visiting the injured employee, with no
expectation of repayment. Upon release from the hospital,
a recovering employee may seek assistance from our other
programs, such as, medical equipment grants and emergency
loans.
We thank the Power System for conceiving this program
and introducing it to the Employees’ Association Board
of Directors in early 2009. Representatives of the Power
Safety & Training Group also met with our Board on several
occasions to develop program guidelines. In November 2009,
the Employees’ Association Board approved the guidelines
and allocated funding for program establishment. In March
2010 program introduction began at quarterly Safety
meetings and in New Employee Orientations. The response
was immediate, and employees generously contributed to the
Donors’ Welfare Plan.
The new Downed Workers Program fulfills our stated mission
of providing assistance to employees and their families.
We should be proud to have programs that help our fellow
employees and the community during difficult times.
Remember, all assistance programs rely on Donors’ Welfare
Plan funding, so we seek your support in promoting this
program and encouraging employees to contribute.
