Sanjay is absorbed in the world of cartoons and comics, while his father tries to draw him into the traditions of his Hindu practice. Tedium and reluctance quickly turn into an awe-inspiring adventure as the boy embarks on a journey he never imagined, returning with a new perspective that they can both embrace. Director’s Biography: Sanjay Patel joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1996 as an animator on “A Bug’s Life.” Since then he has animated on many of Pixar’s feature films, including “Toy Story 2,” “Monster’s Inc.,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Cars,” Toy Story 3” and “Monsters University.” In addition to animating, Patel also storyboarded extensively for “Monster’s Inc.,” “The Incredibles” and “Toy Story 2.” For the carstoons “Mater’s Tall Tales,” Patel stepped up to act as the Animation Supervisor on many of the shorts in the series. Most recently, Patel made his directing debut with Pixar’s short film “Sanjay’s Super Team,” which screened in front of the feature “The Good Dinosaur.” Growing up in San Bernardino, CA, in a Gujarati family, Patel’s earliest artistic influences stemmed from two very different worlds: comic books and Saturday morning cartoons, and the Hindu gods and spiritual culture that came to define his upbringing. After pursuing his artistic interests at the Cleveland Institute for the Arts, Cal-Arts, and Pixar, Patel eventually turned his attention back to his roots, and began creating art, graphic novels and picture books that re-envisioned Hindu mythology in a modern, pop-culture way. “Sanjay’s Super Team” is Patel’s personal story and a “mostly true” chronicle of his journey to understand the Hindu world so important to his parents. This film is a portrait of a man at the nexus of the most pressing social issues of our day; veterans’ care, mental health access and criminal justice. Director’s Biography: First time filmmakers Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman have been working together since 2004, collaborating on art, film and interactive projects that look at the ways power structures and politics impact everyday lives. Dee is originally from the U.K., and is an Associate Professor of Art & Digital Art New Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Nomi was born in Israel and is a freelance editor and animator. This award-winning artist team works on film, video, new media and art installations that explore trauma, justice and memory. Their work looks at the ways individuals cope when faced with social and political forces they cannot control. They are interested in definitions of truth, forged through the act of remembering as well as the ways power structures impact individual lives, how reactions formulate and create a sense of external and internal reality. Their work incorporates animation, installation, public art, documentary film, fusing drawing practices and aesthetics with new technologies and contemporary interpretations. They seek to address critical social issues through collaborative projects that question the false divisions between public and private spheres, personal memory, politics and democracy. Dee and Nomi have been awarded grants from, among others, the Creative Work Fund (2009), the National Endowment for the Arts (project grant 2009), the San Francisco Arts Commission (2010), the Center for Cultural Innovation (2011, 2014), the European Cultural Council (2012) and California Humanities (2015, 2013) as well as fellowships from MacDowell Artists’ Colony (2011), Bay Area Video Coalition Media Maker Fellowship (2012) and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (2014). They were jointly awarded the Film Maker Award by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University (2015) created to honor and support documentary filmmakers who connect to the power of the documentary tradition and whose works are potential catalysts for education and change. They are currently 2016 Fellows at the Doc Lab Institute at Duke University.
