Station #4 404 NE Woods Chapel Road 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 Station #2 2000 NE Rice Road The Department’s Communications Division is operated 24 hours a day 7 days a week answering emergency and non-emergency calls from throughout Jackson and Cass counties. This year the Communications Division began learning basic Spanish for 911 operators to better serve our patrons. The Communications Division is also serves as a regional communications center. They not only serve the City of Lee’s Summit, they also provide communication services for the Fort Osage Fire Protection District, Lake Lotawana, Lone Jack, Prairie Township, Sni Valley, West Peculiar, and the Western Cass Fire Protection Districts. Station #3 210 SW Pryor Road New Station #2 In 2007, the citizens passed a “no-tax increase” bond issue for the replacement of Fire Station #2. The Fire Department had outgrown the current station, which was built in 1967. The new station will house Truck 2 and is designed to meet future growth of the department for years to come. Construction began in the fall of 2010 with an anticipated opening in Spring 2011. It is located at 2000 NE Rice Road. The largest division within the Department is that of Emergency Services. This division is responsible for responding to all emergencies and non-emergencies within the City of Lee’s Summit, Greenwood, and Unity Village. The largest number of calls involve emergency medical calls, but also include fires, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and severe weather related incidents. In addition, the Lee’s Summit Fire Department provides emergency services to the City of Greenwood and Unity Village. The Training Division presents classroom lecture, teleconferencing, practical instruction, and drill to all members at their stations or at the state-of-the-art training facility at Station 7. Specialized training is provided for members to acquire or retain the licenses and certificates needed to meet state and federal requirements. 2010 2007 2008 2009 The Fire Prevention Division conducts activities to enhance the safety of our citizens. Last year over 3,000 inspections of new and existing commercial buildings were conducted by on duty fire crews and Prevention staff. Along with making sure that the City’s built environment is safe, the Division also oversees numerous safety education programs such as the Safety Education Program in the schools that provides life safety lessons to every 1st, 3rd and 5th grade student twice a year, along with numerous station tours, daycare visits, block parties, and open house events during Downtown Days and Oktoberfest. Other responsibilities include the issuing of burning permits; fireworks tent inspections; hazardous materials permitting, and fire investigation. The Lee’s Summit Fire Department is actively involved in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training by hosting classes as the department’s Station 7 training facility. The CERT program is an integral part of helping our citizens and city workers be better prepared for the possibility of a local disaster or significant emergency. CERT training skills enable civilians to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors in the event of an emergency. Lee’s Summit citizens and city department employees demonstrate their commitment to community through their participation in the extensive training program. Topics covered include disaster preparedness, medical operations, fire suppression, light search and rescue, and terrorism response. The CERT program utilizes instructors from our local utility representatives at KCP&L, MGE, American Red Cross, and the Lee’s Summit Police Department. The International Association of Firefighters Local 2195 and the Lee’s Summit Fire Department hosted a program for civic leaders as well as members of the media known as FIRE OPS 101. The day long program included hands-on fire fighting and rescue operations under controlled supervision of Lee’s Summit Firefighters. Participants learned exactly how challenging it is to keep our community safe.
