JUNIOR BLIND OF AMERICA
When Judy and Arturo Loera’s son, Antonio was born, the
doctors knew something was very wrong. Their baby was
transferred to three hospitals in two days and had five surgeries in two months. They soon leaned that Antonio was missing about 15 percent of his brain and that it was doubtful
he would ever do anything more than breathe, sleep and eat.
Indeed, for the first year, Antonio would just lie there, barely
moving. Knowing they couldn’t give up hope, Judy and Arturo began searching for therapists to help their son make
progress. Thankfully, one of Antonio’s therapists recommended Junior Blind’s Infant & Early Childhood Program.
Judy and Arturo had long suspected there could be something wrong with their son’s vision and were relieved to
find someone who would listen to their concerns. During
the family’s first session with Junior Blind, a vision specialist named Diana noticed that Antonio was having trouble
focusing his eyes. Diana immediately made an appointment
for him to see an optometrist and even accompanied Judy to
the doctor to help ask questions. Shortly after, Antonio was

diagnosed as visually impaired and was prescribed glasses to
help strengthen his eyesight.
“Since Antonio has been a part of Junior Blind,” Judy says,
“it has been like night and day. Between his glasses and the
weekly vision stimulation activities he receives from Diana,
our son is now able to do things that other toddlers do. He
plays with toys, smiles at others and is even showing signs
that he may be able to walk soon.”
Even more, the Infant & Early Childhood Program has
allowed Judy and Arturo to connect with other parents of
children with visual impairments. They most recently hosted
a play date in their home for nearly a dozen Junior Blind
families and shared how much they loved the camaraderie.
Remarks Judy, “No one else in our family has a child with a
disability, so it has been hard not to feel alone. With Junior
Blind, my husband and I finally have somewhere to turn.”

An easy to prepare but very popular dessert. You can make the jello
in advance and then finish off with the whipped cream, meringue,
and fresh berries.
INGREDIENTS
6 large strawberries hulled
and quartered
1- 3 ounce package
cranberry-raspberry jello or
another red flavor
1 cup heavy cream
2 meringue nests
1 cup blueberries

Here’s how you and your child can recycle plastic
containers into decorative stackable holders to fill
with anything from toy cars to coins.

Divide the strawberries among the glasses. Prepare the jello
according to the package instructions and pour over the strawberries.
Place in the fridge until set.
Whip the cream. Break the meringues into pieces and stir into the
whipped cream. When the jello is set, divide the cream among the
four glasses.
Spoon a layer of blueberries on top and decorate with the U.S flag.
BELLE’S CROWN
On the night the Beast planned to confess his love, Belle
descended from the west wing wearing a gorgeous glittery gown.
Taken by her beauty, the Beast grew timid, but Belle ushered him
into the ballroom where the two swept across the floor arm-inarm as Mrs. Potts and Chip looked on. Adorned with a delicate
paper flower, this golden felt tiara is made to match this destined
princess’ flowing yellow dress.
MATERIALS
Empty plastic frosting container (or similar container)

Craft paper (yellow, blue, and red) Glue stick

INSTRUCTIONS:

Measure the height of the
container from just below
the lid to the bottom. Using
that measurement as the
width, cut a strip of yellow
craft paper long enough to
go around the container with a little overlap. Then cut
another strip, 1/2-inch narrower, from blue craft paper.

Glue the blue paper strip atop the yellow one, centering it
as shown.
3.
Wrap the two-layer strip around the container and glue
together the overlapping ends.
4.
For a label, print out the template and use the pieces to
cut shapes out of the specified colors of paper.

as a pattern to cut out a crown shape from the yellow felt and the
larger one to cut a crown shape from the white glitter felt.
Glue the yellow crown atop the white one, as shown.
Glue the acrylic gems to the crown, centering them in the upper
points and the lower corners.
Now glue the lower edge of the crown to the headband, starting in
the center and working your way out to the ends.
Finally, glue on the flower, centering it on the face of the crown.

CHICKEN
INGREDIENTS
1 (3 1/2-pound) chicken, flattened
Kosher salt
1/3 cup good olive oil
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest (2 lemons)
1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon minced garlic (3 cloves)
1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary leaves
Freshly ground black pepper
1 lemon, halved
DIRECTIONS
Sprinkle the chicken with 1 teaspoon salt on each side. Combine
the olive oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, garlic, rosemary, and 2
teaspoons pepper in a small measuring cup. Place the chicken in
a ceramic or glass dish just large enough to hold it flat. Pour the
lemon marinade over the chicken, turning it in the dish. Cover
the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or
overnight. Turn the chicken 2 or 3 times while marinating.

