Be A Designated Driver! BLACK HILLS PIONEER STATE NEWS Friday, August 7, 2009 Driver plows through Belle campground ■ Trailer, campers, damaged, destroyed, no injuries reported BY BRANDON BENNETT Black Hills Pioneer BELLE FO[RCHE , Several guests of the Riverside Campground are lucky to be alive after a man suffered a seizure while driving by the facility and cut a swath of destruction with his out-of-control car. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when an unidentified male was driving along Fifth Street and apparently suffered a medical condition. The car picked up speed and swerved into the campground according to witnesses. “He hit our sign out front and then hit an area where two tents had been,” said campground owner Dan Dittman. “One guy had just moved Page 5 AEROSMITH Continued from Page 1 his Harley and was walking back to his tent when the car roared through the spot.” The car continued on and struck a shelter, then glanced off a motor home, a fifth wheel camper, and then plowed into another camper broadside, destroying it. “The people who owned those campers were all working at the Buffalo Chip, so the weren't there when this happened,” said Dittman. “Even with the destruction of property, this turned out so much better than it could have, with no injuries or loss of life.” The Belle Fourche Police Department investigated the accident and the Butte County Ambulance was on scene as well. Belle Fourche Police Chief Tom Maunders declined to release the driver's name as the investigation is continuing. Charges may be pending, he said.0 Rally-related ER visits up RAPID CITY (AP) , The number of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally-related emergency room visits at hospitals around the Black Hills is almost twice what it was last year at this time. The numbers don't necessarily reflect an increase in motorcycle accidents. Hospital officials say the increase might be due to the aging of the biker population. Deb Colson with Rapid City-based Regional Health says hospital officials are seeing various kinds of injuries related to older people, and more heart attacks. Below is a listing of Rally related ER visits from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday Custer Regional Hospital 8 Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital 9 Rapid City Regional Hospital 28 Spearfish Regional Hospital 9 Sturgis Regional Hospital 43 The number of Rally-Related Inpatients at 7 a.m., Thursday are as follows: Custer Regional Hospital 1 Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital 2 Rapid City Regional Hospital 22 Spearfish Regional Hospital 4 Sturgis Regional Hospital 5 S"#$#% T()#*+ )#,- ./%0#* 12* A#*2.4/"5+ #%"#*",/%. Many in the crowd were surprised and thought it was part of the act, said Jessica Kokesh, a [niversity of South Dakota journalism student who covered the concert. aWe thought maybe he stage-dived into the crowd, but he didn't get back up,a Kokesh said. aI thought he was falling back to crowd surf.a Tyler landed on a couple of fans in the crowd of thousands, Sanborn said. Security rushed to help him and the crowd cheered when Tyler got up. He was taken backstage, where a physician attended to him. Around 12:15 a.m., Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry came out to tell the audience Tyler was being taken to the hospital and that the show would not go on. aIt was an unfortunate end to an extraordinary evening,a Sanborn said. Jeff Anderson, M.D. with Rapid City Regional Hospital, attended to Tyler when he was admitted. Anderson said Tyler was in good spirits when he arrived, with stable vitals. Anderson also reported that the response by the Buffalo Chip EMTs and the local Emergency Services was rapid and exemplary. Rod Woodruff, owner of the Buffalo Chip Campground, said he was thankful Tyler's injuries were not more serious. “Steven was giving an electrifying performance to a record crowd at the chip,” Woodruff said. Early reports by Rally officials were that the Buffalo Chip sold more than 100,000 tickets to Wednesday's performance. Tyler, known for heavy hits such as aWalk This Waya and aDream On,a attended Sturgis last year to promote his Dirico Motorcycles line and was back this year to do that again and play at Buffalo Chip. Tyler's motorcycle company had crafted this year's Official Sturgis Motorcycle bike, which was raffled off to raise money for Sturgis charities. The bike was to be given away during the concert, but Tyler never got the chance before his accident. Tyler was known for heavy drug and alcohol abuse in the 1970s and early 1980s. Every member of the blues-rock fivepiece went to rehab in the mid1980s, and the group staged an improbable comeback with the MTV generation. