Alumna of the Year - Jennifer Coyne
Saying that her Catholic education has been “instrumental in every part” of
her life, Jennifer Raley Coyne accepted the 2013 Alumna of the Year award. A
member of the Class of 1990, Jennifer was the second of six children to attend
SMR. Her brother Matthew graduated in 1988, Michael in 1993, Andrew in
1996, Jonathan in 1997 and Thomas in 2003.
She went onto study at Mount St. Mary’s University, and was inducted into
both the George Henry Miles Honor Society and the Monsignor Tierney
Honor Society. Upon graduation, she headed to the University of Baltimore
School of Law, making time to be a tutor at St. Ignatius Loyola Academy and
at public schools in Baltimore County. She became a member of the Heuisler
Honor Society and graduated magna cum laude.
Today, Jennifer is an attorney for Miles & Stockbridge P.C. and a member
of the bar in both Baltimore County and Carroll County. In 2012, for the
second time, she was named a Maryland Rising Star in the field of estate and
trust litigation. In addition, for 12 years, she has worked pro bono as a courtappointed counsel for the alleged disabled in guardianship matters. She is the
recipient of two awards from the Health Care Financing Administration for
her efforts to “improve the quality, efficiency, and economy of the services to
the public and for significant contributions to the Medicaid mission.”
Jennifer loved her time at SMR and fondly recalls decorating the class wall
in the gym for spirit week each year, going to basketball and soccer games,
and the senior National Honor Society trip. Above all, she loved the class
retreats, realizing that they were “not just about a connection to God, but about
connections to other people.”

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,
Every year the Annual Report gives me a chance to reflect on and to appreciate the
remarkable community we have here. We know it isn’t enough to educate a student only
in academics – any school can do that. The hallmark of a St. Mary’s Ryken education is
the forming of a student’s character academically, spiritually and morally.
You know St. Mary’s Ryken is a special place when you learn our recent graduates
completed over 19,500 hours of Christian service when only 9,500 were required. Or
when you learn that the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club had ten students qualify at the state
level and move on to the national competition in Anaheim, California. Whether it was an SMR student taking
first place in the St. Mary’s County Science Fair or seven chorus students and four orchestra members securing
the highest ratings at the state solo and ensemble competitions – your impact on the programs we are able to
offer is immediate.
A St. Mary’s Ryken education also means that we strive to continually update and improve our offerings to
students. We launched the one-to-one iPad program for the 2013-14 academic year to keep us on the cusp
of the changing culture in education. The iPads mean much more than e-books and lighter backpacks. The
devices enhance classroom collaboration and enable students to quickly find up-to-date information on a
subject they’re researching. They also function as a student’s academic hub – books, notes, calendars, syllabi,
homework, etc. - all the information they need in only one place.
We are building the future leaders of our businesses, schools and communities on the strength of your
commitment to St. Mary’s Ryken. Thank you for making a difference in every student’s life through your
generous gifts and support. Because of you, we are able to provide our faculty with excellent opportunities for
professional development and competitive salaries. We are able to expand extracurricular and Christian service
programs. We are able to help students who desire a Catholic education, but could otherwise not afford it, to
attend St. Mary’s Ryken.

