2014 Annual Report - The Summit Foundation
2014 Annual Report
Partners for a
Stronger Community
Helping people make a difference in the lives of others.
Vision:
The Summit Foundation is recognized as the leading philanthropic
Dear Friends of The Summit Foundation:
organization for Summit County and its neighbors. We are committed to
How The Foundation has grown since we opened our doors in 1984! As I look back on the past 30 years, I recall the ups and downs of the economy, the
neighborhoods that grew, the friends we’ve made and the powder days we’ve shared. Through it all, one thing hasn’t changed: the solid commitment of our
local citizens and businesses to make Summit County an even greater place.
creating ever better mountain communities by providing leadership that
results in improving the quality of life for residents and guests.
In 2014, the generosity of this community soared to new heights: The Summit Foundation distributed $2 million to 94 local nonprofit agencies that serve our
neighbors in countless ways. In addition, a record $230,000 in scholarships was awarded to 99 students. We continue to enjoy a thriving partnership with our
ski area partners, who provide the Patron Pass Medallions (all 301 sold out again). Our many friends responded to annual requests for contributions, existing and new contributors
signed up to donate a portion of their paychecks through the Employee Giving Program, and a growing number of you connected with us through Colorado Gives Day in December.
As we look forward to many more decades helping our community thrive, an increasing focus has been to encourage planned giving through our Peaks Society, in which donors
name The Summit Foundation in their estate. We were especially honored by a generous gift from the estate of Norman L. Ringhand, a long-time Frisco resident who passed away
unexpectedly last April (see page 25 for more information about this important legacy). This gift, and others like it, will allow The Foundation to continue its important work now
and in the future.
The Summit Foundation moved its offices to the newly-opened Breckenridge Grand Vacations Community Center on Harris Street in Breckenridge. The renovation of this historic
icon is a perfect example of collaboration among government, non-profits and business to preserve our heritage and enrich our community. Please come by our offices for a look!
Finally, we bid farewell to Lee Zimmerman, who is retiring as Executive Director after eight years. During Lee’s tenure, both donations and disbursements more than doubled. He
also helped oversee Foundation initiatives for the Pre-Collegiate Program and the CATCH Afterschool Program. Lee has been a true friend to the
community and his leadership and kind demeanor will be truly missed.
Looking ahead, we are pleased to welcome our next Executive Director, Jeanne Bistranin. A Colorado native, Jeanne comes to us with a wealth of
experience gained at Adolph Coors and US WEST Foundations, and I hope you have a chance to meet her soon.
Thank you for a successful and impactful year from all of us at The Summit Foundation.
Sincerely,
Kevin McDonald

With a grant from The Summit Foundation, the Summit
Concert Band hosted Music at the Summit Adult Band Camp
in June 2014. Held at the Riverwalk Center, the culminating
concert was enjoyed by more than 650 people. While there are
many opportunities for citizens to hear musical performances
in Summit County, The Summit Foundation helped provide
a unique opportunity for over 65 adults from 17 states to
participate in Adult Band Camp and provide free performances
to locals and visitors alike.
One participant wrote: “We love Music at the Summit.
Everything about it was wonderful - music selection, conductor,
housing, events, location, and all the people there! We
definitely will attend again!”

Helping families gain access to early childhood
education by providing much needed tuition
assistance reduces the stress of financial concerns and engages parents earlier in their
child’s education. Every tuition dollar provides for quality teachers, first-rate instruction
and healthy, safe learning environments.
Summit School District’s Early Childhood Program provides enriching, developmentally
appropriate experiences for young children, including those with educational challenges
or who need extra support in order to be ready for school. The program empowers and
supports families as partners in education and collaborates with the community in providing services to these children and their families to ensure future educational success.
Summit School District serves more than 160 young children in nine preschool classrooms. The purpose of the preschool program is to serve children ages 3 to 5 years old
from diverse backgrounds who have identified disabilities. Each of the programs have
received the highest quality rating by the state, ensuring that the littlest learners in
Summit are getting the best possible start to their education.
The Summit Foundation is a valued partner in helping us support families and build a
better, stronger community.