When ready to grill, prepare a hot charcoal fire on 1 side
of a grill (or turn a gas grill on low heat). Spread 1/4 of the
coals across the other side of the grill. Place the chicken on
the cooler side, skin side up, and weigh it down with the dish
you used for marinating. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes, until the
underside is golden brown. Turn the chicken skin side down,
weight again with the dish, and cook for another 12 to 15
minutes, until the skin is golden brown and the chicken is
cooked through. Place the lemon halves on the cool side of the
grill, cut side down for the last 10 minutes of cooking. Remove
the chicken to a plate or cutting board, cover with aluminum
foil, and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Cut in quarters, sprinkle
with salt, and serve with the grilled lemon halves.

INGREDIENTS
1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 half-pints fresh raspberries, divided
2 half-pints fresh blueberries
2 tablespoons framboise (raspberry brandy)
1 loaf brioche or egg bread (1 to 1 1/2 pounds)
DIRECTIONS
Rum Whipped Cream, recipe follows
Combine the strawberries, sugar, and 1/4 cup of water in a large
saucepan and cook uncovered over medium-low heat for 5 minutes.
Add 2 cups of the raspberries and all the blueberries and cook,
stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches a simmer, and simmer
for a minute. Off the heat, stir in the remaining raspberries and the
framboise.
Slice the bread in 1/2-inch-thick slices and remove the crusts. In
the bottom of a 7 1/2-inch round by 3-inch high souffle or baking
dish, ladle about 1/2 cup of the cooked berry mixture. Arrange slices
of bread in a pattern (this will become the top when it’s unmolded)
and then add more berry mixture to saturate. Continue adding bread,
cutting it to fit the mold, and berries. Finish with bread and cooked
berries, using all of the fruit and syrup.
Place a sheet of plastic wrap loosely over the pudding. Find a plate
approximately the same diameter as the inside of the mold and place
it on top. Weight the mold with a heavy can and refrigerate. Remove
the weight after 6 to 8 hours. Cover the pudding with plastic wrap
and refrigerate overnight.

Just before serving, run a knife around the outside of the pudding and
unmold it upside down onto a serving plate. Serve in wedges with
rum whipped cream.
Rum Whipped Cream:
1 cup (1/2 pint) cold heavy cream
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon dark rum
Whip the cream in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk
attachment. When it starts to thicken, add the sugar, vanilla, and rum.
Continue to whip until it forms stiff peaks. Serve cold.

1 pint cherry tomatoes
Good olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Heat a charcoal grill with coals. Spread them out in one
dense layer and brush the grill with oil. Place the cherry
tomatoes on skewers, threading them through the stem of
the tomato. Brush the tomatoes with olive oil and sprinkle
with salt and pepper.
Place the tomato skewers on the grill, turning once, until
seared on the outside but still firm inside, about 5 minutes.

DIRECTIONS
Remove wide strips of zest from 2 lemons with a vegetable
peeler (do not remove the pith). Make 2 cups simple syrup
(recipe below), adding the lemon zest before heating. Let cool,
then pour into an ice-filled pitcher. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2
cups each fresh lemon juice and water, and some lemon slices.
Simple Syrup: To make 2 cups simple syrup, bring 1 1/2cups
each sugar and water to a boil, stirring until dissolved. Let cool.

DOWNED WORKERS PROGRAM
Your Los Angeles Water and Power Employees’ Association
has introduced a new component of its assistance programs.
As it has done since the early 1930’s, your Water & Power
Employees’ Association added the Downed Workers Program
to complement the benefits offered by the Department and
Local 18.
The new Downed Workers Program will assist family members
of Department employee that requires hospitalization after
sustaining work related injuries. We know that having loved
ones nearby helps recovery, and eases stress during these
difficult times. This program provides instant monetary
disbursements for the cost of family member transportation,
housing, food, and other miscellaneous expenses incurred
while attending to, or visiting the injured employee, with no
expectation of repayment. Upon release from the hospital,
a recovering employee may seek assistance from our other
programs, such as, medical equipment grants and emergency
loans.
We thank the Power System for conceiving this program
and introducing it to the Employees’ Association Board
of Directors in early 2009. Representatives of the Power
Safety & Training Group also met with our Board on several
occasions to develop program guidelines. In November 2009,
the Employees’ Association Board approved the guidelines
and allocated funding for program establishment. In March
2010 program introduction began at quarterly Safety
meetings and in New Employee Orientations. The response
was immediate, and employees generously contributed to the
Donors’ Welfare Plan.
The new Downed Workers Program fulfills our stated mission
of providing assistance to employees and their families.
We should be proud to have programs that help our fellow
employees and the community during difficult times.
Remember, all assistance programs rely on Donors’ Welfare
Plan funding, so we seek your support in promoting this
program and encouraging employees to contribute.
