Those hopes didn’t last that long, but a year later, Georgia coach Mark Richt is pretty sure the Sun Devils’ bad memories did. “I’m sure they aren’t too thrilled about the fact that we beat them last year; they’ll be ready to go. They are outstanding all the way around,” Richt said. And the R word? “They are undefeated. I’m sure they are excited about the opportunity to come and play an SEC team and maybe get a little revenge,” he said. Before anyone gets too carried away, victories over Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe do not exactly inspire Top 10 rankings. As for revenge, Florida and Texas were just happy with wins last week against teams that had mortally offended a year ago. The lesson: Leave the revenge to someone better at it than football teams, like divorce lawyers. Arizona State is like last week’s opponent, Arkansas, in that two games into the season the only thing we know about them is that they are better than Louisiana-Monroe and Idaho State. Not much to go on there. Georgia’s biggest problem in the game will probably be Georgia. Take away the giveaways, and the Bulldogs would look better on offense and defense. Nine turnovers in three games is not a confidence builder. Richt knows this. Georgia needs get rolling early and get that defense working. n n h m back to do some of the heavy lifting inside. All-in-all, the offense looks pretty good. Defensively, things are not so bright. Georgia needs a better rush from its defensive front. And, by the way defensive backs, keep those receivers in front of you, and just for the record you, too, have a right to the football. “The better you cover, the longer the quarterback has to hold the ball and it allows your pressure to get to him. We also know that if we put pressure on the quarterback he tends to throw the ball too soon or a little bit off balance, and that helps your coverage. It’s as simple as that. We have to cover better and we have to put more pressure,” Richt said. Unfortunately, the simplest things are sometimes the hardest. Arizona State’s biggest claim to fame is coach Dennis Erickson, who knows about winning national titles and coaching in the NFL and packing up things to move. Given a e a every fan. And still the drops and INTs keep coming. “I think we’ll roll a whole lot faster if we don’t have the two anchors out the back of the caboose that are stuck in the ground dragging behind us, and that is our turnover ratio is very poor and penalties have cropped up on us,” Richt said. “If we can just cut those anchors lose, I think we will fly even better and if we just improve in those two areas, I think everything will improve.” It certainly couldn’t hurt. The sooner Georgia goes weighs anchor, the better. Everyone drops the ball, it just seems like the Bulldogs never drop on it. Offensively the Bulldogs have hit high gear. Quarterback Joe Cox is playing like a veteran. A.J. Green is playing like the superstar he is, and the cameo players at the other receiving positions are doing their parts. Richard Samuel has the running game well in hand as long as there are big holes, and Caleb King is T BA © 2009 Savannah Morning News | savannahnow.com 3 SCOPING IT OUT Five keys to a Georgia win Don’t let them roam free Arkansas rocked Georgia for seven pass plays of 30 or more yards and threw for 408 passing yards and five touchdowns last week. On several plays, Bulldog defenders appeared several steps behind and at times looked lost. Fortunately for Georgia, Ryan Mallett won’t be dropping back to pass this week. Danny Sullivan makes his first collegiate road start and thus far has only completed two passes this season for more than 23 yards. Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez says he plans to turn to redshirt freshmen defensive backs Bacarri Rambo and Sanders Commings more Saturday. A change in personnel probably can’t hurt any worse than what the Bulldogs got a week ago. Prince Miller, Bryan Evans, Branden Smith and Brandon Boykin all were victims on big plays last week. 1 an C new s p re LLE G s ts O ning E INSIDE Game Preview | 5 Keys for UGA | Match-ups | Two-deep lineup | UGA Roster | Around the SEC F OO LL s av or n n h m Kelly Lambert/Morris News Service Georgia’s Prince Miller pushes Arkansas’ Michael Smith out of bounds in the third quarter of the Bulldogs’ 52-41 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday at Donald W. This is the Sun Devils’ longest trip since playing at Miami in 1997. They were 1-4 last season on the road, with the only win coming at a Washington team that went 0-12. Georgia has only lost one nonconference game at home under Mark Richt— to Georgia Tech last