The City of Kingsport and Sullivan County partner to provide four locations for recycling. Brookside Drive (Landfill) Fort Henry Drive (Civic Auditorium) Industry Drive (Public Works) Lake Crest (Ingles) 1 12/11/2015 SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING City of Kingsport started single stream recycling January 1, 2012 Single stream makes it easier for collection; all materials are collected together It allows the city to collect more items It will allow us to collect recycling with automated trucks and 96 gallon carts. This process will make it more cost effective to recycle more material. ACCEPTABLE RECYCLABLE ITEMS Cardboard (must be flattened and cut in two feet squares) Chipboard/grey cardboard Office paper Newspaper Phonebooks Magazines Junk mail Aluminum cans Tin cans Glass (clear, brown, blue, and green) Plastics (numbers 1-7) Used motor oil Clean and remove all lids from items to be recycled for safety reasons 2 12/11/2015 ITEMS THAT CANNOT BE COLLECTED CURBSIDE Plastic containers that have had petroleum in them Plastic bags Styrofoam Tempered glass Plated glass SINGLE STREAM TRANSFER TRAILER 3 12/11/2015 ITEMS THAT ARE RECYCLED AT THE CITY OF KINGSPORT LANDFILL AND SULLIVAN COUNTY TRANSFER STATION Electronic items Paint Tires Appliances Brush Leaf compost Used motor oil ELECTRONIC Electronics are placed in Gaylord boxes at the Sullivan county transfer station and then picked up for recycling. 4 12/11/2015 PAINT Place paint in cargo containers at Sullivan county transfer station. TIRES The tires that are collected by the landfill are recycled at the Washington County tire center. 5 12/11/2015 APPLIANCES The appliances that are collected are recycled by the City of Kingsport through a metal company three to four times a year. BRUSH All the brush and wood that is collected is ground and recycled as boiler fuel at Domtar Paper Company. 6 12/11/2015 LEAF COMPOST All the leaves that are collected by the City of Kingsport are collected and turned into leaf compost for city landscaping projects and to cover the landfill. 7 12/11/2015 RECYCLING FACTS Every Sunday 500,000 trees are used to produce newspapers in the U.S.; only 12% are recycled. Americans go through 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet every 3 months. In one year Americans throw away 1.6 billion ball point pens, 2 billion razors, and 16 billion diapers. An average American generates 3.5 pounds of trash daily. Last year Americans spent 8 billion dollars to bury their trash. In one day Americans produce enough trash to fill the New Orleans Superdome twice. Americans represent only 5% of the world population, but produce over 50% of the world’s trash. Each time an aluminum can is recycled enough energy is saved to power a television for 3 hours. RECYCLING FACTS (CONT) $1 for every $10 we spend on food pays for packaging. Life expectancy of litter: styrofoam cup 10-20 years; plastic 50-60 years; cigarette filters 15 years; aluminum 100-500 years; glass never. 90% of office waste by weight is paper. 50% of landfill space is taken up by paper. Each ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees. Yard wastes make up about 18% of landfill space. Each year Americans throw away enough steel to reconstruct Manhattan. Americans produce 150 million tons of solid waste annually or 3.5 pounds per person per day and only approximately 10% of that is recycled. 8 12/11/2015 THE THREE R’S The City of Kingsport follows the arrows trying to make Kingsport a better place by using the three R’s: recycle, reuse, and reduce. KEEPING KINGSPORT BEAUTIFUL It takes all people working together in efforts to minimize solid waste so that we make as small a footprint on the earth as possible in order to keep Kingsport beautiful for all generations to come. 9
