A Piece of Rope
Most of us will never be in a position where we fall through a crevasse. Maybe
those budding mountaineers studying outdoor education may run the risk in the
future, them and particularly adventurous skiers. I have peered into one however
and seen the eeire space below, thinking how terrifying it must be to fall without
anything to make me stop. I was wondering about this while watching the trailer
for Beyond the Edge, the movie due out this weekend documenting Sir Edmund
Hillary’s Everest climb in 1953. On Everest of course crevasses are a lethal but familiar hazard, and without his rope connecting him to
Tenzing, they would likely have claimed the life of our great New Zealand hero.
Mountain climbing ropes come in two types. The original static rope, used exclusively up to 50 years ago for everything, including the
Everest climb, is usually now only fixed in place and attached to anchors. The main form of rope used today is the newer style dynamic
rope. This rope is designed to be more elastic and stretch under load. This will absorb the energy when someone falls, reducing the
force that could otherwise cause injury. By breaking the fall, the climber is saved from a jarring snap when the rope tightens. A wonderful
invention first seen in 1964, they have saved countless climbers from serious injury and, as they are flexible, are less likely to snap when
placed under a sudden excessive force.
For mountaineers, ropes matter. Jono Taylor is Head of Outdoor Education at Kristin, he has a brilliant programme and students love
learning from this highly skilled educator. He has a few “rules of rope” that I share with you now:
1. Look after your rope, it holds your life.
2. When buying rope, don’t trust a cheap deal and don’t cut corners. With rope you get what you pay for.
3. Hitches, bends and knots weaken rope and make them less effective.
4. Avoid friction and other forces that may harm your rope, a worn rope will become quickly unsafe.
Both types of climbing (or kernmantle) ropes can look pretty much the same to the uninitiated. They both contain a core of strands that do
the essential work of the rope, and this is then covered with a protective sheath. The sheath holds the strands together and protects them
from external influences that may wear or harm them. An expert can tell the difference between the two types just by looking at them, but if
you don’t know the letter or colour code they can appear to be the same. To most, they both just look like rope.
I liken a good education to a piece of climbing rope. On the outside many providers do look the same, and the labels of their strands
all have the same names. All schools have classrooms, principals and teachers for example. However, in the same way that static and
dynamic ropes can look similar but have vastly different performance, so can the characteristics of those educational strands make all the
difference in the world. Static or dynamic, it really matters what sort of education you have.
A Kristin education is most definitely a dynamic one. Flexible and responsive to change we are characterised by a cycle of continuous
improvement, a relentless passion for making things better. This occurs throughout the strands of the school; the “switching on” of a lifelong
passion for learning in the Junior School, the focused and carefully targeted Middle School classroom, and the preparation for Tertiary
and adult success that remains the overriding objective of the Senior School. In all three schools we are constantly striving to improve our
outcomes for students, always asking how we can better create lifelong learners who will thrive in all they do.
Week 2 - Term 4
Monday 21 October - Sunday 27 October
>> Issue 30 2013
There are many daily examples of the dynamic strands of Kristin, and nowhere is this more visible than in that life changing conversation
between the teacher and the student, the place where our core business takes place. If I was to analyse each thread of this particular
strand I would see such things as a settled and positive learning environment; a willingness to learn and engage on the part of each
individual student; a caring teacher who has expert knowledge of their subject and who is highly skilled in their craft; and a shared cohesive
vision for learning that gives meaning to all we do. All through the three schools these strong strands exist, identifying the consistent quality
of the Kristin experience. Put together they form a pretty unbreakable piece of rope.
The crevasses of life are many. As our students leave the safe base camp of school they go out into an environment with numerous
hazards, and many pathways that may look smooth on the surface but underneath contain traps and pitfalls that can cause them great
harm. The trick to surviving these, I believe, is to be attached to a good bit of rope, to remain connected to the skills, the learnings and the
values of your education.
A piece of static rope can let you down when pressure comes on, when force is exerted it will eventually snap. Only a dynamic rope can
survive in our rapidly changing world. A rope that is strong, braided together of the best quality thread and yet able to adjust to the situation
and context it finds itself in. Relevant knowledge changes rapidly these days, and only a lifelong learner will be able to avoid dropping into a
chasm of irrelevance, to stay on their feet when old certainties disappear.
Last Friday I had the pleasure of meeting up with over 150 alumni. People who had all experienced a Kristin education over a range of
some 25 years. From some in their 40’s to those who graduated just five years ago, the LIC foyer was abuzz with the conversation of old
friends who shared this most forming of experiences. As we talked many common strands appeared and, despite the difference in scale
and facilities of the school over all those years, the quality of the experience in the classroom was the same. Always progressive, always
looking forward, and with a core of personalised concern and love. All those I talked to commented on how well prepared they had been
by this Kristin education, it had allowed them to succeed even in times of great difficulty. It had given them the confidence to not fear
crevasses, and it had given them the assurance needed to climb their mountains of success.

