VOL 2 PO Box 11328 Syracuse, NY 13218 (315) 308-1561 ISSUE 8 SEPT 2013 At the Table Whoever is kind to the needy honors God. Proverbs 14:31 (NCV). THE BIG NEWS! Over the past year we had felt in our hearts that this was the year for IMFK to find and obtain a place to call home. BUILDING HOPE AND CHANGING LIVES Another branch of the IMFK vision is to help the large refugee and immigrant community on Syracuse’s North side. We are excited to announce that IMFK has purchased property in Syracuse to launch into the next phase of our vision of bringing hope to those who feel invisible. This was a great step of faith! Two years ago as I sat waiting for a light to change I saw a man on the corner holding a cardboard sign. As I looked around I realized that no one would look at him. And then I heard these words in my heart, “He thinks he’s invisible. But I see him and I want you to feed him.” Now here we are two years later having met over 100 individuals and served over 1500 lunches to those who live under the bridges of the City of Syracuse. One such individual was our friend Randy. He was living outside and hopeless. Two times a week we brought him lunch which helped us build a relationship of trust with him. One day my daughter and I were walking around our neighborhood on the North Side. As we passed the Buddhist temple I was struck with how the world is coming to our own backyard. I quickly realized these families needed assistance. They needed clothing, food, furniture and someone to talk with to gain understanding of the new country they were now living in. IMFK began to do seasonal outreaches to meet these needs. Because of that relationship and the connections we made with other organizations, we were able to assist Randy in coming in off the streets and into an apartment. We had become the bridge out from under the bridge for Randy. If you are interested in their stories you can visit the IMFK website: inmyfatherskitchen.org The new IMFK facility will provide a comfortable neutral meeting space for our homeless friends and their family members; as well as case workers and their Over the past year we have ashomeless clients. All of us worksisted 10 people off the streets ing together to encourage our and into a brighter future. friends to make better choices. The new IMFK facility will offer a place for refugee families to network and make connections. IMFK will offer tutoring, a friend to help with government forms, clothing, food and understanding. Our goal being to help them regain their confidence so that they can be successful in the future that lies ahead for them. This facility is where IMFK will build hope in the hopeless and change the lives of those who have felt invisible. VOL 2 ISSUE 8 SEPT 2013 Let’s Take a Tour of IMFK’s new home A place where you can volunteer time, talents and service. On the first floor there will be a community center where the homeless and refugee case workers can meet with their clients in a café style setting. This would also be a place for us to do our seasonal giveaways, Bible studies, life skills training and special events that reach out to the North Side community. The IMFK business office will be located on the first floor to manage daily operations. This first floor will be a space where people can network with others from all different walks of life. IMFK Sous Chefs will be able to volunteer their time and talents to help change lives. The second floor has three bedrooms, bathroom, a kitchen and a living/dining room. Room #1 would be a clothing room providing free clothing for men. Room #2 can be used as a tutoring room for refugees in reading, math, writing, English, etc.. Room #3 will be the clothing room for women and children. The bathroom will be used for our homeless friends who need a little freshening up. The kitchen will be where Chef John prepares the lunches IMFK takes to our homeless friends living under the bridges of the City of Syracuse twice a week. The living/dining room will be a space IMFK volunteers can relax and brainstorm with new ideas. This would also offer a private place to speak one on one away from the crowd on the first floor. Things may change once we are in the building. VOL 2 ISSUE 8 SEPT 2013 A CALL TO ACTION. We need you! Thank you to all of our IMFK Sous Chefs for supporting the vision with your prayers, resources, time, and talents. The great testimony of your faithfulness is also seen in your giving hearts in the area of your finances. Without this we would have not be able to fulfill the vision of IMFK. We will be closing on the property early to mid- October. We will need the 20% down payment ($20,000) by September 30th. I know that seems like a large number but with God’s grace and your help we can reach this amount. To date we have already received $600 towards this goal. Provide a comfortable and safe meeting space for homeless friends. Reaching the Refugee Community with clothes, food, tutoring, training and love! How can I assist IMFK? Leigh-Ann and I are asking you if you will prayerfully consider giving your best financial gift towards making this closing cost a reality. Whether you’re led to give a gift of $100, $1,000 or $5,000 each amount brings us closer to our goal. No gift is too small. Together over the past two years we have done great things for our community. How much more can we accomplish with this awesome facility. We are your hands extended to the poor and needy. Michelle was one of our homeless friends who we ministered to for 18 months before she was tragically killed on Sept. 22, 2012. Together with Michelle’s family and friends under the bridge at North McBride and the 690 exit we will come together to remember Michelle. All are welcome to join us. IMFK will be serving boxed lunches to the homeless friends who attend the memorial service. Leigh-Ann Off the Menu What about the poor? In our cry of wanting to know God more we must look at those things that are closest to His heart. Over 400 verses speak about God’s passion for the needy and His desire that His followers share that passion. Defending the poor, caring for those in need-THIS is what God defines as knowing Him.