Endowments & Scholarships
The Sean Brady Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1992 by Thomas Brady and Eileen Valentine in memory of their son,
Sean, a member of the Class of 1992. Two awards are made annually: one scholarship
is awarded to an incoming freshman and a second to a graduating senior for college
tuition.
The Class of 1985 Scholarship
Established in 2009 by the Class of 1985 - the first class to attend SMR all four years
- to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their graduation. The scholarship is awarded
to a student with a strong academic background.
The Laurie Collins Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of Laurie, a member of the Class of 1992, who loved her family,
school and church. Scholarships are awarded to incoming students who demonstrate
academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, and a commitment to
Christian service.
The James Dobry Scholarship Endowment
Created by Mr. Dobry in 2003 to provide assistance to students from St. Mary’s
County. Awarded to a student with a strong academic background.
The Kenneth B. Duke Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by family members to honor Kenneth, a 1939 graduate of St. Mary’s
Academy. The fund provides awards to two incoming freshmen.
The Bob Durbin Scholarship
Established in 2011 by the alumni of Ryken High School and St. Mary’s Ryken to
honor Mr. Bob Durbin, a beloved teacher, coach and mentor to many students for over
40 years. The scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates strong academic
achievement, leadership skills, and a strong commitment to service and volunteer work.
The Margaret Powers Ellis Scholarship
Established by the Hurlburt Family in memory of Peggy Ellis to honor her lifelong
commitment to Catholic education. Awards are made to students with strong
academic backgrounds who desire a Catholic secondary education and demonstrate a
commitment to service.
The William & Violet Fenwick Scholarship
Established by the Fenwick family in 2006 to honor the memory and continue
the legacy of their parents, William and Violet, who were committed to Catholic
education. Awards are made to students with strong academic and community service
backgrounds.
The Gabe and Joyce Gabrelcik & Sons Scholarship Endowment
Established by the Gabrelcik family in 2005 to honor the memory of Bob Gabrelcik,
a member of the Ryken High School Class of 1971. Bob was dedicated to Catholic
education and very generous in his financial assistance for students. Students must
demonstrate academic achievement.
The Kathy Gabrelcik Scholarship
This scholarship provides Southern Maryland students the chance to receive a
Catholic, college preparatory education. Mrs. Gabrelcik’s late husband, Bobby, was a
graduate of Ryken High School and their three children are all graduates of St. Mary’s
Ryken. The scholarship is awarded based on a student’s strong academic achievement
and exceptional community and Christian service.
The Joseph Marion Gough Endowment
Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Gough, a 1945 St. Mary’s Academy graduate and father
of two alumnae, personified commitment to Catholic education and citizenship in
St. Mary’s County. This fund, established by his estate in 2006, provides assistance
for talented students who desire a St. Mary’s Ryken education and are committed to
service in their community.

Through the continued generosity of alumni, parents and friends, St. Mary’s Ryken is able to offer both merit-based scholarships and
tuition assistance to academically talented students who may otherwise be unable to attend the school.

The GPG Scholarship Fund
Created in 2007 by four recent graduates: two brothers and two of their classmates,
who felt very fortunate that their parents sacrificed to give them the benefit of a
Catholic education. The recipient will be academically talented and will carry himself
or herself with dignity in all academic pursuits and extracurricular activities.
The Jarboe Family Scholarship
Dr. J. Patrick Jarboe, a 1951 graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, dedicated his life
to caring for the mind, body and spirit of those in his community. He believed
passionately in the dignity of life and was among the founders of Health Share of St.
Mary’s, which helps provide medical care for the underinsured and uninsured in the
county. While raising five children, he and his wife, Margaret, volunteered in the
church and community and were part of a missionary team that for 20 years provided
medical and dental care to the underserved people in Guatemala and Honduras. The
Jarboe Family Scholarship is for a student who desires to pursue studies in medicine
and health sciences through the SMR Xaverian Programs of Excellence and who,
like Dr. Jarboe, will act with compassion, decency and integrity in service to others.
The Patricia Kohlenbush Scholarship
Established by the Kohlenbush family to honor the memory of their mother, Patricia
Ann Kohlenbush, who was dedicated to the enrichment of Catholic education for her
children. Her legacy will enable young men and women to receive a St. Mary’s Ryken
education. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate of St. Peter’s Catholic School
who has demonstrated involvement in service to the community.
The Blaine Whorl Scholarship
Established in memory of Blaine, a member of the Class of 2002, the scholarship
recognizes students who share Blaine’s passion and interest in history and the
community. Scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen who are graduates of
a St. Mary’s County middle school and are active in community service activities or
clubs.
The John D. Yamnicky Sr. Memorial Scholarship
Established to honor the memory of this former parent and member of the board of
directors who lost his life at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Awarded to an
incoming freshman who has demonstrated academic achievement.
Scholarship established in 2012-13:
The Jenna Stone Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Jenna, a 2008 graduate, this scholarship will be awarded
to an incoming freshman from Father Andrew White School who shows strong
academic achievement and shares Jenna’s love of community and commitment to
exceptional Christian service.