What’s been happening?
Year 3 visit the Tip Top ice-cream factory
All the Year 3’s went to the Tip Top ice-cream factory. It was very exciting. We went to learn
how they make ice-cream and how they package it to send to the shops. The most popular
ice-cream in all of New Zealand is the Choc Bar. Did you know that all the left over ice-cream
that is going to waste is fed to pigs? We learnt how they made the ice-cream by mixing four
special ingredients, sugar, cream, milk and glucose. All of the Year 3’s had a free ice-cream at
the end of the tour. We all had a wonderful time.

5D Guardian Angels
There is extensive research about the importance of having a classroom environment that is
inclusive and encourages children to strive for excellence. A healthy classroom environment
increases a student’s ability to learn and feel comfortable as a member of the class.
In 5D we have created a Guardian Angel Programme where each child receives a different
buddy each week, who they secretly look after and do good deeds for, without expecting a
reward or thanks. It is a little like having a secret Santa all year round. It was created after
a shared book we read called ‘The Warm Fuzzy Tale’. The class decided to take important
aspects and values learnt from reading this book and put the concepts into an authentic
learning programme in our room. Hence our Guardian Angel Programme was created.
Another programme in our room is our Reviews of the Week. We reflect on our week and
carefully record our highlights and also things we are still working on, in each curriculum area.
These go home to parents each week so they are able to see ‘a window into our classroom’
and the parents have been especially excited as we have now learnt how to include QR codes
so that they can also see videos or a picture about something which has made us proud.

Things to note...
Operation Christmas Child
Yes, it’s that time of the year again, when we do something special for underprivileged children at Christmas. All Junior School students
have been given a brochure and a letter about this project, which we actively participate in each year, bringing great joy and hope to a child
at Christmas time.
If you require a shoebox please see Mrs Miller in JS14. Boxes need to be returned by the end of Week 3. Thank you for your assistance
and generosity.
Starship Foundation - Will You Help?
Next week the Alliance Team will be collecting donations of old books, DVD’s, CD’s, jewellery (no earrings), nail polish, Playstation and
X-box games. If you would like to donate items, please bring them to your classroom where a member of the Alliance Team will collect
them and issue you with 100 house points in return.

Year 9 2014 Orientation Day
On a sunny, but windy Wednesday 16 October, Kristin students had the opportunity to meet
the new Year 9 students for next year.
I found this day a great opportunity to get together with the new students, make more friends
and to welcome them to Kristin.
The new students who will be attending Kristin next year came from schools around New
Zealand, even overseas. They were assigned buddies that they spent the day with to help
them feel welcome. It was fun to talk to these students and find out all about them.
It was an enjoyable day and I am looking forward to Year 9.

Art Exhibition
From 21-28 October, 500 selected students from Year 7 and 8 around Auckland are
privileged to have their artwork displayed at an exhibition at MOTAT. Students from Kristin
are among those to have work on display and my painting was included.
The unique pieces of art varied from eye-catching paintings and breathtaking sculptures
to amazing photography and collages that filled the building. Items that stood out for me
included the wearable arts, the action packed group displays and a model of a snake coming
out of the ground and wrapping around a tower made of cans. It was a delight to see all the
different talents in pieces of art that really inspired me. It is a great experience so go and visit
the exhibition and see my own piece on display. Other students from our school involved in
the exhibition are Grace Hickson, Jackson Coyne, Imogen Cunningham, Jamie Preece, Tess
Heath, Zoe Mutch, Mia Hawes, Sylvie Porter, Kate Litherland and Nora Zhang.

Mercy Hospice Trip
On 16 October, members of the Middle School Community and Service team went to Mercy
Hospice in St Mary’s Bay. We were told that these people needed a lot of support and
energy, as they were trying to enjoy the limited time they have left. We did our best to make
a difference. Some of us went to help with the nail-polishing, or even to play the ukulele.
Later, we helped with serving lunch to the people there and after this it was time to return to
school. We didn’t want to leave, as we had so much fun.
We were all feeling really positive, because we knew that we made them all feel very happy.
Overall, this trip taught us that people are people, regardless of their illnesses and that
everyone deserves respect and kindness.
Thank you so much to Mr Darrow and the Mercy Hospice staff for making this possible.

