Inver Grove Heights Community Schools Gifted Services Providing a challenging education through which all students achieve success in a diverse society Elementary School Opportunities for Able Learners Cluster Classrooms at All Elementary Schools • Classroom resources support the addition of more rigorous learning opportunities for able learners. • Advanced books and discussion guides are used for literary discussion groups. • Student in grades three through five participate in WordMasters, a competition that focuses on vocabulary and engages verbal reasoning through the study of analogies. • Brainboosters Math Enrichments, Jr. Great Books, Pancakes and Poetry and Destination ImagiNation will also be available to able learners. Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program at Salem Hills Elementary School • Atheneum Gifted Magnet Program was named a National Blue Ribbon High Performing School in 2011. • The program is celebrating 10 years of serving highly gifted students in second- through fifth-grade. • Students who are found to be in the superior range of cognitive ability pursuant to the district’s eligibility criteria are invited to participate in Atheneum. • The program’s mission is to provide a self-contained classroom option for these students to enhance the daily academic rigor that will motivate and challenge this group of learners. Offerings include honors math, language arts, reading social studies and science, and advanced social studies and science courses. • Ongoing training and support on curriculum differentiation is given to all teachers who are involved with able learner program students. Honors Programming • Honors classes focus on developing advanced skills within the content area. • Homework assignments, tests and essays require more advanced skills and content mastery. • Honors classes move at faster pace, which requires students to have strong independent study skills and the ability to work both individually at home and in groups at school. High School Opportunities for Able Learners Simley High School • Simley High School offers a wide range of academic courses including Advanced Placement classes in mathematics, science, English, social studies, world languages and art. • Staff strive to provide ample opportunities for students to receive the additional support they need to be successful at Simley High School and prepare them for life after graduation. Advanced Placement Honors Programming AP courses allow students to go further with their high school education. In addition, students who take AP exams may earn college credit or advanced placement at many colleges and universities. Simley High School offers AP courses in the following areas: American Government European History Biology German Calculus Psychology Chemistry Spanish Economics Statistics English Language and Composition Studio Art English Literature and Composition U.S. History • Simley High School currently offers multiple opportunities for students who seek a rigorous and challenging curriculum. • Honors classes are offered in algebra, biology, chemistry, English, physics, economics, physical science, geometry and trigonometry.
