Spotswood Mission Statement
The Spotswood High School community will provide a safe, orderly environment and diverse learning experiences for students to
acquire the knowledge, skills, and character needed for academic success and responsible, productive citizenship in the 21st century.
History of the School
Spotswood Sr. High School opened in the fall of 1980 for grades 10-12 and was named for Governor Alexander Spotswood who
blazed a trail west of the Blue Ridge along with his Knights of the Golden Horseshoe. The school colors are royal blue and grey and
the Trailblazer is our mascot. In the fall of 1984 the building welcomed 9th grade students and the name was changed to Spotswood
High School. Due to increased growth and enrollment in the school's attendance area, an addition of 28 classrooms, a gymnasium
and a variety of facility improvements were completed in the fall of 1997. With continued growth in eastern Rockingham County,
Spotswood was again becoming overcrowded housing 1365 students in a building with a capacity of 1200. Thus, the School Board
approved the construction of a fourth high school in the county. In August of 2010, redistrictinq brought students to Spotswood from
Broadway High School and Turner Ashby High School and 621 Spotswood students were redistricted to attend the newly opened East
Rockingham High School in Elkton, VA, leaving SHS with 847 students and room to learn and grow.