Year 10 Formal
Kristin School, 26 September 2013. The formal had changed, sharply. The theme was fancier. The music was louder. The food was nicer
and the drinks were cooler than ever. It was the Year 10 Formal.
Everyone turned up with their finest clothes, walking the red carpet, bringing plates of food or a drink for supper. The theme was the ‘Great
Gatsby’ and a huge background of a stairway was set up in the middle of the atrium. There was also a photo booth set up for students to
take pictures with whoever they wished.
When everyone had arrived, class photos were taken, right in front of the stairs. When plenty of photos were taken by Mr Gurney, students
were escorted to the dance floor by the Year 13’s who agreed to take part in the formal. The music started, and the dances had begun.
We were all sweaty, yet it was a fantastic time. However, the formal wasn’t over yet. The food was ready for us to dine. Delicious food was
spread out along the long tables, ranging from savouries to sweets, and it was certainly a fine meal.
Everyone had a wonderful time, and we all went home feeling tired, yet so good. We couldn’t possible forget the last Middle School Formal.
Thank you Mr Murray, Mr Gurney, Year 13’s, and many other staff members for making this night a memorable one.

Familiar Faces
The strength of relationships formed here at Kristin is never more apparent than when past
students and staff come together for the annual reunion. This year we have welcomed back
record numbers to celebrate Kristin’s anniversary in two events, held last weekend.
The Alumni Reunion on Friday night was attended by 150 past students who enjoyed a drink and
a tour of the school grounds, after which graduates of 1988, ’93, ’89, 2003 and ’08 stayed on for
dinner in the Senior Common Room. About 120 familiar faces attended the Afternoon Tea and
Tour for past Staff and Kauri Club members on Saturday, sharing stories in the sunshine and
enjoying a performance from the Junior School’s Treble Clefs Choir.
Beautiful weather showcased the school grounds perfectly and for many who had not returned
to Kristin for years, the improvements that have been made to the facilities were striking. Stories
flowed of times spent at Kristin, from the foundation students and staff to the more recent
graduates, and particularly from the class of ’88 who had turned out in droves. It appears that
no matter whether five, 25 or 40 years have passed by, the intervening time has done little to
dampen the overwhelming sense of Kristin pride, fun and laughter which reverberated amongst
the reunited guests.
Photos of the Alumni Reunion can be viewed and purchased from Michael Smith Photography,
and photos from the Staff Reunion can be viewed on the Kristin Alumni Facebook page.

2nd on bar for the first day of competition and 4th on the bar for day two. Olivia’s team also
won a cup for overall 1st team.

Congratulations to Lingshu Liu, Jacky Cheng, Kelly Wang and Bruce Zhang on placing 3rd= in
the North Harbour Table Tennis Premier Grade final held last Friday night.
Congratulations to Matthew Officer, Ryan Harding and Leroy Devereux on winning the
Intermediate Boys’ C Grade final against Takapuna Normal Intermediate School. Matthew was
also named ‘Best Player’ for the grade.
Orienteering
Australian Champs
Tegan Knightbridge and Georgina Dibble had a fantastic orienteering experience in Australia
during the school holidays. The terrain was very different to what they are used to in New
Zealand, so when they arrived on the Friday they were lucky enough to do a training map in
nearby Canberra to introduce them to the type of map they would be running on. They were
training in a reserve called Mt Taylor, where there were Kangaroos in abundance, just hopping
about and grazing whilst they ran around the reserve. Later on, they were to experience
seeing Kangaroos out in the bush during the actual races.
Results:
Australian Sprint Distance Championships
Tegan Knightbridge 5th
Georgina Dibble 11th
Australian Middle Distance Championships
Tegan Knightbridge 5th Georgina Dibble 10th
Australian Long Distance Championships
Tegan Knightbridge 4th
Georgina Dibble 14th
Run in conjunction with the Australian Champs, was the Pan Pacific Challenge for 14 year
olds and under. Tegan and Georgina were combined with Tasmania and their team finished
the competition in 2nd place.
The Australian Relay Championships were raced on the last day. NZ had four girls in 16 year
old age group teams. Tegan was lucky enough to get pushed up into the 2nd string NZ team, due to a girl in the team sustaining an injury.
Both Tegan and Georgina are only 13 years old and were running in the 16 year old age group for the relay. Unfortunately in the team
Georgina was in, the 3rd leg runner was injured and did not finish, therefore their time did not count. However Georgina had a good run
as number two leg runner. The highlight of the week was Tegan’s team finishing 1st by beating NZ’s first-string team and all the Australian
teams, therefore claiming the W16 Australian Relay Championship title! Congratulations girls.