The Summit County Rescue Group (SCRG) has relied for many years on four
All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) to help in searches and, in some instances, allowing
rescuers to directly access critically injured patients in the backcountry. ATVs are
also often used to shuttle rescuers up unimproved roads and trails to where
they can start hiking, shaving miles (and hours) off a search. However, having
only four ATVs directly limited the efficacy of any response.
To enhance SCRG’s capability to quickly field responders, the team requested
funding from The Summit Foundation that would help in the purchase of an
additional ATV. This particular vehicle would also be sufficiently powerful that it
could pull the Orion (a shock mounted trailer that will take a patient, paramedic/
EMT, and medical equipment). Thanks to generous grants from the Highlands
at Breckenridge Advised Fund and The Summit Foundation, the ATV was
purchased and immediately placed into service. It was used on several missions
during 2014, by far the busiest year for SCRG since its inception in 1973.
Once again, The Summit Foundation’s grant funds are helping save lives in
Summit County.

Foundation, turf and cages with netting were added in the Training Facility.
Additional equipment and instructional aides were also purchased.
The Training Facility offers baseball camps during school breaks and allows
local competitive travel teams the ability to practice in the still snowy Spring
months. The facility also serves as a place for any child to practice, no matter
what level they plan to compete at. In 2014, the 10U team from Summit
Extreme was the 2nd runner up in the UAAA Tournament for the state of
Colorado. Summit Extreme and SYBS and we credit much of this success to

three-year grant to
Lake County PreCollegiate Program
The Lake County School District is advancing college and career readiness
for students through the Lake County Pre-Collegiate Program.
Although post-secondary readiness has been on the radar in Leadville for
many years, the reality of having a sustainable program began in March
2014, when members of the Leadville community came together to develop
the Pre-Collegiate Action Team. After several months of research, the group
concluded it was most interested in developing a program modeled after the
Summit County Pre-Collegiate Program.
Thanks to a three-year commitment by The Summit Foundation, Colorado
Mountain College, and the Lake County School District, funding was
secured and a program coordinator, Kelly Hofer, was hired.
Since the program’s inception in Fall 2014, Kelly has been focusing on
program development and student recruitment. She is actively enrolling students for Fall 2015, as well as for the summer Pre-Collegiate
Residential Program at CU Boulder.
The Pre-Collegiate Program will work with students in grades seven
through 12 to offer comprehensive post-secondary preparation. Assistance
with college and career exploration, college admissions processes, and financial aid will be provided. The Lake County program will also consist
of a mentoring and tutoring component to enhance student enrichment.
The Lake County School District, students, and families are thrilled to
have this additional resource. The Pre-Collegiate Program will help Lake
County students know that they are capable of going to college, that college
is affordable, and that, yes, their dreams can come true.

The Summit Foundation Takes Initial Steps to Restructure Grant Process and Measure Outcomes
Throughout 2014, The Summit Foundation’s Board of Trustees worked diligently to identify ways
the organization can restructure grantmaking and better measure the impact and outcomes of grant
allocations. With the guidance of Mission Spark, a consulting firm specializing in this area, board
members reviewed best practices in grantmaking and outcome measurement and met with donors,
board members and area nonprofit organizations to identify outcome measurement processes that
would provide information on the impact of The Summit Foundation grants and the corresponding
programs of our community nonprofits.
The overall intent of this initiative is to better quantify the impact
of our grants - ultimately to grant smarter. We anticipate that this
Initiative will enable The Summit Foundation to better demonstrate
the impacts of our grants to our donors and communities, as well
as to measure how well we are performing against our stated
Mission of “…improving the quality of life…in Summit and
neighboring Communities.”
As a result, The Summit Foundation redefined the funding categories into five key “impact areas”.
Through these impact areas, The Summit Foundation intends to be able to measure and communicate
the impact of our grantee initiatives.
The full implementation of this Outcomes Measurement Initiative
will be gradually and carefully phased in over several grant cycles.

