Page PageTwo Two THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25) The Seven EssenƟal Elements of Parish Life constantly interrelate, each nurturing and supporƟng the other with the communal celebraƟon of Sunday Eucharist at the center. Concluding Advent, Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Family, Epiphany, and the Baptism of the Lord we begin “Ordinary Time.” Well, who wants to be “ordinary?” Do you plan, as a goal, “ordinary?” May this year be an extra-ordinary year for St. Juliana Parish! Let’s be who we are; St. Juliana Falconieri Parish! Set apart from other parishes, people will know us, St. Juliana Falconieri, as no ordinary parish! In our pursuit of holiness, let’s take direction from our patroness, St. Juliana Falconieri. St. Juliana was a woman known for her devotion to the Eucharist, community, and learning the faith. Therefore, these characteristics, these charisms, are the gifts we receive and the gifts we give to other people. These shall be what make us extra-ordinary. Our saint’s devotion to the Eucharist is known by the Eucharistic host that is imprinted on the scapular part of her religious habit. The habit is the garb that sisters, brothers, and religious priests wear that sets them apart from “ordinary” people. The scapular part is that part which is worn over the shoulders (the scapula) covering the shoulders, heart, and chest. Near the end of her life, Juliana had such a horrible stomach disease that she was not able to consume even the Holy Eucharist. We are told that the consecrated Eucharist was placed over her heart on clean cloth. A miracle took place! The host could no longer be found but the imprint of it was found on her scapular. Her face was radiant! She and her community of sisters were forever transformed. She loved the Eucharist. Following the example of our saint – let us pray before the Blessed Sacrament as individual persons and as a faith community who are devoted to the Eucharist. By this devotion may we be transformed by our relationship to the Lord and his powerful presence in the Blessed Sacrament. Especially, may we gather for devotion to the Blessed Sacrament Exposed on the altar, the first Tuesday of each month. Juliana was a woman of community. As Clare of Assisi had been for the Franciscan Order and Catherine of Siena for the Dominican Order, Juliana was the great model and leader of women consecrated to the Servite Order. By their compassion and mercy, the community became a strong witness to Jesus. Following the example of our saint – let us become a religious community dedicated to Mary, the Mother of the Lord – compassionate, merciful, prayerful, and generous. Let us also be fun, joyful, even giddy! Juliana was the niece of Alexis Falconieri, one of the Seven Fathers of the Servite Order. Alexis was devoted to faith formation, the growth of the intellectual life of the Order. Following the example of our saint – I ask that you make time to participate in the faith formation opportunities which are offered in our parish community. During this year of faith, I ask that each of us follow the lead of St. Juliana and become stronger as we follow her example. This year may our neighbors recognize in us a community strengthened by the Eucharist. May those who encounter us encounter a community that is faithful, friendly, and fun because we are transformed by Jesus Christ, the Living God. Finally, this year let’s really become a community that knows the teachings of Jesus and puts into action what we know because we participate in the various faith formation opportunities that are provided. Bring your friends! We are no ordinary people! We are no ordinary parish. We are St. Juliana Falconieri Parish. And that’s just the parish side! We have a very dynamic Catholic grammar school! Come and see! What a proud community! No ordinary people here! GO FALCONS! GO FALCONS! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION - THE 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Although our tradition carries a long memory of marriage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in the Church. While we have evidence of priests blessing marriages as early as the second century, in the early period church leaders relied on civil authorities to manage marriage for everyone in society. In most cases, society yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male heads of households. From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair, managed by the father of the family, who acted as priest and guardian of family tradition. Each head wanted to keep the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides for his sons, paying a “bride price” as compensation for the loss of a skilled household worker. As creepy as that sounds, it was a step up from the kidnapping practice of earlier years. Even after the kidnapping raids stopped, the customs remained. Every wedding contained the ritualized kidnapping of the bride, the husband abducting his bride from the festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father’s gods from following her into her new religion. There, he fed her a piece of “sacred cake,” initiating her into a new way of life. It’s fascinating to see how customs endure, long after we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they originally expressed! