• Sustainable Development Scheme:
« Act local, Think global*»
Corporate social responsibility (or RSE in French) allows companies
to incorporate the principles of sustainable development into their
activities. SCV Domaine Skiable has implemented a policy that
integrates the social, environmental and economic interests of the
company into its business strategy. The latter is based on the expectations and interests of its stakeholders (clients, socio-professionals,
local authorities, associations, government agencies, etc) and the
business development of SCV Domaine Skiable.
One of the first initiatives included in this policy is the establishment
of an ‘environmental observatory’. This stems from the company’s
desire to respect and protect the local biodiversity and to manage
environmental issues within four main themes (landscapes and
habitats, flora, fauna, and water).
With this in mind, SCV Domaine Skiable aims to collaborate in complete transparency with all local stakeholders: municipal authorities,
farmers, forestry management, hunters, consultancy firms, local
businesses and associations, etc. This dialogue will allow greater
understanding of each stakeholder’s constraints/difficulties, to share
expertise and to implement specific measures tailored to each partner
while respecting the local biodiversity.
A statement will be drawn up to raise awareness among customers
about the protection of the environment (waste management, staying
on marked paths, etc) and to promote the area’s natural and cultural
heritage (using botanically-themed paths, events, etc).
Serre Chevalier affirms its commitment to improved environmental
protection. Various partners in the tourism sector have introduced
a number of measures to improve awareness-raising programmes,
as well as waste and energy management systems. SCV Domaine
Skiable, part of the Compagnie des Alpes, has had QSE certification
since this winter, as well as ISO 9001, ISO 14000, and OHSAS certifications.
In recognition of its commitment to sustainable development, the
Compagnie des Alpes has also had AlpEnergie 100 certification since
summer 2012 and used since last year a Pisten Bully Hybrid 600 +

To the pistes! Cultural events
to explore with your skis on…
« Neiges de culture© »
is a new concept that combines
the fun of skiing with culture.
With friends or family or on your
own, and with your skis on, explore the history of the valley and
the mountains through a number
of fun and unusual trails. Photographic exhibitions, soundscapes, a nomad village and historical adventures are among the
installations to be found around
the resort, on immaculate snow
slopes, chairlifts, nestling in valleys and mountaintops, and even
on your MP3 player. Designed
and built by Isabelle de Beaufort, who specialises in extremely popular and unusual trails
and mazes, the fourth season
of ‘Neiges de Culture©’ takes
place in Serre Chevalier from 20
December 2014 to 19 April 2015.
Committed to innovation, SCV
has given Isabelle carte blanche
to create these installations.
These free trails are open to all.
Also ‘Carte Blanche’ Devised by
chef William Ledeuil and boss of
Michelin-starred Paris restaurant
ZeKitchen Galerie, Carte Blanche
is the gastronomic component of
Neiges de Culture©. The concept:
ask the restaurateurs of Serre
Chevalier to create ‘white menus’, which refer in colour, texture, and spices, as well as their
names and stories, their blends
of dishes and wines to white, the
snow and cold, and cultural trails.
The local chefs have been taking
part for the last three years and
have added white and a dash of
culture to their menus.
The photographer Franck Gérard,
with his photographic exhibition
at Serre Ratier station and in
the valley’s schools, has place
of honour within this year’s
cultural programme. Gérard was
photographer in residence in
Serre Chevalier last season and
created a photographic portrait of
the valley’s children as a counterpoint to his ‘Les enfants du froid’
(children of the cold) exhibition.

Serre Chevalier Vallée
promotes
its
heritage
A paper version of the ‘Laissez-vous conter
Briançon’ (Briançon tells its tale) is available from
the Serre Chevalier Vallée tourist offices.
Briançon, Ville d’art et d’histoire
From ancient remains to 20th century architecture,
the Villes et Pays d’art et d’histoire (towns and
areas of art and history) showcase France’s diverse
heritage. Today it is a network of 163 areas and the
Villes et Pays offer you the best of its expertise
across France.
Briançon’s heritage department coordinates the
town’s cultural projects and, together with guidelecturers accredited by France’s Ministère de la
Culture, has developed a programme of exploratory
tours for individuals, groups and younger visitors.
In the holiday period, it offers events and activities
to suit the needs of all our visitors, including walks
with shows, treasure hunts, days exploring the
forts and workshops for children.

