ACCS News letter March 2016 - Alliston Community Christian
ACCS NEWSLETTER March 2016 An interesting spring season, to say the least What will be next? Many of you, just like I, are probably wondering about the type of weather we have been experiencing this spring. Some will immediately suggest it is happening as a result of global warming and to expect more of it. That may be one reason for the weather, but, let's leave that for a different conversation. What I'd like to suggest is that the weather, especially when it is out of the ordinary, always gives us a friendly reminder to take things one step at a time. The ice storm created a lot of havoc. As most of us have seen, it has also impacted a lot of trees. Broken branches are everywhere. Some trees will have to be torn down, some just trimmed. For most though the trunk of the tree, the roots, are all in place. Rejuvenation will be seen as spring and warmer weather arrive. Most of the trees will survive and do well. For us as an ACCS community, we've experienced a bit of that “ice storm”. When some board members resigned this past month it created a few difficult days. We've experienced a bit of “brokenness”, some “pain”, and yes, a need to reflect and renew. What we are also going to experience is that it is our rootedness, what we hold on to, that will allow us to move forward, that will allow us to survive and thrive. ACCS is looking at celebrating 35 years of offering Christian Education in the Alliston area this year. Much to be thankful for. As we move forward, as we “rejuvenate”, I want to remind ourselves of God's faithfulness. Something that has such strong purpose as educating God's children will be able to continue only if we look to Him. As we plan for next year, as teachers modify, renew or develop new curriculum, as the board makes changes at the same time hangs onto that what has always been essential, as we tell others about ACCS, be sure to keep in mind what is at the “root” of it all. God through His Son gave us an opportunity for redemption. We celebrated that just a couple of weeks ago during Easter week. ACCS is one way in which we give back to our Father by teaching His children what it means to serve Him. Together, through each day’s activities, we acknowledge Him as Lord of all. May we always place our trust in Him, and may we do so in such a way that Alliston and all those in the surrounding area hear about that too. Mr. Bronsema Principal In This Issue Gr 1/2 Lap Books Gr 7/8 Kindergarten Open House Speech Fest / Skate-a-thon Christian Education Week Board Report Sugar Bush & Bible Thank you to Mr. Mark Peterson and his son Andrew for helping us make the “sugar bush” come alive. Grade 1 / 2 - Lap Books During the month of March, students in the Primary Classroom finished studying the life of Moses. We learned how God led His people through the desert into the Promised Land. We also learned about the Tabernacle, God told the people to build. As a special activity, we built a Tabernacle with Miss Hayes and made a Lap Book, describing each part of the Tabernacle. During Science class we learned about Simple Machines and how they help us do our work. We created another Lap Book, describing each Simple Machine and how they work. Our garden is beginning to show signs of life. We are eagerly waiting to see the flowers appear. Grade 7/8 Sugar Bush & Bible The grade 7/8 students ventured into the bush- the sugar bush to be exact - our sugar bush! We braved the very wet and muddy bog, traversed the bullrushes, and hiked to the wood stove that housed the huge pot of boiling sap, soon to be delicious pure maple syrup. Students were given a lesson on 'syrupology' ( yes- I made that up- it's in the RDictionary) Mr. Mark Peterson and his son Andrew, treated us to a morning of all things maple syrup, and wood chopping of the 'post ice storm' felled trees. The students were amazed at the challenge in safely and efficiently chopping logs for the fire. Thank you Mr. Peterson x 2. Our new Bible unit- World Religions is underway- come on in during Christian Education week and view our 'World Religion Exhibit'- contact the school for details. It will fascinate you! Dear ACCS families, On behalf of the board and staff of ACCS, I would like to thank you for your prayers and support over the past couple months as we make a fresh start. Lots has happened since our March 8th meeting. The board has met 3 times and many exciting things are happening. Most of our discussions have turned into actions. New board members have joined, Kristin Peereboom who was previously on the Board is back heading the Development program again. Helen Van Daleen is the Treasurer, and we have had many people approach the Board showing interest to be involved with ACCS. There is a sense of renewed excitement and energy that you can feel as you walk into the school. The Board has also been in contact with OACS and met with them this past Friday. OACS will be joining us at our April 13th board meeting. The school finances look very good. We continue to receive donations, and the “Attic” is having a good year. As the Board looks ahead to 2016-2017 enrollment, I can’t stress enough the importance of letting us know if you are registering again. This will enable the Board to put together a proper budget along with staffing and setting up the tuition structure. The Board is looking at a variety of ways to continue to reduce expenses. The school mortgage is up for renewal. This presents a unique opportunity to be creative in reducing this debt. We all want to let the community know that we have something VERY special here at ACCS, from amazing loving teachers to small class sizes. Not only do we have an incredible facility we have a property that you just don’t find at other schools. The best way to promote this school is by word of mouth but sometimes we can be our worst enemy. We have something incredible that God has blessed us with for 35 years, is that not something we should be telling other people about? Let every discussion about ACCS be a positive one and I guarantee it will change the way the community sees our school, which in turn can only mean great things to come! I am very proud to say that my kids have attended ACCS and have matured and grown up into incredible young women who love the Lord and want to bless Him. Their years at ACCS have played a very big role in who they are today. The Board looks forwards to working alongside our families and the community to provide the best we can in higher education, biblically infused learning and of course providing an atmosphere for creative and safe learning.