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Grammy-winning group is scheduled to play its next five shows in Canada. Wendy Pitlick contributed to this report. However, his plot on the famous Mount Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood is not his original resting place. Bs a beloved figure of Deadwood passed from life to death, many different people and actions and luck continued to play a hand in Wild Bill4s where9 abouts. Bfter Wild Bill was shot, Charlie Dtter, a friend of Hickok4s, claimed the body. Dtter took care of the arrange9 ments, and posted the follow9 ing obituary for Wild Bill Hickok in the Black Hills Eioneer: “Died in Kaija Deadwood, Black Hills, Bug. H, 187L, from the effects of a pistol shot, M.B. Hickok NWill BillO formerly of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Puneral services will be held at Charlie Dtter4s Camp, on Qhursday afternoon, Bug. 3, 187L, at 3 o4clock E.M. Bll are respectfully invited to attend.” With the talk of the shooting combined with the notice in the newspaper, almost everyone in Deadwood came to the funeral to pay their final respects. Dtter constructed a wooden marker to be placed at the head of Hickok4s grave, and he wrote on it: “Wild Bill, M.B. Hickok, killed by the assassin Mack McCall in Deadwood, Black Hills, Bugust Hnd 187L. Eard, we will meet again in the happy hunting ground to part no more. Good bye, Colorado Charlie, C.H. Dtter.” Qhis marker was located in the Ungleside Cemetery, which was the orig9 inal cemetery in Deadwood. However, with the growing population of the community, the dangers of pioneer life, and the regular forces of nature, the Ungleside Cemetery was soon out of plots. Ut also was located in a pris9 tine area coveted by new settlers, and the decision was made to move the cemetery. Qhat meant moving all the buried bodies. Qhe bodies were moved in the 188Vs up the hill to the Mount Moriah Cemetery. Wild Bill was also moved in this mass ceme9 tery transport. Wisitors to Swisher Mount Moriah cannot miss his current gravesite, as he is interred in a 1V9foot s7uare plot surrounded by a cast9iron fence, with a monument which has been built since his reburial. B D.S. flag flies nearby, and Will Bill is surrounded by other Deadwood notables, including Calamity Mane and Eotato Creek Mohnny. Ut was Martha Mane Canary4s dying wish to be buried next to Wild BillZ while there are rumors the two were at some point romantically involved, these rumors have never been verified except by Canary herself. However, the two now lie next to one another. Ut would be impossible to list every9 thing on a gravestone that Wild Bill did during his life. When one defender gives his partner a ruff, the rank of his card says which suit he would like returned. The goal is to get back on lead to deliver a second ruff. But sometimes the defender will not be sure which suit he wants his partner to lead. What does he do thenO Look at the North and East hands in the diagram. You, East, NEA Crossword Puzzle Funky Winkerbean by Tom Batiuk Astrograph Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 Take advantage of all opportunities in the year ahead to further your knowledge in your present field of endeavor. Regardless of the difficulty, it will be one of the smartest things you will ever do and youBll be rewarded. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) C Keep everything on a purely businesslike scale, especially commercial matters that involve friends. If a snarl develops, it will cause maFor trouble for you down the line. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) C Do not under any circumstances take it upon yourself to singularly make a decision involving a Foint endeavor without consulting your partner. Get your cohortBs endorsement first. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) C Unless you take the time to study matters so that good Fudgment can prevail at all times, you could get into something very demanding that would severely cramp your style. Look before you leap. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) C Be wary when spending time with a cliIue or small group that contains people whose ideas or interests severely oppose yours. If they make trouble, you could be the butt of their anger. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) C DonBt engage in anything that depends on Lady Luck to fulfill your ambitious eJpectations. If she isnBt around, the skids are likely to be greased and work against you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) C It isnBt likely that you will be too successful in passing off information as fact that cannot be verified or substantiated. What you say will be challenged in order to make you look bad. are defending against four spades. Partner leads the heart two. After winning with your ace, what heart would you play neJtO When you have decided, look at the other two hands and analy_e the auction, in which NorthBs response of two no-trump showed a balanced 1R-15 points with only two spades. First, the bidding. I am not fond of that two-no-trump response with three low clubs. I much prefer a bid of two diamonds. However, that would make it easier for East, who could now intervene with two no-trump, a variation on the Unusual No-Trump, to show his 55. (It isnBt logical to treat two notrump as natural after South opens the bidding and North promises at least 10 points.) Then West would bid five clubs over four spades, a contract that can be defeated only if NorthBs opening lead is a trump. What should you lead at trick twoO You have entries in both minors. But which is the one insured by LloydBs of LondonO Only diamonds, because South might be void in clubsd he surely cannot be void in diamonds. So lead back the heart nine. If partner trusts you, the play will go heart ace, heart ruff, diamond ruff, heart ruff, diamond ruff for down two. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) C Because it might be difficult to distinguish between a good and bad deal, your usual skillful dealings in commercial matters wonBt hold up. Leave them for another day. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) C If you take an unyielding position on a critical issue that is important to another, you will be met with far more severe opposition than usual. Make sure that you are up to handling a heated argument. ARIES (March 21-April 19) C It could be one of those days when everything you wanted to do could be usurped by the needs of others. PUBLIC NOTICES 56 NOTICE OF INTENT TO CONSTR+CT AN ANI-AL FEEDING OPERATION Notice is hereby given that the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources has received an application for an animal feeding operation from: Bart Krautschun Two Tone Cattle Company P.O. Box 157 Spearfish, SD 57783 The animal feeding operation is located in the Northeast 1/4 of Section 20, Township 7 North, Range 2 East in Lawrence County, approximately three miles north of Spearfish. A public notice was originally published in the Black Hills Pioneer on September 25, 2008, for a 4,000-head beef cattle operation at this location. Lawrence County denied the operation’s Uoning application for a 4,000head beef cattle operation. In response, the department asked the applicant what they intended to do with the state application. The applicant subsequently amended his application for a 999-head beef cattle operation. Therefore, since the amended application is substantially different from the original application noticed in 2008, the department is providing notice of the amended application. This notice is for an application for a 999-head beef cattle concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) at the same location. Pasture and wintering areas that do not meet the federal/state definition of a CAFO are not covered under this application or notice. The manure management system for the CAFO consists of a manure storage area, sedimentation basin, and holding pond that will have 365 days of storage capacity. The manure will be land applied to fields located in portions of the following sections in Lawrence and Butte County: Lawrence County: Sections 10 and 20 in Township 7 North, Range 2 East. Butte County: Sections 2 and 3 in Township 7 North, Range 2 East. Information about the manure management system or a copy of the application for the operation may be obtained from Ben Myers with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Joe Foss Building, Pierre, SD 57501-3181, phone (605) 773-3351. Meningococcal disease is an inflammation of the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord that is caused by infection with bacteria. Symptoms can include fever, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting and a rash. Prompt treatment is important to prevent disability and death. Ten to 14 percent of people with meningococcal disease die, and among survivors, up to 19 percent may suffer long-term permanent disabilities including hearing loss, limb amputation or brain disease. The disease strikes up to 2,800 Americans each year, killing 300. In 2008, South Dakota reported three cases of invasive meningococcal disease, two in infants. To date in 2009, there have been two cases reported, both infants. Students can contact the family health care provider or the student health center on their chosen college campus to receive the vaccine. The department provides the vaccine for those 11-18 years of age who are eligible for the federal Vaccines for Children Program (Medicaid eligible, Native American or Alaskan Native, uninsured or underinsured). There is no charge for the vaccine for these children but providers may charge a small administration fee. See http://doh.sd.gov/LocalOffices/Vaccine.aspx to find a provider and http://doh.sd.gov/DiseaseFacts/Meningitis.aspx to learn more about meningitis. Improving the state's childhood immunization rate is one obOective of the department's Health 2010 Initiative. Schooler served in the 25th Infantry Division and was stationed outside of Saigon during the war. Schooler said 1G members of his company were killed in action and are listed on the memorial. “He was a very good friend,” Schooler said standing with a list of his 1G fallen comrades in one hand and pointing to the name, James A. Mardis Jr. with the other. “A very, very good friend.” It is soldiers like “Cutter” and Schooler, who still feel the call of the duty in going back for their brethren by visiting the memorial and remembering their loved ones. In his book, The American Patriot, Scruggs writes, “The military has certain values which have remained constant, loyalty, duty, respect, service, honor, integrity and courage. Form Concord Bridge to Gettysburg to Iwo Jima to Oietnam to Afghanistan and Iraq, these values are the glue that holds our servicemen and women together as they have struggled through the arduous circumstances of war.” With the addition of one name in 2009 the total is now 58,261 names listed on the Memorial. Approximately 1,200 of these are listed as missing VMIA's, POW's, and othersY. The traveling memorial is open to the public at the Broken Spoke Campground east of Sturgis 24 hours a day through the Rally.
