DearParishFamilyOnFridayOctober7,theFeastofOurLadyoftheRosary,theDiocesanOfficefortheTraditionalLatinMasscelebratedtheirfirst“TravelingMass”hereatSt.Aloysius. Therewereabout150attendeeswith30beingfromour
parish. TherewasaverynicereceptionthatfollowedintheSchoolCafeteria. BishopO’Connellhadbeengetting
lettersrequestingtheTraditionalMassfromvariousindividualsscatteredaroundtheDiocese. Withashortageof
prieststoevensaytheOrdinaryFormoftheMass,hecertainlyhasagreatershortageofthoseabletosaytheExtraordinaryFormoftheMass(TLM). Sothesolutionproposedisa“TravelingMass”whichwillgoaroundthe
Diocese4timesayeartoadifferentChurchinadifferentlocation. Thiswasthefirst“TravelingMass”anditwas
agreatsuccess. Whatreallyimpressedmewasthelargenumberofyoungpeoplewhocame,including16Altar
Boys! Theircoordinatortoldmetheyhave75altarboyswhoviefortheopportunitytoservetheTLM. TheTLM
isofferedeverySundayatSt.John’sinAllentown,St.CatherineLaboreinMiddletownandHolyCrossinRumson;
allinMonmouthCounty. TheyareplanningonthenexttravelingMasstobeheldnextMarch/April.
WithrecentawarenessofmanyyoungOrthodoxJewishFamiliesmovingintotown,thereisalotmis-information
goingaroundaboutthisJewishcommunity. BackintheSummerawellknownmediapriestfromChicagocalled
toaskmeifIwouldwelcomeafriendofhiswhohadalsobeenafriendtoCardinalGeorge.RebbePhilLeowitz,
whohadjustretiredfromministrywasmovingtoJacksontobenearhisgrandchildren. TheRebbe(Rabbi)wasa
greatcommunityleaderinChicago,afriendtoCatholicsandtothegreaterChicagoCommunity. MayorDalyhad
givenhimaCommunityServiceawardforhisleadershipinbringingAfricanAmericanandJewishyouthtogether
inthepromotionofharmony. IcontactedtheRabbiandwelcomedhimandwehavehadweeklyconversations
abouteverytopicknowntoreligiousleaders!
Agoodportionofwhatwediscuss–becauseitisinthenews-isalsothegrowingpresenceofOrthodoxJewish
familiesinJacksonandtheissuesplaguingLakewood. Weagreethatmuchofwhatisbeingtalkedaboutisuninformed. ThereneedstobeagreaterunderstandingabouttheOrthodoxJewishCommunity. Ihavelivedamong
Jewishpeople,ofmanydifferentsects,allmylife. Thereisnomonolithic“JewishCommunity”. LikeChristianity
therearemanyexpressionsoftheJewishReligion. ThesamecanbesaidoftheHasidicOrthodoxCommunity;itis
alsonotmonolithic. RecentlyoneofourparishionerswholivesinanentireHasidicNeighborhood,whichusedto
beallCatholic,toldme;“Father,theyarethemostwonderfulneighbors.”
TohelpusunderstandtheHasidicOrthodoxCommunityIhaveinvitedRabbiLeowitztocometoSt.Aloysiuson
SundayOctober30th at3pminGonzagaHalltopresent“AllyouwantedtoknowaboutOrthodoxJudaismbut
neverhadachancetoask”. IjokedwiththeRabbithatIinvitedhimonthenightbeforeHalloweensomaybewe
shouldchangethetitleto“Don’tbespookedbytheOrthodox”. TheRabbihasagreatsenseofhumorandIthink
youwillfeelateaseinhispresence. Wehavebecomeverygoodfriendsoverthelastseveralmonths. Inviteyour
friendsandneighbors-itisopentoanyonewhodesirestounderstandtheHasidicCommunity. Comeandbring
yourquestions.TheRabbiwillbehappytogiveusinsightinto,whatisformany,amysteriousandunknown–
andcertainlyunique–religiousgroup!
