SHABBAT SCHEDULE Candle Lighting (May 29) Kabbalat Shabbat/Ma’ariv Shaharit (Sanctuary) Minha/Ma’ariv Havdalah Candle Lighting ( June 5) 8:31 pm 6:45 pm 9:00 am 8:20 pm 9:28 pm 8:37 pm DAILY MINYAN Sunday Monday–Thursday Friday 9:00 am/7:30 pm 7:15 am/7:30 pm 7:15 am/7:00 pm Thank you to our co-sponsors: Mazal Tov to: The Congregational Kiddush is co-sponsored by: • Doreen Lerman-Mere and Andrew Mere on the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Aaron Mere on Thursday, May 28. • Michelle and Wayne Langburt in honour of the B’not Mitzvah of their daughters, Dahlia and Maya Langburt. • Doug Millstone and Linda Chodos in honour of the Aufruf and forthcoming marriage of their son, Dov Millstone to Maxa Sawyer. The Speaking Wilderness T he synagogue Torah readings this season are taken from the Book of Numbers, better named in Hebrew as Bemidbar, in the wilderness. There is quite a lot of complaining in this book, as the Israelites schlep through the wilderness, making mistakes that lengthen their journey and deepen their problems. Yet the wilderness is also their place of revelation. Later books of the Bible present conflicting reports of Israel in the wilderness. Jeremiah compares Israel to a bride following her groom through the wilderness. But Psalms recalls the desert trek as 40 years of incessant complaining. Both accounts appear to be true. The desert was a place of terror and complaint, but also a place of inspiration and love. • Michelle and Wayne Langburt on the B’not Mitzvah of their daughters, Dahlia and Maya Langburt, and to the grandparents, Marsha and Morris Goldstein and Helen and Nathan Langburt. Great-grandmother is Minny Peters. • Maxa Sawyer and Dov Millstone on their Aufruf and forthcoming marriage, and to the parents, Linda Chodos and Doug Millstone, Terri Millstone, and Jerry Sawyer and Merle Rosenberg. • Rebekah Priluck and Mark Shievitz on their Aufruf and forthcoming marriage, and to the parents, Rebecca and Marcel Shievitz and Sheila and Ira Priluck. Perhaps the challenges of the wilderness are a necessary discomfort for the revelations of the spirit. Isaiah said, “A voice cries out in the wilderness: ‘Make a path for the Lord!’” The wilderness speaks - hamidbar medaber - and generations of Jews have returned to its rugged isolation to discover the divine presence. In the towns and cities of today, we build ornate structures of religious life, and indeed, Judaism flourishes in urban settings. But from time to time, it would be wise for us to leave the comforts of home and get away from the noise, the technology, and the distractions. Remember that the wilderness speaks - hamidbar medaber - and in it a person may discern the voice of God. BETH TIKVAH SYNAGOGUE 1966–2016 0 YOUTH & YOUNG FAMILY TGIS Thank G-d It’s Shabbat!