Auckland Secondary Schools Orienteering Champs
On Wednesday 16 October, Kristin School’s biggest orienteering team ever, headed to Shakespear Park to compete in the AKSS Champs.
The event involves athletes competing in teams of two and locating as many controls as possible in 90 minutes, using a map and compass.
Following orienteering successes this year, four of our experienced athletes did a recruitment drive resulting in 18 students competing.
The conditions were ideal for a tough race with plenty of hills, mud and farm animals to negotiate, and the largest ever number of
competitors across Auckland and beyond. The day was enjoyed by all that were there. Team work in this event is critical to ensure a
strategic plan is made, particularly during the pre-race mapping. Credit must be given to our students that unselfishly assisted one another,
especially between the experienced and novice runners.
Congratulations to the following top ten places in Junior Girls:
1st Tegan Knightbridge and Georgina Dibble - 940pts
10th Annabel Lister and Sophie Katavich - 680pts
Auckland Orienteering Club Championships
Over the weekend, the AOC Champs were held at Woodhill and Half Moon Bay.
Tegan Knightbridge had three races in her age class (14 years and under) and finished 1st in the Middle distance and 2nd in both the
Sprint and the Long distance races. Georgina Dibble placed 5th in the Middle distance race.
Cricket
Kristin Cricket teams have started off on the right foot, with all teams winning their first games last week.
The Kristin 1st XI Girls’ beat Sancta Maria College last Wednesday, finishing with 151/1 from 20 overs thanks to some spirited batting from
Emily Donovan (50 not out) and Rosie Hartwell (40 not out) at the top of the order. Kristin then bowled Sancta Maria all out for just 45 runs.
Emily Donovan and Zoe Watson had four wickets a piece which also included a hat-trick for Emily.
The 1st XI Boys’ beat Mt Albert Grammar 2nd XI (MAGS) by ten wickets on Saturday. Accurate bowling and fielding from Kristin restricted
the early scoring and built pressure which eventually led to three run-outs. John Shaw took three wickets and Dinesh Fonseka chipped in
with two of his own to have MAGS all out for 61 runs. Opening batsmen Joseph Mayes and Dinesh Fonseka cemented the win by chasing
down the target without losing a wicket.
The Premier Colts beat Takapuna Grammar on Saturday by 20 runs in a tight match. Kristin batted first and could only manage a total of
81 runs after losing wickets at regular intervals. However a strong bowling and fielding performance saw Takapuna dismissed for 61 runs.
Jamie McInnes, Jonathon Skinner and Christopher Wiseman were the pick of the bowlers, each taking three wickets.
Rhythmic Gymnastics
The Kristin Rhythmic Gymnastics team had further unexpected success at the Queensland State Championships in Brisbane over the
weekend.
The Kristin Red team, including Bronte Heath and Alyssa Chia, faced a tough challenge against the Queensland team from Moreton Bay
College who are the reigning Australian Sub Junior Group Champions and Silver Medalists. All gymnasts in the Australian team were
12 years of age and had been competing together for three years. The Kristin team averaged 10 years of age and this is their first year
together.
After being unbeaten in New Zealand all year, this was the first time our young gymnasts had been put under pressure in what was their
first international competition. After a nervous first showing, our gymnasts rallied in their second showing to secure the Silver Medal!
The team won praise from the Director of Moreton Bay College’s Gymnastics Centre of Excellence, and she touted them as a team to
watch for the future. She is recommending that Gymnastics Australia extends an invitation to Gymsports New Zealand for this young team
to compete at the Australian Gymnastics Championships in May 2014.
There is little rest for the Kristin coaches with six teams being prepared for the Auckland Primary Schools Competition on November 13.
Touch - Year 7 and 8
A lovely sunny evening last Thursday at Sunnynook Park signaled the start of the summer Touch season for Kristin’s Year 7 and 8 Boys’
and Girls’ teams. The Boys’ team including two, Kristin girls Maggie Hanham and Jamie Preece, dusted off any off-season cobwebs to play
an exciting game against Rosmini College, in the end going down in a tight game, 3-6.
The Year 7 and 8 Girls’ team played their respective first up game against Murrays Bay Intermediate with ex-Kristin student Claudia
Hanham coaching the team; they ended up losing 2-3, although Claudia mentioned after the game that the team has a lot of promise for
the remainder of the season.

