Training is imperative to maintain the incomparable services
provided to the Lee’s Summit Community. The Training
Division presents classroom lecture, teleconferencing, practical
instruction, and drill to all members at their stations or at the
state-of-the-art training facility at Station 7. Specialized training
is provided for members to acquire or retain the licenses and
certificates needed to meet state and federal requirements.

The Fire Prevention Division conducts activities to enhance
the safety of our citizens. Last year over 3,000 inspections of
new and existing commercial buildings were conducted by
on duty fire crews and Prevention staff. Along with making
sure that the City’s built environment is safe, the Division also
oversees numerous safety education programs such as the
Safety Education Program in the schools that provides life
safety lessons to every 1st, 3rd and 5th grade student twice
a year, along with numerous station tours, daycare visits,
block parties, and open house events during Downtown
Days and Oktoberfest. Other responsibilities include the
issuing of burning permits; fireworks tent inspections;
hazardous materials permitting, and fire investigation. The Lee’s Summit Fire Department is actively involved
in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
training by hosting classes as the department’s Station 7
training facility. The CERT program is an integral part of
helping our citizens and city workers be better prepared
for the possibility of a local disaster or significant
emergency. CERT training skills enable civilians to
protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors in
the event of an emergency. Lee’s Summit citizens and city
department employees demonstrate their commitment to
community through their participation in the extensive
training program. Topics covered include disaster
preparedness, medical operations, fire suppression,
light search and rescue, and terrorism response. The
CERT program utilizes instructors from our local
utility representatives at KCP&L, MGE, American
Red Cross, and the Lee’s Summit Police Department.
The International Association of Firefighters Local 2195
and the Lee’s Summit Fire Department hosted a program
for civic leaders as well as members of the media known as
FIRE OPS 101. The day long program included hands-on fire
fighting and rescue operations under controlled supervision
of Lee’s Summit Firefighters. Participants learned exactly
how challenging it is to keep our community safe.
