Editorial.
Hi from your editor. OK, see you all at the Spring Festival, we need workers to sell
raffle tickets, members to talk to the public regarding their bird problems, don’t forget you were in that same
situation probably 10 yrs ago. We need sale [pretties] birds, not your OLD birds you can’t give away, mostly
Nesties. We all have a great weekend here, so let’s improve the weekend and make it better.
In the last Newsletter we stated that Trevor B. was the first to win a Fface/ Gface logie at the Nats, yes that’s
right, the first Wynnum Redlands Club Member to win that trophy. Marvellous how the grape vine works in the
Ipswich area, as I’ve always said, “if you have something to say to me then say it to me, don’t go behind my
back an gossip” I might lose respect for you as a man and a bird breeder.
Are you interested in breeding lesser varieties & need help sourcing stock, or need some technical advice on how to breed
your lesser varieties, then contact your club committee.

BITS AND PIECES.
Sept the 11th.Mr K Gough will do the slide presantion from the Nationals.
Oct the 9th
Mr Henry George will be discussing BASICS IN BUDGIES.
Nov the 13th Mr Glen Winch will be discussing YELLOW FACE and DOM. PIEDS.
These lectures will be very informative to all members, and i expect to see a really big roll up for the next
couple of months, and also the weather will be more comfortable, so no excusses.
To all club members Mal Reid has Budgie and other types of seed in quantity;
Sourced from Riverina
Seeds. Mix is 1/3, 1/3, 1/3.This seed will be available to all members at $22 – 00 per bag. You must ring Bill
S. and arrange where to collect your order and pay for it. Available monthly.
Sexing budgies.
Sexing mature budgies is easy. The cock's cere (the waxy skin around their nostrils) is blue in
colour. But if the cock is an albino, Lutino, recessive pied or a fallow then the cock will never get
a blue cere, the cere is then fleshy pinkish in colour. I didn't know this before and thought that
my first recessive pied cock was a hen because he didn't have a blue cere, and never got one
either. The cere of an adult hen is whitish, tan or brown in colour.
Sexing young budgies isn't that easy in the beginning. However if you breed with sex linked
varieties then you can sex the young already in the nest. This is the case if you're breeding a
cock of a sex linked variety with a normal hen.
Dominant varieties.
The dominant varieties are: dominant pieds, spangles, greys, violets, and yellow faces.
Are there any more dom. varieties that i have forgotten???
Dominant varieties can never be carried invisible, if a bird carries a dominant variety it is always visible. A
double factor bird has got the same dominant variety from both of the parents, while a single factor bird got one
dominant variety from either the cock or the hen. In the below table you can see what to expect when breeding
with dominant varieties.

Spangle. One type of Dominant Varity.
Spangle causes the markings on the wings and tail to be reversed. On the wings, instead of the normal black
feathers with white edges creating the normal striping pattern, the feathers are mostly clear (yellow or white)
with a thin black stripe at the edge. Sometimes the spangle mutation causes a little bit of the body colour to
show up between the stripes on the back of the head.
Unlike the Opaline, spangle does not cause the body colours to spread throughout the feathers of the neck and
wings. However a budgie can be both spangle and Opaline, causing a unique pattern of colour dissipating
through the wings.
Genetically double-factor spangles are all yellow or all white (depending on base colour).
Genetics of Spangle
There are only two alleles for spangle: the spangle gene and the normal gene. The spangle gene is semidominant to the recessive normal gene. This means that a single-factor spangle looks different from the doublefactor spangle. Here, we will represent the spangle gene as "S" and the normal gene as "s". Therefore there are
three possible genetic combinations for any budgie:



ss - Two normal genes (homozygous) resulting in a normal budgie.
Ss - One spangle gene and one normal gene (heterozygous) resulting in a spangled budgie.
SS - Two spangle genes (homozygous) resulting in a double-factor spangle budgie, which has no
markings or colour.
As you can see, it is only when one spangle gene and one normal gene is present that a budgie is the actual
spangle variety. When two spangle genes are present the budgie has no markings or colour, and looks like a
Lutino/albino except for the red eyes.
Below are some punnet square examples of pairings.

After being married for thirty years, a wife asked her husband to describe her.
He looked at her for a while, and then said, "You're an alphabet wife ..... A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K."
She asks ... "What the hell does that mean?"
He said, "Adorable, Beautiful, Cute, Delightful, Elegant, Fabulous, Gorgeous, and Hot".
She smiled happily and said ... "Oh, that's so lovely, but what about I, J, K?"
He said, "I'm Just Kidding!"
The swelling in his eye is going down and the doctor is fairly optimistic about saving his testicles.