The George and Eleanor Raley Scholarship Fund
Established in 2004 by the Raley family in honor their parents, George and Eleanor
Alvey Raley. Mr. and Mrs. Raley were strong advocates for Catholic education,
sending all six of their sons to Ryken High School. Mrs. Raley was a 1936 graduate
of St. Mary’s Academy, and Mr. Raley served as supervisor of facilities at RHS and
SMR from 1979-1991. Awards are made to students who are residents of St. Mary’s
County.
The Brother Romuald Stuedle, CFX, Scholarship Fund
Established by the Class of 1998 in memory of Brother Rom, a devoted faculty
member who taught chemistry and physics, and coached several sports during his
long tenure at St. Mary’s Ryken. This fund awards a scholarship to a rising senior
who demonstrates academic achievement and community involvement.

received offers of admission from 193
different colleges and universities, and 13
offers of admission into honors programs.
Ninety-nine percent of students will
pursue higher education, with the
remaining 1% pursuing opportunities
in the armed services, volunteer and
religious services, and the workforce.
Over 62% of the class (99 students)
received scholarship offers (academic and
athletic) totalling over $12.6 million and
45 students had offers totalling $100,000
or more.

This 2012-2013 Annual Report is a true celebration of the spirit that transcends all who are touched by St. Mary’s Ryken. We are blessed to have the opportunity to share good
news and photos, and the names of our benefactors who have selected SMR to be the recipient of their philanthropic support. This information provides a quick glance into all
that makes SMR such a special community.
Thirty years ago, I walked the halls of Xavier, Rupert and Paschal Halls as an SMR student. Little did I know at the time how my years at SMR would impact my future. I
am blessed to be able to give back to the school that provided me with so much; not only was I learning science, math, history, French and other academics, but also the values
of service, faith, charity, humility and honor. Coming back to SMR has been an opportunity to bring the culmination of my education and professional experience into a true
mission – a mission to help others who aspire to become all that they can by earning the strong foundation provided by St. Mary’s Ryken.
As I read the names of those who have provided support to the Advancement efforts at SMR, I am humbled. Although you may not have the chance to see your philanthropy
in action every day, I can assure you that your gifts are making a difference. I frequently take time to walk past at least one classroom and experience the joy of hearing students
in prayer at the start of each class, seeing students actively participating in hands-on lessons, and watching students use logic and opinion to debate topics with one another. I
also take a moment to thank God for each of the students in that room, for without the support of alumni, parents, grandparents, businesses, faculty and friends, we would not
have students from a variety of backgrounds. We would not have our amazing faculty. We would not have the best technology. It is because of your support of our SMR Fund,
endowments, athletics and other programs that we are able to do more for our students than we would be able to do through tuition alone.

or student scholarship, provide a gift to the
SMR Fund for tuition assistance and faculty
development, or leave a gift to specific

Legacy gifts can be given in a variety of ways:
•Bequest – The easiest and most common
way of making a planned gift is through a
bequest in your will. You can designate a
specific monetary amount, a percentage of
your estate, or a specific appreciated asset.
•Life Insurance – You can designate St.
Mary’s Ryken as the beneficiary of a policy.
You can also make St. Mary’s Ryken the
owner and beneficiary of an existing policy
you no longer need.
•Life Estate – You can deed your home or
vacation property to St. Mary’s Ryken and
retain the rights to live in and/or receive
income from the property for as long as you
live. A life estate gift often reduces capital
gains, inheritance and estate taxes and offers
an income tax deduction as well.
•Life Income Gifts – Charitable trusts,
such as charitable lead trusts and charitable
remainder trusts, provide you and/or your
designated beneficiary with income for life.
Upon your passing, the school receives your
gift. Life income gifts generally reduce or
eliminate certain taxes and guarantee an
income for life.