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. SUNDAY, JANUARY 31, 2016 JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY R EFLECTION FOR J ANUARY 17, 2016 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Mary, whom Catholic tradition names “Mother of Mercy,” at Cana intercedes with her Son to show mercy toward thebridal couple: “Son, they have no wine.” But he does more! Jesus’ transformation of water into wine is a “sign” (John’s term for “miracle”) that God’s marriage with the whole human race has begun in Jesus’ person and ministry, a marriage that will be consummated on the cross: “It is finished”—we are saved! But before Jesus acts, Mary instructs the servers to prepare the way for Jesus’ miracle of mercy: “Do whatever he tells you.” During this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy, Mother Church, like Mother Mary, instructs us to share the Spirit’s manifold gifts—some of which Paul lists in today’s second reading—in generous service to the human family. Thus we prepare the way for Jesus’ new miracles of mercy, transforming life’s sometimes stagnant water into the refreshing wine of God’s mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. DIOCESAN NEWS Page Ten RETIREMENT OF BISHOP LUONG On December 21, 2105, the Vatican announced the retirement of Bishop Dominic Dinh Mai Luong, D.D. of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, effective January 2016. Father Steve Sallot, Vicar General, said in a statement: “We have been blessed to have Bishop Dominic and we congratulate him on his retirement and his service to the Lord for nearly 50 years as a faithful priest and bishop.” The first and only Vietnamese American Bishop in the U.S., Dominic Dinh Mai Luong was born on December 20, 1940, in Minh Cuong – about fifty miles from Hanoi – in the Province of Bui Chu in North Vietnam. He is the second youngest of the 11 children of Dominic Mai Ngoc Vy and Maria Pham (Khuou). His father was an official primarily involved in real estate transactions. The family, devout Catholics, belonged to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish. Unfortunately, because of the dangerous political instability plaguing the country, the family was forced to move a number of times. Young Dominic received a quality elementary education from a French-Vietnamese school. He attended secondary school at Trung Linh where he and a number of other students comprised the junior Seminary of Ho Ngoc Can for the Diocese of Bui Chu. In 1956 Dominic’s bishop sent him to the United States to continue his formation for the priesthood. Of course, this meant a long, difficult separation from his family and his country. He would not be able to return home until 1979. He was just 16 years old. After passing comprehensive studies testing by the State of New York, he studied for six years at the Diocesan Preparatory Seminary in Buffalo. After that, he went on to Saint Bernard’s Major Seminary in Rochester, New York. Besides the expected studies in philosophy, scripture, and theology, he also took science classes during summer vacations. On May 21, 1966, Bishop James A. McNulty ordained Dominic Mai Luong to the priesthood for the Diocese of Da Nang at the Basilica of Our Lady of Victory in Lackawanna, New York. Of course, he was unable to return to his home diocese because of the war raging in Vietnam at that time. Following his ordination, Father Luong completed his formal science studies, adding to a bachelor in physics, master’s degrees in biology and in psychology. He then returned to the junior seminary in Buffalo where he tought biology and also served as a chaplain to Saint Francis Hospital. For a time he also was associate pastor at Saint Louis Parish in Buffalo. Father Luong’s experience as a Vietnamese trained for the priesthood in America providentially suited him to be a leader when, at the fall of South Vietnam, many refugees came to the United States. A large portion of them went to the New Orleans area where Archbishop worked to help resettle them. He persuaded Father Luong, whom he met visiting in a refugee camp, to move to New Orleans and become Director of the Archdiocesan Vietnamese Apostolate. He accepted and served in this capacity from 1976 to 1983, when he became the Founding Pastor of Mary, Queen of Vietnam Parish. On the national level, Father Luong served as the Director of the National Center for the Vietnamese Apostolate, As the U.S. Conference of Bishops’ Director of Pastoral Care for Migrants and Refugees, he traveled throughout the country assisting various Vietnamese immigrant groups. Because of this important work, Pope John Paul II honored him with the title of Monsignor. Although Vietnamese immigrants settled in many places around the country, another very large concentration made their home in Southern California, principally in Orange County. The Vatican was aware of this circumstance, and so, when Bishop Brown petitioned for a second auxiliary bishop to assist him in his growing diocese, Pope John Paul II, on April 25, 2003, appointed Monsignor Dominic Mai Luong Titular Bishop of Cebaredes and Auxiliary Bishop of Orange. He was to be the first native-born Vietnamese Roman Catholic Bishop in the United States. Bishop Brown welcomed him and in his formal statement to the media noted: “Not only is he a person with deep spirituality and dedicated heart, but he also possesses well-honed leadership skills that will be very useful in his ministry here.” For his part, Bishop-elect Luong acknowledged: “By calling me the first Vietnamese priest to the office of episcopacy, His Holiness in particular, and the Church in the United States in general, recognize the many contributions with which 400,000 Vietnamese Catholics, over 600 priests, and more than 500 religious have enriched the Church in the United States, especially in the area of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.” In the presence of Cardinal Roger Mahoney and Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, the Apostolic Nuncio, Bishop Tod Brown ordained Bishop Dominic Mai Luong to the fullness of the priesthood on June 11, 2003, at Saint Columban Church in Garden Grove. Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes of New Orleans and Bishop Jaime Soto served as Principal Co-Consecrators. Among the many bishops in attendance were two from Vietnam: the Bishop of Thai Binh and the Bishop of My Tho. A very special guest was Bishop Luong’s older brother, Father Dominic Mai Loi, who had arrived just in time after an exhausting flight from Vietnam. In an article written for the Orange County Catholic, retired Bishop Norman McFarland observed: “ This is a happening of major historical significance and brings the greatest joy to all…It recognizes the enormous growth of the Church in Orange County in its brief life span, calling for additional assistance on the hierarchical level, and it speaks no less graphically of the role of the Vietnamese community as a burgeoning and integral part of the local Church.” Page Eleven LOCAL / DIOCESAN NEWS Dollars Pledged 502 $194,849 Please pray for the following members of our community presently serving in the military and for their families: Ryan T.