Water Polo
Congratulations to Anton Sunde who has been selected for the 2013 New Zealand Schoolboys Water Polo Team. The team will travel to
Sydney in mid-December for training before competing in a tri-nations test series against the Australian and South African Schoolboys’
teams.
This is another exceptional achievement for Anton and we wish him all the best for the tournament.
Mixed Junior Team - Year 9 and 10
Congratulations to the Mixed Junior Water Polo team for taking out the Bronze medal match in the Junior League against Long Bay
College last week. In an exciting game, Jess Marsden opened the scoring for Kristin. A strong defence kept the score at 1-0 until half time
and prevented Long Bay from getting many shots off. In the third quarter Long Bay replied with two goals - and there was also a goal from
Kristin’s Henry Dick.
In the last quarter Kristin had a 5m penalty taken by Jess Marsden to make the score 3-2. Long Bay replied with a goal to take it to a 3-3
draw at the end of normal time. A tension packed penalty shootout followed to separate the two teams, with goals to Jess Marsden, Henry
Dick and James Erskine. Caleb Brooke was outstanding in goal and saved two penalty shots! The final score 6-3 to Kristin.
Hockey
Kristin was exceptionally well represented in the recent National U15 Hockey tournaments. With no fewer than 10 Kristin students on show
for the North Harbour teams, they can be extremely proud of their finishing positions. The final placings were as follows:
U15A Boys - 2nd
U15A Girls - 3rd
U15B Boys - 1st
U15B Girls - 3rd
Congratulations to the following Kristin athletes for their fantastic achievements:
Boys: Connor Greentree, Connor Petrie, Henry Will, Patrick Stone
Girls: Juliette Jenkins, Hattie Jones, Fritha Jones, Clodagh McCullough, Laura McKissock, Emily Maclean
The U13 National tournaments also took place in recent weeks and once again the North Harbour teams came home after creditable
performances:
U13 ‘Hatch’ Boys finished 7th/24 and featured the following players: Sam Shotter, Connor Gauld
U13 ‘Collier’ Girls finished 10th/24 and featured the following players: Maggie Hanham, Zara Felstead, Bridie McCullough
Lana Holgate and Calvin Norcross also performed well for the North Harbour U13B Girls’ and Boys’ teams respectively.

The Ride to
Conquer Cancer
Mr Haslam’s
Marathon Mission
Next month, on 16-17 November, Senior School Dean Chris
Lee will be participating in The Ride to Conquer Cancer,
a 2-day, 200km cycling event that raises funds for cancer
research and treatment. All proceeds from the event go
to Cancer Society Auckland, whose primary mission is
the discovery and development of new drugs for cancer
treatment.
Dear supporters of Ronald McDonald House Auckland
Chris will be raising funds and training hard so he can make
a huge impact in the fight to conquer cancer - but he needs
your help. Please make a donation to his fundraising
account today. Simply add “chris lee” to the search.
Cancer is something that has touched all of our lives in
some measure. It’s Chris’ goal to put a stop to that and
The Ride is how he is doing his part. That’s why he is so
passionate about raising funds. Any donation that you can
give is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your generosity!
KidsCan Santa Run
The Great KidsCan Santa Run is all set for Wednesday 4
December this year starting at 6.30pm in centres throughout
New Zealand.
This year - for the first time - there is an Auckland North
(Albany) event, with the start/finish on Albany Lakes Bridge,
near Westfield Albany.
A major fundraiser for KidsCan, the Santa Run concept is
simple - a 2-3km fun run/walk in a Santa suit! The courses
are kept easy so everyone can finish.
Entrants receive a goodie bag as part of their entry fee.
Santa Suits are provided to adults. Children (12 years and
under) do not receive a santa suit as they are adult “one
size suits all”, but there have been awesome outfits and
dressing up in previous years. Lots of elves, Rudolphs and
other characters make the run and are rewarded with a spot
prizes for the best dressed at each venue.
Early bird registrations before 1 November 2013 will go into
the draw to win 1 of 17 prize packs, as well as getting a
cheaper entry fee!
Register for the Auckland North (Albany) event at
www.santarun.co.nz.
On behalf of Ronald McDonald House Auckland, as well
as the families that use the house often in times of their
greatest need, can I sincerely thank everyone who has
donated to RMHA or at least taken the time to read about
what they do, for their extremely generous support. I know
just how much your support is appreciated by all the families
that use RMHA.
Unfortunately after my last two ‘big’ weeks of training I have
injured my left achilles. Not great with only a week and a bit
to go till the marathon, particularly when the physio I went
to suggested that I was to do no running for the next six
weeks! Needless to say, it is very frustrating as this is the
first injury I have had since taking up running five years ago.
Despite my injury, I will be out on the course on November 3
for RMHA, even if it means ‘hobbling’ the 42 km!
Thank you again on behalf of Ronald McDonald House and
myself.
Mark Haslam
Please help him raise as much money as possible for this
very important charity by making a donation. It’s simple, fast
and totally secure. And don’t forget that your donation is tax
deductible.