Breeding Condition
.
Author: Lindsey, Cute Little Birdies Aviary.
Breeding condition is a change in a bird’s body to prepare for reproducing.
When your budgies they are in breeding condition they are primed and ready to raise their chicks, they are at
peak fertility, and have the optimal hormone levels to carry out raising a family from start to finish.
These hormone levels are ideal for egg development and fertilization, as well as parenting drives for raising the
resulting chicks to be healthy confidant adults.
This thread will help you to know why breeding condition is important, how you can tell when your pair is out,
coming in, and in condition, and how you can encourage them to come into condition
Why Condition Before Breeding?
In the wild budgies naturally come into breeding condition at optimal times during the year when there are the
best condition. At these times there are increased light hours for finding food and water, a greater supply of
fresh food, and they have just finished with their seasonal moults.
You can attempt to breed your pair outside of this ideal time, but the results will always be better if you work
with their natural body cycles and you will have less of the common breeding problems that often come up.
Common problems that result from a pair not being in condition
:Lack of breeding motivation in your pair
Irregular laying cycles
Infertile eggs
Abandoned eggs
Poorly fed chicks
Abandoned chicks
It is simply because hormones play a role in successful breeding drive for all of the things mentioned above
that there are higher chances of them with an out of condition pair. The change of your pairs cere and
behaviour is an outward sign of the inward change in them. If you want them to breed as successfully as
possible, you need to work with their natural cycles during the time they are in condition.
Are They In Condition?
As was mentioned, the cere and behaviour are the best indicators.
Here are some things to look for in both your male and females.
Males
When your male is not in breeding condition he will have a lighter blue uneven even colour to their cere.
Males have the deep blue, shiny and even tone to their ceres of males that are in peak condition.
Behaviours to look for in malesThey will become much more vocal.
They will flirt and sing to anyone or anything that will listen, trying their best to impress their potential mates
and ward off other males.
Their cere will change from a light uneven colour of blue, to a deep even bright blue in colour.
Females
A female not in condition will have a white/blue colour to her cere like in the picture 1.
This is the least fertile time to try and breed your female for a hormonally healthy hen.
When a female starts to come into condition, pic. 2 the white/brown colour begins to turn into a light tan cream
colour. This is when it is best to set your pair up in their breeding cage.
Here are females in breeding condition Pic. 3 This is when you want to introduce the nest box and encourage
egg laying. By this time the pair should be bonded and mating.
Behaviours to look for in FemalesThey will get more aggressive in general and especially toward other females.
They will start chewing just about everything in sight like perches, toys cuttlebones and mineral blocks etc.
They will flirt with males, become more vocal, and start searching out potential nesting spots.
Her cere will change from blue/white to a deep tan.
How Can You Encourage Breeding Condition?
Diet In the wild the weather and food supplies it brings has a huge effect on breeding. When there is the
greatest amount of food is when budgies begin to breed. High protein and fat foods will encourage breeding
condition. You will also want to increase their calcium intake with cuttle fish, mineral blocks and liquid
calcium. Calcium Sandose.
Some examples of high protein foods I like to feed: Hard boiled eggs, Legumes, Wheat germ
Daylight Hours Increase their daylight hours from 8-10 to 12-14.
The more sunlight they can get the better for them, since a hen produces vitamin D from natural sunlight which
is needed to absorb calcium and prevent egg binding.
If your pair does not get at least 30 minutes of direct sunlight, consider a supplement that will help compensate
such as Soluvite D or Soluvite D Breeder.
Other Budgies Budgies are flock animals. In the wild they breed within hearing distance of other budgies. Not
only is it a protection with more budgies to keep a look out for predators, but it also provides competition
which spurs on the pair. Silence for a budgie means danger, so making them feel secure with lots of back
ground noise will increase their motivation to breeding.
Lastly A Nest box
Once you are seeing signs that your pair is in breeding condition, they are ready for you to introduce a nest box.
Adding some shavings for the female to kick out and arrange in the box will trigger her nesting instincts. I like
to add some spray millet in the box too so the hen has something to eat curing the long hours she spends in the
box incubating and feeding the chicks. If your pair is fully conditioned and bonded, you can expect eggs
(fertile ) to be laid 7-14 days later.
A MOUSE TRAP PLACED ON TOP OF YOUR ALARM CLOCK WILL PREVENT YOU
FROM ROLLING OVER AND GOING BACK TO SLEEP AFTER YOU HIT THE
SNOOZE BUTTON.
Due to a water shortage in Ireland , Dublin swimming baths have announced they are closing
lanes 7 and 8....

* Green Series includes Light, Dark, Olive and Grey Green.
* Blue Series includes Skyblue, Cobalt, Mauve, Violet and Grey.
* All classes are in accordance with the ANBC Standard and Matrix - Amendment 1 of 2012
* Multiple factor birds exist in many combinations. Therefore , if the schedule does not list a certain
colour/variety combination then these birds will go into the AOV and Non Standardised classes.
33
Refer ANBC Standard colour matrix for combinations.
* Any bird carrying multiple factors will only be eligible for awards which can be directly taken by the particular
class in which they are entered.
* If you have a bird carrying multiple variety factors, please refer to the colour matrix from the ANBC Standard
to see what class you can enter your bird in. For example, if you have a bird that is visually a Dominant Pied,
Opaline, Cinnamon, Yellowface and Grey you would check to see the highest section number in the matrix and if
all the other factors are included, then that is the class to enter the bird in. In the instance of the bird described,
Dominant Pied (sect 16) is the highest, included is Opaline (sect 11), cinnamon (sect 9) Yellowface (sect 3) and
grey (sect 2), so therefore in this instance you would enter this particular bird as a Dominant Pied either class 33
or 34 dependant whether a cock or hen.
* Variable class to be nominated on the Show Schedule by each club as required.
