Lexile & Reading Counts What is Lexile? Lexile Reader Measu re: represents a person’s reading ability on the Le xile scale, measured by tak ing the Scholastic Reading In ventory (SRI) in Shoreline . Lexile Text Measure: represents a text’s difficult y level on the Lexile scale. A Lexile text measure is based on two predictors of how difficult a text is to comprehend: word frequ ency and sentence length . Reading Counts is an independent reading incentive program. Students can read books that they find interesting (and are generally close to their Lexile level) and then take a test to measure their understanding. *Check with your child’s teacher for expectations for Reading Counts in his/her classroom. How to find books by Lexile Lexile levels on books do not take into account the content or intended audience. Lexile is one way to choose books. Students learn many ways to find “just right” books. We want students to read, learn, enjoy and understand the books they are reading. When searching for books within a Lexile range, there are many tools available. However, because Lexile only looks at word frequency and sentence length, readers and families need to be selective when choosing books. Te a ch e r s a n d t e a ch e rlibrarians show students several methods for choosing good books based on their interests and their abilities, both for their reading pleas ure and for schoolwork. Lexile measures help teachers and student find books that may be best for comprehending text. Students also will check out a variety of books for reading for enjoyment, based on their interests and not just on Lexile levels.
