High School Summer Reading 2012v18
Just a Reminder! There are many factors that affect the relationship between a reader and text, including content, age-appropriateness, reader interests, suitability of the text, and text difficulty. The Lexile measure of a book—a measure of text difficulty—is a good starting point in the book-selection process, with other factors then being considered. The Lexile measure should never be the only factor considered when selecting a book. Name:__________________________________ Parents, please help your child choose appropriate reading this summer. Parents, please help your child choose appropriate reading this summer. When students return to school in the fall, they will be required to complete a writing assessment related to their summer reading. Students may also elect to read a book that is not on the list, if it is within their Lexile range. ***A Lexile range is included to help students select books that correspond with the Lexile score found on their 8th grade CRCT report. What is a Lexile? Lexiles can range from approximately 200 to 2000. A Lexile is the level of book that a student can read with 75% comprehension. Which book should my child read? Choose books with a Lexile from 100 below to 50 above their score. For example, if my student reads at 830L, he should pick a book with a Lexile range of 730L-880L. *Lexile is a registered trademark of Metametrics, Inc. Where can I find this score?