I would like to thank you for your support years ago as a Summit High School
graduate. I was granted a scholarship in 1999 to obtain a bachelor degree. Since then,
I have completed veterinary school, and work as a veterinarian in the Fort Collins area.
Additional sophomore, junior and senior college scholarships were awarded
from donor advised funds established at The Summit Foundation. These awards
totaled $34,800.
Thank you for helping me pursue an education and allowing me to serve the Colorado
community.

*Recognizes members of The Peaks Society –
individuals who have named The Summit
Foundation as a beneficiary in their estate
plan.
Thanks to more
than 2,400 donors,
$1.7 million was
contributed to
The Summit
Foundation’s
operating fund
in 2014.
A bequest is one way to leave a legacy gift to your community. A bequest is
simply a gift you make through your will or trust which indicates your desire to
leave something of value toward The Summit Foundation’s future work. A charitable bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the value of your
total estate, a particular asset, a gift of stock or life insurance or even real estate.
The Peaks Society of The Summit Foundation was established to honor and
recognize the generosity and foresight of individuals who have planned for the future
by designating a gift in their estate to meet ongoing community needs.
A planned gift may also be made through your IRA, a qualified retirement plan,
life insurance, or a trust and your gift may be a percentage of your estate or a
stated dollar amount.
Naming The Summit Foundation as a beneficiary in your will, trust, retirement plan,
or insurance policy can be the simplest gift to permanently link your long-standing
support to The Summit Foundation.
Some planned gifts can even provide an income stream to you or the person you
designate, and may generate a current income tax deduction for you, the donor.
In many cases, making a charitable planned gift can help your loved ones offset
estate taxes.
The Peaks Society celebrates those who have made a commitment to The Summit
Foundation to continue to support charitable causes after their lifetimes. Thank you
to these individuals who have let The Summit Foundation know of their planned gift
intentions. We hope others are inspired by their example.

society
Gifts of all shapes and sizes are welcome. The spirit behind every gift is the same.
If you have made a charitable estate gift to The Summit Foundation, or are
considering making a planned gift to recognize The Foundation, please consider
informing The Summit Foundation so we may also recognize you as a member
of The Peaks Society. Beyond preparing a gift to The Summit Foundation and
informing us, members have no obligations.
To learn more about planned giving and/or The Peaks Society, contact The
Summit Foundation’s Director of Development Kasey Provorse.
Thank you for considering The Summit Foundation in your legacy planning.
In 2014, nine donors notified The Summit
Foundation of their planned gift intentions, increasing
membership in the Peaks Society by 35 percent.
This estate gift has been dedicated to a new board-designated
fund within The Summit Foundation’s Endowment Fund, The
Peaks Society Fund, which recognizes the legacy of individuals like
Norm that have made planned gifts to The Summit Foundation.
The Peaks Society Fund will make annual distributions of 5.0%
IN MEMORIAM: Norman L. Ringhand
Leaves his entire estate to The Summit Foundation
In 2014, The Summit Foundation began accepting a significant
gift from Norman L. Ringhand. Norm Ringhand passed away on April 7, 2014 at his home in Frisco,
Colorado. He was 71 years old. He left his entire estate, valued over $1 million, to The Summit
Foundation.
of the value of the Fund (determined by the Fund value at The
Summit Foundation’s fiscal year end, currently September 30)
in grants to local nonprofit organizations. Through this Fund,
disbursements to nonprofit organizations will be augmented in
semi-annual grant cycles and the Grants Committee will be
encouraged to make recommendations to the Board of Trustees
on the greatest needs in the community.
Norman graduated from the University of Montana in Missoula with a B.S. in Forest Management in
1966. He entered the army in service to his country through the ROTC program as a 2nd Lieutenant
on Aug. 2, 1966, where he served in Vietnam as part of the Army Corps of Engineers as a combat
engineer until his honorable discharge on Aug. 21, 1968, as a 1st Lieutenant. Norm received many
honors including the Purple Heart for a wound he received during his service.
After positions in Madison, Wisconsin and then in Santa Fe, N.M., Ringhand relocated to Frisco
in 1978 where he worked for Robillard and Associates. After Robillard, Norm created Ringhand
Engineering and Management and through this enterprise he served as the District Administrator
of the Snake River Water District in Keystone. He worked for the district from 1984 to 2002. During
his tenure, the River Run Base area at the base of Keystone was developed.
Lt. Norman Ringhand was proud of his military service. He always flew the flag above his front door.
Norm always wore his dog tags and some medals on Veteran’s Day. His friends would often hear
stories of his service.
Norm also loved cars. During his early years in Frisco he purchased a Model T from a friend. He
enjoyed his cars a great deal and would drive them during parades and take his nieces and nephew
for rides. He eventually donated his Model T to the Frisco Historical Society.
This Fund allows immediate community impact for those who
make planned gifts to The Summit Foundation, particularly
when the donor has not communicated to The Summit Foundation
a specific intention for their gift.
Proceeds received through bequests, stock transfers, annuities,
trusts, retirement plans or insurance policies may be directed to
The Peaks Society Fund. In addition, donors may choose to
designate any remaining assets in their donor advised funds to
roll into The Peaks Society Fund after their death.
The Summit Foundation is honored by the generosity of Norm
Ringhand and 60 others who have notified The Summit Foundation
of their planned gift intentions. The Summit Foundation invites
others to follow Norm Ringhand’s legacy in dedicating these kinds

