FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Jesus began speaking in the synagogue:
‘Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your
hearing.’ All who were present spoke favorably
of him; they marveled at the appealing discourse
which came from his lips. They also asked, ‘Is
this not Joseph’s son?’…At these words the
whole audience in the synagogue was filled with
indignation. They rose up and expelled him from
the town…”
It didn’t take many verses in the gospel of St. Luke
to find a conversion, not to but away from Jesus.
The person, admired and respected, became the
challenger. He knew their hearts and was found to
be too much for them. He told it like it was.
We are called to turn constantly to the Lord. We
hear His word proclaimed and a teaching on a
weekly basis. God’s word is ‘like a two edged sword’
which can cut deeply, inform and reform our lives.
Sometimes we do not care for what we hear, because it challenges our way of life, our pattern of
thinking, or our relationship with others. But remember, what is important is our relationship with God.
As I recreate the scene in the Nazareth synagogue,
I ask myself if I marvel at what I hear and how I respond.

on the environment and global justice. In connection with
a Lenten theme of earthkeeping, we will read this encyclical together as a small group at St. Luke. Lutherans and
Roman Catholics have been invited to join in the discussion. The document is free to download at https://
laudatosi.com/watch or able to be purchased at Otto’s
bookstore. The small group will take place on Tuesdays in
Lent @ 3:30pm at St. Luke, 1400 Market St., Williamsport.

Catch Our Spirit…
Celebrate Catholic Schools Week
January 31 – February 6, 2016
Celebrate Catholic Schools Week by attending one of
our Catholic School Open Houses! You are invited to
come experience our communities of faith and academic excellence. From Pre-Kindergarten through 12th
grade, our students live their faith, challenge their
minds, serve their communities, and build lifelong
friendships. For specifics about the Open Houses or
for more info. about our Diocesan Catholic Schools,
including tuition assistance opportunities, please visit
www.DioceseofScranton.org/CatholicSchools.
YEAR OF MERCY
How can we show others the
mercy of God? We say that
God is compassionate, but we
ignore the poor. We say that
God loves us and has mercy on
us, but we hold grudges against
our friends. Our actions need to
authentically reflect God's mercy.
Moments of Mercy
Each month our Moments of
Mercy will offer brief reflections
on mercy and concrete suggestions of how we can live
out the mercy that God offers us all. These are perfect
for busy days since they help us to slow down for just a
few minutes and think about the gifts God has blessed
us with and how we can share them.
ST. JOHN NEUMANN OPEN HOUSES St. John
Neumann Regional Academy will hold Open Houses at
our Elementary Campus (710 Franklin St.) and our Junior/Senior High School Campus (901 Penn St.) on Sunday, January 31 from Noon-2 pm. We will have registration packets, including financial aid applications, for
the 2016-17 school year. If you are unable to attend our
Open Houses, or if you would like more information,
please contact Kathy Bahr at 570-323-9953, ext. 205 or
[email protected].
When we think about pilgrimages, we probably think
about medieval people walking great distances to aweinspiring churches. Yet, Pope Francis describes what is
at the heart of pilgrimage and encourages us to each
make one during this Jubilee of Mercy. He writes that
"life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a viator, a pilgrim traveling along the road, making his way to
the desired destination" (MV, no. 14). Pope Francis encourages each of us to make a pilgrimage to the Holy
Door in our diocese some time during this Jubilee of
Mercy. Being committed to the journey of pilgrimage

LENT POTLUCK SERIES—WALKING WITH
CHRIST TO CALVARY—Join us on Fridays in
Lent beginning on February 12th from 5:30-6:45 in
the Church Hall for a meatless potluck dinner
(please bring your favorite dish to share) and meditations on the Stations of the Cross presented by
Donna Miller. We will learn more about each station and how we can carry our own crosses in union
with our Lord as we prepare to remember his passion, death, and resurrection at Easter.
PRAYER CANDLES—Did you know that the small
candles in the stands by Mary and Joseph are 50¢each
and the 7 day candles at the St. Ann statue are $5 each?
Please place your donation in the box under the candle
stands or on the plate to the left of
the 7 day candles. By donating for
the candles you help to keep this
Catholic tradition of prayer selfsupporting.