Vauban’s Briançon forts – World Heritage
Briançon is a member of the Réseau des sites
majeurs de Vauban, which brings together the
12 Vauban sites inscribed onto the UNESCO
World Heritage List
The association coordinates the work of conserving,
managing and developing these sites with their
outstanding architectural, urban and landscape
heritage. It also serves to initiate and develop
research and cultural exchanges on the international stage. Seven sites in Briançon were privileged
enough to receive recognition for their authenticity - their state of conservation, representative
role and the development programmes in place to
manage them: the Pont d’Asfeld (bridge), Fort des
Trois Têtes (guided tours), Fort Dauphin, Fort du
Randouillet, Communication Y, the city walls and
developments made inside them (guided tours),
and Fort des Salettes (guided tours).
History of the town…
Occupying a key position for
Alpine commerce, the town
has seen economic, political
and strategic development
on both a national and international scale. Crossroads of
commerce and ideas. The birth
of the town can be dated to the
first quarter of the 13th century
and references to the ‘bourg’.
The Dauphin sought to stimulate
trade in the town by granting
his subjects certain political and
economic concessions. These
privileges gave Briançon commerce an international dimension, while the establishment
of the Papacy in Avignon at the
beginning of the 14th century saw
increased commercial traffic via
the Durance valley. Merchants
came from across France, the
Comtat Venaissin (the region
around Avignon), Italy, Flanders,
Germany and Spain, and the
Great Briançon Fair was held in
September and could last up to
15 days.
A strong religious presence
The rise of the Waldensians in
the Middle Ages prompted the
Catholic Church to wage a campaign of evangelism and repression. This led to the construction
of numerous religious buildings.
A Franciscan monastery was
built at the end of the 14th century. Monks played an active role
in the town, building the Chapelle
des Pénitents Noirs in the 16th
century. The town’s medieval
church with its elegant tapering
spire was razed to the ground
in the 18th century to make way
for the ramparts and a collegiate
church was built within the town
walls. A new monastery for the
Récollets (Franciscan) monks,
army chaplains, was built in the
18th century and Ursuline nuns
took charge of the education of
girls.
Military life
Located at the foot of the Col du
Montgenèvre, Briançon has been
a defended settlement since the
Gallo-Roman period. The kings of
France stayed here several times
during the wars with Italy and
the arrival of troops in the town
often left its inhabitants financially ruined. Its military presence
swelled with the construction of
defensive walls in the 18th century and there could be as many
as 6000 men garrisoned here in
times of conflict. The creation of
a ‘snow regiment’ at the end of
the 19th century had a great effect on Briançon life and in 1994
the 159e Régiment d’Infanterie
Alpine was replaced by the
Centre National d’Aguerrissement en Montagne. The army
finally left Briançon in December
2009.
Original ideas for exploring
the local heritage
The Industrial Revolution
The establishment of a factory
in the lower town gave a huge
boost to the economy of the
Briançon region. The Schappe
factory processed waste silk and
brought the Industrial Revolution
to Briançon. It precipitated a
period of great social and
economic change and urbanisation to the town. With this came
the birth of the Quartier Sainte
Catherine as a new middle class
centre of industry and commerce. The factory provided employment for over 800 workers
for almost a century. The aftermath of the First World War and
the arrival of synthetic silk meant
the factory was forced to close
its doors for the last time in 1933.
The birth of tourism and the
development of mountain cures
The new activity known as tourism spread through the Briançon region in the second half of
the 19th century. Thanks to the
growing popularity of winter and
summer sports and the staging
of the world’s first international
ski competition in Montgenèvre
in 1907, the reputation of the
greater Briançon area was
attracting increasing numbers of
visitors. As well as tourism,
mountain cures were another
source of income and Briançon’s
dry, healthy climate and sunshine
meant that in July 1914 it
established itself as a ‘health
resort’. Yet it was not until the
1930s and the construction
of the sanatoriums that a true
health-promotion policy was put
in place.
Gourmands d’Histoire(s)
The fresh air and sun makes you
hungry? Take the family to the
Cité Vauban with a guide-lecturer
and master baker Polycarpe
Bouchu to learn about local
specialities and to sample mountain hospitality. The exploration
starts at the old place du marché
(market square) whose inns were
centres of activity for the Cité
Vauban, and learn about baking
bread in the old oven and the
local architecture at the model of
the old town.
In the warmth of the CRET
kitchens, let Laurent Berruyer
(member of Slow Food Coolporteur) share his secrets and
expertise in mountain flavours
and traditional know-how.
Everyone can try their hand at
preparing delicious Briançon
recipes to take away. While
the adults are preparing a dish
using local organic produce, the
children improvise desserts
with the help of Polycarpe. Tour

Gentle snowshoe hikes
around the Vauban
fortifications
Each winter guide-lecturers from
Briançon’s heritage department
and mountain leaders from Montagne Visa Trekking offer some
original outings. Combining sport,
natural heritage and the military
heritage of the forts, these walks
are open to everyone. Two circuits available:
- Fort des Têtes from the
Fontchristianne valley
-F
ort des Salettes from the
Champ de Mars.
The trip starts with a few moments to familiarise yourself with
the equipment after which your
mountain leaders teach you the
basics of walking with snowshoes, which is easy to master
and fun.
Snowshoeing will appeal to
nature lovers who, even in the
depths of winter, can explore the
mountain flora and fauna. With a
bit of luck you might see some of
the local wildlife and be able to
follow them thanks to the numerous tracks they leave in the blanket of snow.
The guide-lecturers will explain
the history of the area to you,
where Vauban left his mark and
whose forts are now designated ‘World Heritage Sites’. The
powerful and elegant architecture is certainly impressive and
is heightened by the sumptuous
snowy surroundings. The magic
of these sites really strikes you
as you enter the forts frozen in
their winter slumber. You are
then transported back to the 17th
century and can imagine what it
was like to be one of Louis XV’s
soldiers.

It produces the ‘Serre Che pour

line and in Tourist Offices. The
guide lists all the valley’s disabled
facilities and activities to help to
make disabled people’s stays easier. Several initiatives have been
launched in the valley. One of
these is the Chalet Handy, which
opened in 2012 and is the first
chalet in France specifically devoted to the well-being of disabled
men and women wishing to take
part in mountain sports.

Thanks to its central reservation
service, the Serre Chevalier Tourist Office has been promoting
Briançon accommodation providers since 2010. Buoyed by
the experience, the four local
authorities in Serre Chevalier and
Briançon have decided to create
a single body charged with managing tourist promotion and marketing ventures.
The Serre Chevalier Vallée Tourist Office will take the reins of
this new body, which is gradually
coming into being and involves
50 partners and a budget of
7 million Euros.
The aim is to create, by 2015,