The cornerstone of The Summit Foundation’s
fundraising efforts is the Patron Pass program,

Ski Resort Contributions Build a Stronger Community
Thanks to the generosity of Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Beaver Creek Resort,
Breckenridge Ski Resort, Copper Mountain Resort, Keystone Resort and
Vail Mountain, the Patron Pass Program has been the cornerstone of the
fund-raising efforts for The Summit Foundation.
The contribution of transferable ski privileges has created a partnership between The Summit Foundation, Vail Resorts, Copper Mountain
Resort and Arapahoe Basin, and illustrates the commitment each of the ski
resorts provide to support vital and treasured services in our community.
The partnership translates into participation by ski area representatives
being part of the grant award process and giving back to the Summit
County community.
Anchored by the transferable skiing privileges, which are provided
complimentary to The Foundation from the above resorts, the Patron Pass
Program earned $1 million in funding for The Summit Foundation in 2014.
This funding represented a significant portion of the $2.2 million awarded
by The Foundation and its partners in 2014. As the 2014/2015 season
began, the 301 passes allocated to The Summit Foundation were fully
committed for the third year in the organization’s history.
In December 2013, the ski areas allocated one additional medallion to
The Summit Foundation specifically to raise funds for the Youth Giving
Council’s mini-grant allocations. This allocation continued for the
2014/2015 season. The Summit Foundation is extremely grateful to the
ski areas for extending this additional pass and providing a specific
purpose for its revenue.
The Summit Foundation thanks the ski areas and all of our donors for your
commitment to our community and the support received by The Summit
Foundation through the Patron Pass Program.
For more information on the Patron Pass Program and additional benefits offered by the program,
contact The Summit Foundation’s Director of Development Kasey Provorse or visit summitfoundation.org.

Establishing an advised fund allows donors to make
a gift to The Summit Foundation and then remain
actively involved in suggesting charitable causes
In 2014, the following funds were held within The Summit Foundation’s endowment fund.

to designate gifts. By creating a donor advised or
scholarship fund, a donor receives many benefits
similar to those of a private charitable foundation
but without the costs, administrative responsibilities and government reporting requirements.
In addition to donor advised funds, The Summit
Foundation administers agency endowment funds
and dedicated funds for various organizations.
These funds provide the opportunity for named
organizations to receive annual income from these
“endowed” investments, while providing a nest egg
for the organization into the future. Such funds
may be established within The Summit Foundation
and are invested and managed in accordance with

The Summit Foundation’s insight and involvement with the nonprofits in our community
is invaluable and was a deciding factor for me in establishing a donor advised fund with
The Foundation…I appreciate that The Foundation will let me know of opportunities
to make an impact in our community as they see gaps in areas that I have interest.