season. The Bulldogs are 34-4 under Richt in non-conference games home and away. “We’ll find out a little bit more about ourselves after this week,” Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson said. “Going to the South and playing football on the road is a hard thing to do, but we need to find out about ourselves.” an C new s p re LLE G Continued on next page s ts O ning E INSIDE Game Preview | 5 Keys for UGA | Match-ups | Two-deep lineup | UGA Roster | Around the SEC F OO LL s av or Minimize easy giveaways It sounds like a broken record now. Three turnovers against Oklahoma State. Three turnovers against South Carolina. Three turnovers against Arkansas. There’s been a pick six for a touchdown against South Carolina. Too many turnovers on the Georgia side of the field. Against Arkansas there was a mishandled pitch by Richard Samuel and Brandon Boykin bumped into Prince Miller on a punt return. Georgia is 116th in the nation in turnover margin. Arizona State is No. 1. If that trend line continues Saturday, the Sun Devils could put a scare into the Bulldogs. 4 n n h m Cover those kicks Georgia has kicked it deep into the end zone and kicked it shorter on directional kicks, but its kickoff coverage remains a trouble spot. The Bulldogs are ranked 108th in the nation in kickoff return yardage defense with opponents averaging 26.73 yards per return. The Bulldogs have four touchbacks this season, but opponents have returned kickoffs for 50 or more yards in each of the first three games. Arizona State leads the nation in kickoff returns with an average, yes an average, of 50.8 yards per return. Omar Bolden took the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown against LouisianaMonroe. The Bulldogs’ biggest yardage plays given up each game haven’t been on defense, but on kickoff returns. 3 e a 2 T BA © 2009 Savannah Morning News | savannahnow.com 5 SCOPING IT OUT Fire up the weapons Tight end Orson Charles and receiver Tavarres King got their first career touchdown catches last week and tight end Aron White had his first of the season. With defenses trying to slow down A.J. Green, the Bulldogs offense will flourish if the complementary players continue to take the pressure off of Green. Rantavious Wooten could be next. The Bulldogs gave the freshman receiver a handoff last week and threw his way. Receiver Michael Moore isn’t flashy but he’s been effective. The senior has 10 catches for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns. 5 an C new s p re LLE G s ts O ning E INSIDE Game Preview | 5 Keys for UGA | Match-ups | Two-deep lineup | UGA Roster | Around the SEC F OO LL s av or n n h m e a David Manning/Morris News Service Wide receiver A.J. T BA © 2009 Savannah Morning News | savannahnow.com 6 HOW THEY MATCH UP Offense Defense Intangibles Coaching The Sun Devils are averaging almost 400 yards per game total offense. Better yet, they are third in the Pac-10 in team defense. Sounds good, right? If you were buying a house, there would be a Truth in Lending clause about what that new paint is hiding. Here it is: Those numbers came against Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe. Buckle up, Devils, you get a reality check this week. Georgia’s quarterback, Joe Cox, has found the range and the confidence. The good news? Georgia is averaging 34.3 points. The bad news? Georgia is giving up 34 points per game. Let’s face it, the defense that started the season with so much potential has been a bust. Kicked around, run around and passed around, Georgia’s defense has yet to have a defining moment, much less a defining game. Arizona State is one of those teams that remains an unknown quantity two games into the season. That comes from playing nobodies. I would like to give the edge to Georgia. The kicking game is vastly improved, and ASU’s kicker is out. Plus the Bulldogs’ special teams are special and Georgia is on a roll. But … you can’t keep coughing up the football three times a game with Georgia’s defense. And, hello, penalties are not a good thing. The feeling here is that Georgia is going to be overconfident for this game (for no discernible reason) and the Bulldogs are ripe for, if not an upset, real trouble between the Hedges. Offensively, Georgia has its coaching act together. The points are coming in bunches, and the Bulldogs are showing more weapons and potential every game. Defensively, it’s a train wreck. Arkansas may be an offensive machine, but South Carolina isn’t. Arizona’s coach, Dennis Erickson, has made more stops than MARTA. He has spent time at seven organizations, including Miami and Washington State. Presumably, he learned something along the way.
