In 2014 there were 6,097 confirmed victims* of child abuse and neglect in
Tarrant County. Based on our child population, that means
1 in 86
Tarrant County children were abused last year.
These are the children we know about.
Research shows that only
1 in 10
children ever tell.
So, we have to ask...

Family & Protective Services
Children who have been abused and find the incredible courage to speak
up and tell their story deserve our immediate attention and protection.
Finding the courage to tell an adult can be very difficult. Children who
have been abused often feel ashamed and responsible for what has
happened to them. Sometimes the children care about the person who
has abused them and must find strength to make an outcry. Children are
often fearful about telling anyone, sometimes because the person abusing
them has threatened to hurt them if they do. For children to find the
courage to tell, they need an adult who can show them they are believed
and that this was not their fault. As adults, we have a responsibility to
protect those who cannot protect themselves. Sadly, a large percentage
of children who have been abused do not tell anyone about it and many
keep that secret their entire life. One of the most important things we as
adults can do to stop childhood abuse is to begin a dialogue with children
about appropriate physical contact and how to make an outcry to an
adult. Programs like P.S It's My Body, along with individual discussions, can
make a huge impact for a child. As adults we have a responsibility to
make sure that when a child has the courage and strength to ask for help,
his or her voice is heard, and action to protect that child is taken. If you or
someone you know needs support in helping a child or an adult find the
courage to tell, it is so important to rely on the resources of Child Protective
Services, your local police or children’s advocacy centers such as Alliance
For Children.
Last year, our community saw more than 6,000 children confirmed victims
of abuse. Yet, research suggests that only 1 in 10 children will ever tell
about their abuse. Where are the other 9 children? How can we reach
them? How can we stop the abuse from occurring? Would you have the
courage to tell?
As we look back on our work this last fiscal year, we are reminded of
children who are resilient, fighters, survivors. We are honored to be a part
of their journey to healing. Yet, we know our work is not possible without
the support of so many. Thank you for having the courage to tell and the
courage to support this work.
Thank you for being an advocate for those who display the courage to
tell.

he first time (he) did anything
to me I was in shock. I thought
maybe I had a bad dream. It was
my mom’s boyfriend and he was
always so nice to me and he had
never done anything that made
me uncomfortable before that
night.
The second time it
happened I knew it wasn’t a
dream and I also thought I could
never tell my mom. She loved him
and there is no way she would
believe me. So, I
told

friend and she
told her mom.
Her mom made a

I
met who I thought was a really
cool guy on the internet. I knew
better – I had heard all the stories
and warnings about not meeting
someone on the internet. But he was
different – he knew some of the
same people I did. We had the
same hobbies, loved the same
movies and his parents were going
through a divorce too. We met once
at a park and he assaulted me. And
he wasn’t my age, he was in his
thirties. I was afraid to tell because I
should have known better. After
talking to a friend of mine about
what happened, she told me I had
to tell my parents because what if he
did this to someone else? I told my
mom and she called the police.

T
wins Michael and Makayla were
inseparable from birth. They also
both started being sexually abused
by their biological parents around
the age of 5. Both too ashamed to
tell the other what was going on,
they became withdrawn from one
another and grew apart. One day
Michael discovered that what was
happening to him was also
happening to Makayla. Though he
had kept his own horrible secret for
years, he felt empowered to help his
sister. He went to school the next
day and told his teacher. She made
a report.
Today Michael and
Makayla are living with their
grandparents and are close like they
were before the abuse started.
Michael has never told Makayla that
he is the one who told, but he’s glad
he did.

Alliance For Children would like to also
thank all of our in-kind donors.
Alliance For Children asked some of
the children who are being served
through our group and individual
counseling - ”what does having the
courage to tell mean to you?” Here
is what they said:
“It means that I am brave!”
Jacob, 8 years old
“If someone is doing something that
makes you feel bad, you have to tell.
It’s the right thing to do even when
you are scared.” Missy, 11 years old
“Sometimes it means hurting
someone you love and that can
make you really sad at first. It can
make everyone sad. But in the end,
having courage means doing the
right thing not what is always easy.”
Cristina, 14 years old
“It means I’m strong like Thor!”
Michael, 4 years old
If these children have the courage to
tell, so can you. If you suspect that
someone is being abused you must
report. You can report by calling
1-800-252-5400.