2014 EVENTS
The Summit Foundation raised $195,000 in net revenue through its fund-raising
events in 2014. For many years, The Summit Foundation’s events have served as
the entry point for involvement with The Foundation. The Foundation’s primary
events
events in 2014 were a 30th Anniversary Celebration, Kentucky Derby Party, Annual
Golf Tournament, Great Rubber Duck Race, and Parade of Homes.
30th Anniversary
On March 29th, 250 people filled the Silverthorne Pavilion to celebrate
the 30th Anniversary of The Summit Foundation. Guests enjoyed delicious
desserts from Butterhorn Bakery, Dining Redefined, Higgles Ice Cream,
Keystone Resort, and Sugar. Remarks were made by Executive Director
Lee Zimmerman, current Board of Trustees President Kevin McDonald, and
past Presidents Larry Beebe and Meg Lass. The lobby was filled with 30
years of memorabilia, including scrap books and all 30 years of Patron Pass
medallions. The 6 Million Dollar Band performed fun 80’s hits and kept
the crowd dancing with their high-energy performance. The Foundation is
grateful to all who came and supported this great event.
On April 30th, Which Wich and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in
Silverthorne donated 30 percent of their day’s sales – nearly $1,000 – to
The Summit Foundation. Various businesses from throughout the county
ordered lunch for their employees and the staff of The Summit Foundation
delivered lunches to their respective workplaces. Throughout the lunch
hours, the entire restaurant filled with Summit County locals who dined in
support of The Summit Foundation. The Summit Foundation thanks Kelsey
and Seth Lyons, owners of Which Wich and Rocky Mountain Chocolate
Factory Silverthorne, for their generosity in honoring our 30th Anniversary.

Annual Golf Tournament
The Summit Foundation hosted its
27th annual Breckenridge Grand
Vacations Golf Tournament in early
June. Saturday evening began
with a Welcome Party dinner and
Calcutta auction hosted by Vail Resorts
Epic Promise. Skyy Vodka provided
spirits to enjoy the evening while former
Denver Broncos running back, Reggie Rivers, emceed the lively auction.
Breckenridge Mayor John Warner hosted a breakfast on Sunday morning prior
to the shotgun start. All 144 golfers, many from out of state, completed 18 holes
of scramble tournament play at Breckenridge Golf Club where an unfortunate
low temperature of 37 degrees was accompanied by wet and windy weather.
The victors were repeat champions, Team Assurance’s David Suchomski, Doug
Suchomski, Josh Knipp, and Jake Himmelman. Players enjoyed a delicious
on-course BBQ provided by John Daisy of Fatty’s Pizzeria and the Breckenridge
Restaurant Association.
Kentucky Derby Party
Over 100 people supported The
Summit Foundation on May 3rd at
Blue River Bistro in Breckenridge at
its 6th Annual Kentucky Derby Party.
The event featured a VIP party with
a scrumptious Southern buffet and
unlimited mint juleps. Attendees
wore their best Derby attire (hats
included!) and came to cheer on the
horses.

At the Interval International awards reception, the top five teams were honored
with prizes; along with individual prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin,
most accurate drive and longest putt.
The annual tournament raised a record setting $78,000 for The Foundation’s grants
and scholarship program. The Foundation is thankful to all the players for their
continued support of this long-standing tournament. Special thanks as well to
title sponsor Breckenridge Grand Vacations. The Town of Breckenridge and the
Breckenridge Golf Club were generous hosts and their staff did a great job at
welcoming all our tournament guests.

Celebrating 30 Years
The Summit Foundation is appreciative of
the Summit County Builders Association
for this wonderful event and is thankful to
continue to be recognized as the event’s
beneficiary. Over $30,000 was contributed to
The Summit Foundation during this year’s tour
of 15 homes.
Great Rubber Duck Race
On Saturday, August 30th, more than 9,100 rubber
ducks raced down a roaring Blue River for The Summit
Foundation’s 27th Annual Great Rubber Duck Race.
This long standing community event raised $92,000 for
The Summit Foundation.
The Hudson Auto Source Kids Duck Dash sent 796
ducks down the Blue River with the help of Red, White,
& Blue Fire Department and their impressive ladder
truck. Age-appropriate prizes donated by Peak-A-BooToys, Vail Resorts Echo, and Frisco Adventure Park
were awarded to the top 56 ducks. Tom Macleish won
the grand prize of a week vacation, which was donated
by Interval International. A record setting 244 ducks participated in the FirstBank
Business Battle Duck Race. Frisco business Stork &
Bear had the swiftest duck, and their staff and clients
will enjoy a backcountry ski trip for 12 at Ski Cooper,
donated by FirstBank. Over 60 businesses also participated in a duck decorating contest in which the ducks
were displayed at FirstBank Breckenridge for the week
leading up to the race. Decorated by the Owner Relations Department of Breckenridge Grand Vacations,
the creative duck “Horton Hears a Quack” won the first
place prize, a glass fusing party at Ready, Paint, Fire in

events
The Breckenridge Grand Vacations Great Rubber
Duck Race completed the trilogy of races. Excitement
grew as participants watched 9,131 ducks swiftly race
down the Blue River in hopes of securing one of 84
prizes. New this year, the first three ducks crossing the
finish line were all grand prize winners. Penny Banks, Joe
Natale, and Michael Nowotny owned these three

PLANNED GIFTS
WAYS TO GIVE
Making a gift to The Summit Foundation can be as simple as writing a check or attending an event hosted by The Foundation or as
sophisticated as designing an individual estate plan. Many charitable giving options are noted here. These gifts can be made through
specific programs like those noted below. More details on each of these opportunities can be found by visiting summitfoundation.org.
annual gifts
ANNUAL GIFTS
Outright Gifts
Cash, check, credit card, and stock contributions are the most common ways to give. These donations, which offer
maximum tax advantages, are accepted throughout the year and may be designated to the annual operating fund
or The Foundation’s Endowment Fund.
Patron Pass Program
Fully transferable ski privileges generously provided by Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Breckenridge Ski Resort,
Copper Mountain Resort, Keystone Resort, Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek Resort is at the heart of this program.
Complimentary golf and Nordic skiing, as well as discounts throughout the county for lodging, dining, services
and activities are also offered through the program.
Employee Giving Program
More than 25 businesses partner with The Summit Foundation to encourage their employees to pledge a payroll
deduction to benefit The Foundation. In many cases, the company matches the gifts designated by individual employees. The Foundation welcomes additional partnerships with employers throughout the community.
Special Events & Projects
The Foundation raises monies through a variety of special events and projects each year. Become involved
by sponsoring, volunteering, donating products or services, or by simply attending one of these events. These
include an annual golf tournament in June and the great rubber duck race the Saturday of Labor Day weekend.
The Summit Foundation is also recognized as the beneficiary of the Breck Crest Mountain Marathon and Summit
County Builders Association’s Parade of Homes. Annually, The Summit Foundation hosts a grant and scholarship
reception in June and a celebration of Philanthropy Awards in November.

Celebrating 30 Years
Designated Fund
A designated fund is traditionally created to benefit a particular nonprofit
organization. The fund is created in the initial donor’s name or in the name of
the designated organization and allows contributions from additional donors. A
spending policy could state that an annual grant to the designated organization
would be paid equal to a certain percent of the principal value of the fund based
on a four-year moving average. Other spending policies or formulas may be
created upon development of the initial designated fund agreement.
Do you dream about doing more for your loved ones AND for the causes you care most
about? Making a planned gift to The Foundation can provide significant tax benefits,
while also permanently linking your long-standing support to The Summit Foundation.
Following are a variety of tools for giving that will make a lasting difference
Donor Advised Fund
A Donor Advised Fund is a simple, flexible way for a donor to provide a major
charitable gift to The Summit Foundation. It is a gift that can be made in a l
ump sum, over a period of time or through a bequest. A minimum of $25,000 is
gifted to The Foundation and invested with The Foundation’s other Endowment
Funds by professional portfolio managers. Gifts are distributed from the
income, in accordance with the donor or representative’s “advice”, to charitable
organizations. Up to 50 percent of the Donor Advised Fund distributions may be
designated outside The Summit Foundation’s geographic distribution area of
Summit County and our neighboring communities.
Field of Interest Fund
A field of interest fund may be established for the benefit of certain nonprofit
organizations delivering specifically defined services, such as a Fund for Arts in
Breckenridge. The fund is created in the initial donor’s name or in the name of
the type of services (field of interest) it was designed to support. Contributions
may be accepted from additional donors. Spending formulas may be created
upon development of the initial agreement. A committee might oversee the
distributions.
Scholarship Fund
Bequest
A scholarship fund may be established with a minimum contribution of $10,000
(contribution may be made over several years) to support post-secondary
education for local high school graduates. The Summit Foundation assists with
collecting student scholarship applications and the review of applicants to make
a recommendation that meets the qualifications agreed upon by the donor(s).
Scholarships are distributed directly to the institution selected by the
scholarship recipient.
Naming The Foundation as the beneficiary in your will, trust or qualified
retirement plan can be the simplest gift. Because these assets often carry a
heavy income tax obligation to your heirs, they can be a particularly attractive
source for funding your charitable gifts.
Agency Endowment Fund
A collective group of donors, an individual or couple, or a nonprofit organization
may establish an agency endowment fund with The Summit Foundation. Agency
endowment funds are established by donors who wish to benefit a particular
charitable organization. Established with a minimum contribution of $10,000,
agency endowment funds are held and managed by The Summit Foundation on
behalf of these nonprofit organizations. The funds are invested with The Summit
Foundation’s endowment assets and the designated nonprofit organization in
turn receives annual distributions from the interest earned. The organization or
any of its donors may add to these funds at any time.
45 |
Gifts of Real Estate
And other property can be donated to The Foundation, allowing a donor to
establish a charitable gift annuity and/or receive maximum tax benefits.
All gifts are professionally managed and pooled for diversified investment and economies of scale and to
increase their charitable impact. Investment performance is reviewed quarterly by financial experts and
monitored by the Finance Committee and The Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

290,224 Thank you to Lee Zimmerman
for eight years of dedicated service to
The Summit Foundation and Summit County
At the end of 2014, Lee Zimmerman was wrapping up his time as
Executive Director of The Summit Foundation. During Lee’s tenure,
grant and scholarship distributions doubled to more than $2.2 million annually. Donations also more than doubled, with a significant
increase in the number of donor advised, scholarship, designated and
agency endowment funds established with The Summit Foundation.
Lee was instrumental in the development of special initiatives at The
Foundation, including and Pre-Ccollegiate program with Summit
School District and the CATCH after school program.
Olaf Infante, a Pre-Collegiate student at Summit High School, mailed
a note to The Foundation that shared: “Mr. Zimmerman is the best
person ever for giving us (Pre-Collegiate students) a huge opportunity
and keeping our dreams going.”
Beyond The Foundation, Lee had been an active member of Summit
County Rotary and an ever present force in our community, chairing
many committees for nonprofit collaborative efforts.
Through the establishment of Donor Advised Funds,
Scholarship Funds, Agency Endowment Funds,
memorial gifts and general contributions,
185 donors gave $850,000 to The Summit
Foundation’s Endowment Fund in 2014,
a 22 percent increase over endowment fund
gifts received in 2013. In addition, over
$530,000 was received from the Estate of
Norman L. Ringhand,
bringing the total Endowment Fund
contributions to $1.38 million in 2014.
“His commitment to our nonprofit partners and to our
neighbors guided his very long days and he was known to be
a keen thoughtful listener, a compassionate leader, and someone
who offered a warm welcome to everyone he encounters,”
Trustee Maureen Westerland shared.
In celebration of his dedication to the Summit County
community, Lee was honored with the “Spirit of the Summit”
award at the 24th annual Summit County Philanthropy Awards
in November 2014. A scholarship awarded to a Pre-Collegiate
program graduate has also been created in Lee’s name.
“Lee has been a true friend to the community and his leadership
and kind demeanor will be truly missed,” Trustee Kevin
McDonald added.
